We had a long, enjoyable run, and I would like to thank every Orlando Magic fan who contributed to our small community on the web. This message board will be left online as an archive into the thoughts and minds of a group of Magic fanatics who lived through a 21-win season, the drafting of Dwight Howard, and an eventual NBA Finals appearance. Gortat has a 'good chance' to make the team; good news!

A good performance this week at the Pepsi Summer League should at least earn him a contract and an invitation to training camp.
"You could do a lot worse than Marcin Gortat," Magic General Manager Otis Smith said. "He's a talented big, agile and athletic. And he can rebound. He has a good chance.''
"I'm more experienced now. I didn't have that when I was drafted. I didn't have much of a game then. I was mostly potential,'' Gortat said. "Now I'm ready to play in this league. That's what I'm here for.''
Gortat had a game-high 12 rebounds and 10 points [in the Magic's first summer league game].
He didn't waste any time showing some of his skills. On the Magic's first offensive possession, he hustled around his defender to grab an offensive rebound, then got a quick assist for the first Magic score.
A few minutes later he outran the opposing center -- and almost everyone else on the floor -- for a fast-break layup and 3-point play.
There still isn't much polish to his game offensively, and he still needs more muscle, but his talents are obvious. He moves more quickly than most centers in the NBA.
"I can bring my energy, and I can do that well. My hustle is how I scored most of my points in Europe,'' he said. "I've got a lot to learn, but I'm excited to learn it.''
They look even thinner now that Milicic has become an unrestricted free agent, unlikely to return. "Last year, it was hard, painful, a little weird for a guy playing well -- at least thinking he played well -- then be told he wasn't ready,'' Gortat said. "But I've learned from that experience. I've prepared myself differently, and I hope to stay this time.''
Unlike Fran Vazquez, the Magic's first-round draft pick from 2005, Gortat's contract in Europe for next season has an easy-out clause that releases him if he can land a spot in the NBA.

I bet if Otis can't bring in any other bigs Gortat gets extended minutes. Don't get me wrong, I like what I see from Gortat, but inexperience can be brutal in the NBA.

I like Gortat, but would feel a lot more comfortable if we still brought it at least one veteran big man. We are woefully weak at the big man spots and could use the depth.

Inexperience? Hes played in Europe for the past few years. He has more experience than the college players from America.

Well, looks like unless something comes out of left field Gortat has made the roster with Darko leaving.
I am not upset about Darko leaving and am interested to see more of Gortat, but I just pray we get another big man somehow. We have no fallback if Battie or Darko are out any given night.

Well, if we still do a sign and trade, we'll have money to sign someone.
I'm still not pessimistic.

Not being pessimistic, unfortunately. In the Sentinel article it says that we are expected to sign Rashard outright Wednesday, ending the sign and trade talk and our free agency (unless we can make a trade).
Hopefully we still manage a sign and trade, but right now it isn't looking good according to the Sentinel's implications for tomorrow.

What can I say? The most important thing is that we won the game. From the first moment when everyone on the team came together, we said we wanted to win the Summer League. I think there was a couple good parts of the game today. I think we still have to work on our defensive rotation.
About myself, I was happy I could help the team on the boards. I hope I put a lot of energy in the game. But there a still a couple of issues. Coach said he still wasn't satisfied with a couple of things. I'm going to still try and do better and I hope next game we also win.
This is my first time playing in the game with J.J. (Redick). J.J. is way different than playing last year with Travis Diener. J.J. is the guy who has to finish the play, while Travis is the guy that's creating the opportunities for the guys. J.J.'s main strength is to score and I think he definitely did his job. He's just great. I think he scored 30 points and that's important. He has to score, I have to get rebounds and obviously a lot of people have to help.
