here's what I think is going on here....

Get a scorer. If you believe in verbal agreements, Otis has accomplished that goal by coming to terms with Rashard Lewis.

Now, I think that Otis would have liked to get a deal done for Darko Milicic first. However, because Lewis was drawing high interest in other NBA locales, it looks to me as if the GM's hand was forced. He had to act quickly if he wanted Rashard's services. He did just that.

So, Otis gets the crown jewel. But now, things get really jumbled in terms of salary cap in trying to get Darko Milicic signed.

Some of you bloggers are likely much better capologists than I. My eyes tend to gloss over whenever I hear the phrase "base year compensation". But, despite the inflammatory comments of Marc Cornstein recently, I truly believe Otis wants to re-sign Darko.

After Lewis and the Magic agreed on a deal, Otis had to act quickly because they didn't want Darko suddenly accepting their qualifying offer. If that had happened, the Lewis agreement would have gone the way of Billy Donovan.

So then, much to Marc Cornstein's chagrin, the Magic were forced to pull Darko's qualifying offer and renounce his rights, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Here's what I believe the plan is:

Acquire Rashard Lewis in a sign and trade with Seattle. In return, the Magic would send a few players with expiring contracts (possibly Garrity and Arroyo and maybe Dooling) to the Sonics. In such a deal, we could get back roughly $8 million in cap to sign Darko. However, this plan hinges on Seattle doing a sign and trade. If the Sonics decide against making such a deal, then a Darko deal is D-O-A in Orlando and he'll have to go elsewhere.

No doubt. Shard probably had Orlando as his top priority, but that didn't mean he felt like he HAD to come here. Let's face facts: The deal had to be made right away to get him on board, and that meant doing this "creative financing" Otis had talked about....which meant taking a gamble on Darko.

Well Otis' days to get a S+T done are probably numbered. Teams will be out trying to get Darko so Otis better work fast if he wants to keep Lewis AND Darko.

Only a few teams can offer Darko what he wants, so he may be playing for less if he wants to go to better teams.

And you can cross Darko off that list now because they've agreed to terms with Nocioni... his list of possible suitors keeps getting shorter and shorter.

Yep, just saw the Bulls resigned him to a 5 year deal.

I really hope we don't trade Dooling. He resigned here in good faith and I think he can really help our team with SVG at the helm. And I highly doubt they will trade Arroyo because I think we need to see him AND Nelson with an offensively competent head coach.

I wish we could keep Darko, but I don't know if it's worth trading Dooling and Arroyo. However, I don't think it will matter anyways. We basically traded Darko for Lewis and I don't think there's a Magic fan that wouldn't have made that deal if given the choice.

Apparently Darko is still telling teams he wants something in the 9-10 million range. Obviously his agent is insane.

Even if we wanted to offer him the MLE... we don't have one because we just renounced it to sign the biggest star of the basketball world. All we have is the allmighty 1 million dollar (+/-) vet minimum to get another FA this summer.

I mean, a 120 millions guy over 6 years must be the best player of the league, right?

Yeah, we only get the MLE if we're over the cap. Well, we are now, but we can't use it until next season. Right?

It's going to be hard to improve this team with the Jason Kaponos and Derek Fishers of the NBA. :/

Free-agent center Darko Milicic agreed in principle to a three-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, the player's agent Marc Cornstein told ESPN.com Insider Chad Ford.

Cornstein refused to disclose the amount of the deal, but the starting salary is believed to be for substantially more than the $5.3 million mid-level exception.

"We are extremely excited for this new opportunity," Cornstein said. "Darko's going to a team that really wants him. He's going to a young team with an exciting bright future much like his own. We're very excited Darko gets to learn from coach Marc Iavaroni. We believe he's one of the best big men coaches in the game. And we couldn't be happier that he has found a new home where he's appreciated."

So I guess this sort of make it official. Darko is getting a short-term MLE deal.
