We had a long, enjoyable run, and I would like to thank every Orlando Magic fan who contributed to our small community on the web. This message board will be left online as an archive into the thoughts and minds of a group of Magic fanatics who lived through a 21-win season, the drafting of Dwight Howard, and an eventual NBA Finals appearance. The Magic definately need to retire those jerseys & as for Howard VS Lewis I agreee that Otis is more likely to throw Money @ Players he knows but the point is too get Dwight some help that can shoot & play "D" so wind up signing them both Lewis Now & next summer Dwight

I disagree with the notion of retiring any of our former players jerseys at this time. While we've had a couple of local stars in the past, none of the ones mentioned have been all-stars, great players, or even members of a championship team. I know a lot of fans want to see a jersey retired, but I believe we should save that honor for those who truly deserve it. I think the Magic have the right idea at the moment of honoring former players but not actually retiring their jerseys.

Here is something I posted awhile back in an old thread:

While some Magic fans will say yes, I do not think Anderson deserves to have his jersey retired. While he was our first draft choice ever (not No. 1, but first draftee ever taken), and while he has had the longest career here, Anderson was never an all-star, never on a championship team, and never won an NBA season award. I believe the retiring of a jersey should be reserved for hall of fame OR near-hall of fame players, but not for a player who, while might be locally famous, never really had a superb, superstar-type career. When you retire a player's number, it means no one can ever wear it again. I just don't believe Anderson was so much of an impact on our franchise that it should warrant the retiring of his jersey. I would have to say the same thing for Darrell Armstrong, who never had an all-star type career either. I'd save the retiring of a jersey for players such as O'Neal or McGrady (assuming they had played here longer than they did).

On another note, here's what I think the Magic should do. Create a "Magic Hall of Fame" where players who made significant contributions to the franchise could be honored. Dedicate a spot in the arena for this hall of fame, maybe where every hall of fame member's names are on a wall or something like that. Then players like Nick Anderson, Darrell Armstrong, Scott Skiles, etc. could be remembered and honored for their place in Magic-lore without having to retire their jerseys.

-------------------------------------

(The Magic have now done something similiar to what I suggested in the last paragraph.)

I just think it's disrespectful to keep those numbers in circulation. If you aren't going to retire them officially, fine. But don't let other people have them immediately. The New York Yankees, for instance, did not issue Bernie Williams' #51 at spring training this year. They did the same thing with Paul O'Neill's number, which I believe was 21.

I see what you're saying MagicMadness. They might have been good to the Magic, but they really haven't done much else in the NBA though. We will probably retire Dwight's # if he hopefully stays long enough.

Not necessarily. We better win a championship first before you start talking about retiring Dwights jersey. The jerseys are not retired just because the fans like a guy like MM said. You gotta win alot of accolades and take your team to the championship. Thats a tall order to fill.

Yeah but if the guys can and will constantly be an All-Star and also win some awards just like the All-NBA Third Team, that's a step.

Yeah its a step but retiring a jersey is for players on a championship team. Thats why the Celtics have 21 numbers retired.

Sadly, I think the only player we've had that has performed at a level to deserve a jersey is Shaq, and no way we give him one for leaving us in the dust.

Mayyyyyybe if he works for our franchise for a while after he retires. We know he loves Orlando.

SA: Once the draft is over with, the free agency period begins. What are you going to be doing July 1?

OS: We're probably gonna bring in one or two guys. We like a couple of guys a lot. For us to make an impact in free agency, we're gonna have to do some creative financing. We have cap room, but it's not a ton of cap room. Some of that has to do with a Darko deal and how he ties it up. It's what we are talking about for 4-5 hours a day right now. I am not sure if we are spending 90% of the time on draft or 90% of our time on free agency, but both of them are consuming us right now.

SA: What's your criteria for the pool of free agents you are interested in?

OS: He's gonna have to make an impact today! That's what you are in the free agent market for. You are not in the free agent market for a guy who's gonna develop in 2-3 years. He's gonna have to have an impact today. Also you have to look at other factors. How's he gonna help our young team grow? Having Dwight, Jameer, JJ and Darko, that becomes important. What kind of character guy is he? And you have to take into consideration how the coach likes to play. We look at a lot of things but mainly what will his impact be on our young basketball team.

The last part in Otis' second answer leads me to believe that they've completely ruled Vince Carter out at this point.

Allen could go in Sonic broom

Drafting Kevin Durant at No. 2 is the easy part for new Sonics GM Sam Presti. The hard part is figuring out what to do with Ray Allen, who could be on the move if Presti decides to completely rebuild. The Sonics turned down Toronto's offer of the No. 1 pick last June for Allen, but Chicago and Cleveland are just two of the teams expected to try to get Allen if he's put on the block. Toronto doesn't have the cap space to land Allen. Several GMs expect Seattle's free-agent-to-be, Rashard Lewis, to leave, with Orlando as his prime destination, with Carter likely re-signing in New Jersey. But Michael Jordan says the Bobcats are going to start spending big money on free agents and if owner Bob Johnson opens his vault for the first time, Lewis could wind up in Charlotte. Where have you heard this one before: Isiah Thomas doesn't have the pieces to land Lewis in a sign-and-trade.

Both 2007 Picks the Magic have in the Draft should go to the Detroit Piston & Miami Heat. For the Trade with Detroit Last Year for Milicic & Carrlos Arroyo. If not I will be very suprised.

Part of me is still very reluctant to chop up our team, because I attribute so much of our failure to Brian Hill. I'd like to keep the same core, minus Grant Hill and Pat Garrity, and plus Rashard Lewis and a veteran point guard.

I disagee with this statement some but agree elsewhere. I agree we should keep the Core.Howard,Milicic,Turk,Garrity,JJ.Get Rashard Lewis but play him as a SF.

From what ive been reading on the internet, it looks like we still have some question marks on our current roster to deal with.

1. Bo Outlaw is not signed for next season.
2. Travis Diener is not signed for next season.
3. We have a team option on James Augustine.
4. We know Grant Hill's future is obviously undecided.
5. We know Fran is obviously still a question mark.
6. Also Gortat is another question mark.

Yup, looks like Bo is an unrestricted free agent. I wonder if he's played his last game in the NBA.
