Magic Draft Picks?

I'm ambivalent on the thought of moving up to get a UF player. I'm not a fan of the college game, so all I know about UF's draft entrants is that Noah has poofy hair and likes to pound his chest a lot.

If we do move up, regardless of who we take with the pick, I'd hate to lose Dooling. The Magic Insider wrote that he and Arroyo are the two players most likely to be shipped out for a draft pick. I'd hate to lose Keyon. He's one of my favorite players. :/

Noah is pretty overrated, and he doesn't really have what I'd call an "NBA ready" frame for a body. He dominated college kids but he'll be running into walls in the NBA. Al Horford and Corey Brewer are most likely both to be pretty nasty, I think they'll translate very well in the NBA.

From Michael (5/24): Are the Magic looking to trade into the lottery this year? It seems a lot of teams outside of Portalnd and Seattle are looking to trade and there are a lot of players getting overlooked because of the recognition of Oden and Durant which the Magic can capitalize on.

Otis: Michael, It is something we'll have to consider, especially if there's a player up there that we really like. With that said, we would target guys as the Draft unfolds. But it would have to be the right guy - a real difference maker. Keep in mind that trading into the first round would eat into cap space. That would affect what we could do in free agency. So it would have to be the right guy. But we will continue to look at everything to get our team better. Thanks for your question.

Now that weirdo Donovan booked who knows if we'll trade into the 1st round. It seemed like that phony really wanted to do it, but who knows now. I don't feel like giving up a ton for a 1st rounder and then losing a ton of cap space. I like our current core of guys fine right now.

Big statement from Otis. Sounds like we are going to have to weigh our free agency and our draft against each other when it comes to money.

What would you guys rather take...

Reel in big fish via FA, or the draft?

Great question man.

For me without a doubt a big fish in FA. I think we have enough youth and could use some veteran leadership.

Free agent, by a mile. Considering the state of this franchise, I don't think we can take a chance on a hit-or-miss first round pick. Outside of Durant and Oden, there are no sure-fire picks in this draft. If we trade up and draft a flop, it would be horrible.

By signing a semi-veteran free agent, we know what we are getting. We are not too far from being a contending team (despite screwing a lot of stuff up lately), and I'd rather go after the sure-bet addition to this team.

Agreed. We have a bunch of young talent, I don't think adding more would be the greatest idea. It would take a while for everyone to mesh together flawlessly. Adding a mixture of veteran, proven talent + young emerging talent = the key to success in the NBA. Or any sport, in that matter.

Stockpiling young talent rarely works. Just look at last year's Celtics. Half that team is still college-aged.

The free agent should be our second priority, after re-signing Darko.

Kind of like the Hawks as well.

The Hawks draft poorly as well. Their backcourt could be Chris Paul and Brandon Roy. Instead, it's Tyronn Lue and Joe Johnson. Okay, Johnson's an All-Star, but can you imagine him playing alongside Paul with Roy coming in off the bench? And Josh Smith blocking shots and dunking from everywhere? That team would be unreal.

Talking about Joe Johnson. I wonder if the Magic have thought about trading for him. He would be much happier here than in Atlanta, I think.

I'd love to get Joe Johnson. Just a great player, but I don't know, he just went to the Hawks not too long ago. They do have a decent amount of young talent, but I certainly wouldn't mind getting him. I doubt he would be on Otis' radar though. Who knows.

Definitely a FA. People are saying that Durant hasn't proven anything in his workouts. Also, Oden hasn't proven he's a solid player to bang with the big people. It's better to get a proven veteran that can help this team immediately.
