According to this article, Lewis will sign with us on July 11. Even though I feel that we are going to overpay him, it seems like you have to start overpaying for players in order to get them in free agency.

I wonder how reliable this info is. There is no way of getting Lewis lower than 15M anyway.

It also says that the Magic will allow Milicic to become an unrestricted free agent. I don't know why we would do this.

Jameer and Dwight providing an asist
ORLANDO — Dwight Howard has every intention of being a member of the Orlando Magic for the long term, and he hopes that free-agent forward Rashard Lewis is right there playing alongside him.
Howard reaffirmed Monday that he will be signing a five-year, $80 million contract extension — the longest allowed by the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement — in the coming weeks. Now he's hoping the Magic can close the deal on landing Lewis, the former all-star who is in Orlando to meet with Magic officials.

The Magic used Howard and point guard Jameer Nelson to recruit Lewis Monday afternoon. Lewis planned to remain in Orlando on Monday night and will likely return to his home in Houston on Tuesday.

"Having a guy like Rashard around would help my game out tremendously," Howard said. "The more shooters that we can bring in here, the better. Rashard is a shooter and a scorer, and that would help our team so much. We have some young guys on this team who can play, and hopefully we can add somebody like Rashard."

Lewis, the 6-foot-10 small forward who averaged career bests in points (22.4), rebounds (6.6) and assists (2.4) last season for Seattle, traveled from his hometown of Houston on Sunday to Orlando for a meeting with Magic general manager Otis Smith and assistant general manager Dave Twardzik.

The Magic let Lewis know how interested they were in him by contacting his camp just after midnight early Sunday, the first day negotiations are allowed between teams and free agents.

Players can't officially sign deals with teams until July 11. Often, deals get agreed upon well before then, and Lewis' could happen within a matter of days. But because Lewis, 27, is seeking a six-year deal worth at least $75 million, the Magic must negotiate a sign-and-trade deal with the SuperSonics. That could extend the process.

I updated my blog with this news. Since I can't find it anywhere else, I'm taking this information with a shaker full of salt. Still, wow. 'Shard in Orlando.

Uh, yeah, anyway, if this news is true, Otis is a freakin' liar. That's all I have to say about that.

I'll miss Darko.

I'll miss Darko too But Great Going Otis if you grt Lewis!!! But Orlando hasn't said yet if it was worth it losing a 1st round draft pick from 2006 to 2007 for Arroyo & Milicic.Just to let Darko slip away!!!

Wow, the Darko news is incredibly surprising, but I am about the big picture here and I am ECSTATIC if it is confirmed we got Shard. Darko we can replace with Gortat or another free agent.

Sonics hopefully will agree to a sign and trade to get something out of nothing in this deal. If the salaries are true then we can just grab him outright.

There could be a Darko for Rashard trade in the work. Seattle needs a center and the Magic needs a scorer..

There's nothing to be found about the Lewis signing on WKMG's website. Maybe the report is false?

ESPN news

The NBA's most sought-after free agent is going to the Magic Kingdom.

Rashard Lewis has given the Orlando Magic a verbal commitment to leave the Seattle SuperSonics and sign a max contract on July 11, according to NBA front-office sources.

That's the first day free agents are allowed to officially sign new contracts.

Unless a sign-and-trade arrangement is worked out with Lewis' old team or unless it can otherwise shed payroll between now and July 11, Orlando will have to renounce the rights to restricted free agent Darko Milicic to create the salary-cap space needed to sign Lewis to a deal believed to be in the $15 million-a-year range.

It's on ESPN now, so there maybe some truth into it.

This will most probably be a sign-and-trade, so who are we giving up to get Lewis?

Thanks Dwight and Jameer

Dwight Howard's enthusiasm on Monday reflected the Orlando Magic's feeling about how their visit with Rashard Lewis is going.

Lewis, the free agent whom the Magic covet, has been in town since Sunday talking with the club about a contract and getting acquainted with management and some players.

Early this morning, espn.com, quoting NBA front-office sources, reported that Lewis had verbally committed to signing a maximum contract with the Magic on July 11, the first day allowable under NBA rules.

"I'm very excited we'd have a chance to play together. He's a wonderful athlete, great person and would help our team a lot," Howard said Monday.

Howard said he already feels a "chemistry" with Lewis, forged through competition and Lewis encouraging him on his "gooseneck" free-throw-shooting form.

"We'd joke a lot during some of the games," said Howard, after completing a community-service project for the Pine Hills Boys and Girls Club. "Actually one of the things I remember is that when we played them, he'd tell me to get my gooseneck going, so I was hearing it from another player. So we sort of got a little chemistry going.

"Hopefully, he'll like it here."

Howard said that he and teammate Jameer Nelson had planned to take Lewis out on the town Monday night.
