Grant Hill optimistic about future

BY JOHN DENTON
FLORIDA TODAY

NEW YORK - Grant Hill, who was in New York Thursday for an NBA symposium for players about to be drafted, sounded optimistic about his chances of returning to the Orlando Magic.

Hill is about to become an unrestricted free agent and he will be free to negotiate with other NBA teams on July 1. Hill just concluded the seven-year, $92.88 million deal he signed with the Magic in 2000. Much of that time was marred by ankle and abdomen injuries, but Hill did make it through this past season healthy.

Hill said he's had extensive talks with new Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, and those meetings have helped enhance his desire to return to Orlando. Playing time and role on the team are extremely important to Hill, 34, who still thinks he can be a major contributor.

"(Van Gundy) feels the same way about me as I do, and that's a very good thing," Hill said with a big smile. "He still thinks I can play, and so do I."

Hill's never been on a team that's won a playoff series in his NBA career, and the allure of going deep in the postseason is appealing to him. That's one reason he will listen to pitches from San Antonio, Phoenix, Detroit and Miami on July 1. He started his NBA career with the Pistons, and his wife, Tamia, is from nearby Windsor, Ontario.

Hill said unlike in 2000, he won't be visiting any teams during the free-agent courting process.

"They all have nice practice facilities, but I don't have to see them," he said. "I'll be doing it all with conference calls."

San Antonio might be extremely appealing to Hill because he could still be a starter at small forward there. The Spurs like to use Manu Ginobili off the bench and Michael Finley is in the final stages of his career.

Phoenix also could be appealing, especially if it trades current starting small forward Shawn Marion in a deal for Kevin Garnett.

Hill said, regardless of what happens, he plans to keep his home in suburban Orlando.

I really hope he comes back. If not then we better get Lewis or another good SF from free agency.
