Seems like Darko is gone

Meanwhile, Magic power forward Darko Milicic's agent said Monday afternoon that the club had yet to make contact. Milicic is a restricted free agent, meaning Orlando can match any offer as long as he remains so.

The Magic have told Milicic to bring back an offer.

"We have lots of options," said Marc Cornstein, Milicic's agent.

Cornstein said he has heard from "25 teams" since the green flag dropped on the free-agent courting period Sunday.

"There's a lot of interest," he said. "We've had some real offers to sign-and-trade deals. . . everything across the board."

Cornstein seemingly wondered if the Magic were truly committed to re-signing Milicic, a 7-foot power forward.

"We want Darko to go to a team that believes in him and makes him a focal point," he said. "If it's Orlando, great. If it's one of the other 29 teams, then that's fantastic, too."

I still think there is a shot. We appear to have checked on Shard before Darko, but I think we will free up more money for him or at least more pieces.

I think I may be asking the same question as ec, but can anyone give a ballpark figure on the amount of cap space we should have left after losing Darko and signing Lewis?

I couldnt find what you were asking about Falcon, but i did find this:

Milicic might now have to sign a one- or two-year deal at the mid-level exception ($5.5 million) and re-enter the free-agent market again next summer. Or he could get his lucrative contract this summer if the Magic will sign-and-trade him to another team.

To retain Milicic, the Magic would have to create more room under the salary cap. To do that, Orlando could try to deal Hedo Turkoglu ($6.3 million) or Tony Battie ($5.2 million). By dealing one of those players to a team already under the salary cap, the Magic wouldn’t have to take back any salaries.

Another option would be for the Magic to peddle the expiring contracts of Arroyo ($4 million), Pat Garrity ($3.8 million) and Keyon Dooling ($3.5 million), possibly to Seattle in the sign-and-trade deal for Lewis. The Sonics are eager to unload the contracts of Luke Ridnour ($19.5 million over the next three years) and/or Earl Watson ($18.6 million over the next three years).

dwight howard has got to take his game to the next level this season, i really think this is an important year for him and he has to take that next step, i see idiots on ESPN bashing dwight now saying that he has a poor offensive game, he doesnt play good defense and that he doesnt bring it every night and as much as i think their stupid they are right about that dwight sometimes takes nights off and when he starts a game off bad he gets frustrated and lets it take over him, and he does have a limited offensive skillset for 3 yrs in this league

dwight really needs to step it up big time, ewing needs to light a fire under his a** this season and get him going

He's improved each season, don't listen to those idiots. How many nights did he explode with 20+ points and a ton of rebounds? What other player out of of HS not named LeBron James has dominated like Dwight Howard? He's going to be fine, I'm sure of it.

People are just itching to criticize since Orlando's made the biggest offseason move. It's funny how some people want to rip Shard for wanting to go to Orlando, saying it's not an ideal situation. Come on, this team was a playoff team last year, and in the East, any hot team can make it to the Finals!

Watching Dwight, his offensive strengths were usually following up on rebounds and in transition. In the set offense, he often got double-teamed unless Turk was going off. Truthfully, he only needs to improve on his free-throws and get a better eye on the defensive sets (those turnovers were brutal down the stretch, but he's still a KID!) The offense WILL run through him more this season since opponents will have to keep a close eye on Shard....that dude can explode. If Jameer can get a better handle on his shot selection and just be a more consistent playmaker, things could be tremendous. The Magic peaked waaaaay too early last season. If they can pace themselves, things could be lots of fun on Orlando.

Really Dwight needs improvment on offence, other then his dunks or a little baby hock shot he doesn't have much else. He is still needs improvement during double teams, Free throws, and cutting down on his TO's. Dwight really has alot to improve on before really becoming great.

And it is put up or shut up time for Nelson, in this time in his career he needs to become a better passer and consistent player if not he needs to go.

Like iceveins333 said everything depends on Howard, if he becomes a superstar next offseason he will make that lewis signing look good but if he is still 3 years away from that superstar level that lewis deal will look bad.

Dwight has never had a consistent scorer beside him. Shard's averaged over 20 a game the past three seasons. Having a proven scorer next to him (and a 6'10" scorer at that) WILL free up Dwight in the paint for easy one-on-one opportunities. The real question is whether or not he'll be able to take advantage of this situations and keep a limit on turnovers. If he starts strong, then he'll be given the hack-a-Shaq treatment, and then the free-throw situation comes to the surface. Dwight's D is adequate, and he's always been a tremendous rebounder. Dwight hasn't reached greatness yet....turnovers and horrid free-throw percentage have neutralized that. Once he takes care of that, he'll be fine. He's more of a David Robinson type than a Patrick Ewing...he uses inside strength, not a midrange jumper.

You're also right about Jameer. I think the situation is ideal for him, also because of having a consistent scorer. Jameer will be able to use that to become a better playmaker. If he can't, then he's pretty well done here in Orlando.

I agree. The turnovers and double-team issues or more of a singular issue. I would be willing to bet that 90% of Dwight's turnovers last year were a result of double teams. If he can figure it out, he'll be much, much better off.

As far as the point guards go, and I've been saying this since Brian Hill came in, they have been in the worst situation imaginable for the last few years. They were charged with running an offense that was designed to be slow (thanks Brian Hill!), had no consistent scorer, no outside shooting, and revolved around force-feeding a big man who can't handle double teams. It doesn't get any worse than that. Hopefully, with Van Gundy and Lewis in town, those issues will begin to resolve themselves.

I think Nelson and Arroyo are capable point guards, and I think both will be best served by playing at a quicker tempo and having a good scorer to rely on when offense is harder to come by.

As one of the sentinel writers put it, the best thing the Magic can do next year is "remove the shackles from Jameer Nelson and Carlos Arroyo."

Yeah, a new regime might just be the fresh breath of air these players need. I just bought a Jameer jersey (for 19.99!) and I expect to wear it proudly for some time!!!

If the worst happens, I can always say, "Hey, I got it cheap!"

from the Sentinel:

Orlando likely will have only the veteran exceptions ($1.2 million) to offer free agents, perhaps banking on players to take less for the chance to play with Lewis and Howard. The Magic might simply have to wait to see which players are left looking for work.

Devean George and Chucky Atkins (former Magic player) are two free-agent guards who still could be available.

I wouldnt mind Devean George coming off the bench. I always liked him when he was with Los Angeles. Didnt see him much with Dallas last season though.

That's probably for the best. He shot .395 last season. He's not an exceptionally good rebounder. He defends okay, but the offensive liability makes him not worth pursuing IMO. We already have one Keith Bogans. :/
