Magic could open talks with Cabezas

Cindy Garcia-Bennett Special to PA SportsTicker

MADRID (Ticker) - The Orlando Magic would like to sign Unicaja Malaga playmaker Carlos Cabezas, the player's agent has confirmed.

The Malaga-born Cabezas, 26, has always played for the club that he helped capture a Spanish ACB title seasons ago.

"It's true that the Orlando Magic are interested in Carlos Cabezas," Cabezas' agent Gorka Arrinda said to PA SportsTicker. We are right now looking at numbers to see if that move is feasible before we sit down and begin negotiations. Like many Spain internationals, Cabezas has a big buy-out clause. In his case, it is 1.7 million euros (2,316,000 US dollars)."

Cabezas, who along with Jorge Garbajosa and Walter Herrmann won that ACB title in 2006, has seen his stock rise ever since.

He made Spain's squad for the FIBA World Championship in Japan and was instrumental in the team winning the gold medal.

Garbajosa signed with the Toronto Raptors last summer while Herrmann joined the Charlotte Bobcats.

This year, after leading Unicaja to the Euroleague Final Four in Athens for the first time in team history, he suffered an eye injury on a drive to the basket in their semi-final against CSKA Moscow and needed an operation.

Doctors were worried about possible lasting damage to a tear duct, but he returned after missing several games and has fully recovered.

"Orlando are the only NBA team to have shown an interest in Cabezas," Arrinda said. "We have not received an official offer yet from them, but they are hoping that the player will join them this coming season."

The Magic have been interested in Spanish players before.

They drafted Fran Vazquez of Spain 11th overall in the 2005 draft but the big center shocked the team by choosing to remain in Spain.

Cabezas is in Pepu Hernandez's team for the EuroBasket which Spain will host later this year.

They're calling him a playmaker....maybe like a Ginobili clone? Perhaps this guy might be the answer to replacing Grant Hill....I want him signed, only so I can call him "Loco en las" Cabezas! :)

Ok so hes a 6 foot 1 PG. He has alot of experience and could make an impact right away.

EDIT: But from everything i have seen on the 'net, it seems like he is not a big scorer by any means.

Not too jump to conclusions, but I would have to believe that if we are going after a point guard, then the sign and trade with Seattle must be more of a sure bet. With 3 and a half point guards on our team right now, we definetly wouldn't need another unless Arroyo and Dooling are on their way out of town.

I know absolutely nothing about this guy, but I wouldn't be opposed to him coming over.

I must admit, he doesn't quite look like your typical NBA point guard.

I don't know any Spanish, but from what I can make out, he played 19 minutes a game, scored 7.9 pts, and averaged 1.8 assists. He shot 48% from behind the arc, but only attempted 2 a game.

Stats

If one of you Spanish speaking guys could double check and make sure I'm looking at the right things, I'd much appreciate it.

Yeah, but isn't the game played a bit differently overseas? Usually the hot prospects don't have staggering numbers.

Seems like some cheap depth to our roster. He is a short guy, but has a good pedigree in Europe as a playmaker. I love Doogie, but with the team seeming to fall out of love with him I say we give Cabeza a shot.

Yeah, i have learned from many times thinking that European stats mean much. They dont. The game is totally different and its more of a team game than over here where teams are focused on one main player. Dont focus on his stats much, look more at the way he plays the game and his potential. Not that i know much about this guy either way but im just saying.

Drafting Marbury + Foyle = Championship. \o/
I've seen some games of Unicaja and Carlos is a solid guy... but nothing more IMO. He's a good defender for sure (almost every european PG is), but not a scorer (he even kind of struggles from the FT line...) and I don't even consider him a superb passer.

I'm not sure he could really be a solid guy in the NBA right now :\

I've watched some games from Cabezas and he's more a defensive PG. He isnt a great shooter neither a great passer. He'll bring some depth to our roster, and this sign means that Diener or Carlos or both arent in our plans...

Hard to say now with Darko out of the picture...maybe the possible S&T will free up space to get Chucky Atkins....we'll see.
