We had a long, enjoyable run, and I would like to thank every Orlando Magic fan who contributed to our small community on the web. This message board will be left online as an archive into the thoughts and minds of a group of Magic fanatics who lived through a 21-win season, the drafting of Dwight Howard, and an eventual NBA Finals appearance. Well... from my standpoint, thats not necessarily true. If you look at the Bulls and Suns, they dont have the height that we do, but more versatility. We have big guys and 7 footers because we need them. The Bulls and Suns dont because they play a totally different style of game play than the Magic do. We normally stick to the half court, post play... While the Suns and Bulls are more full court up and down action. In other words, I think we do need 7 footers and big men to be successful with our style of play.

If your going to focus your offense on a post player (Dwight) you need to protect him. And its not about Darko being 7', he could be 6'11 or 6'10, its about a big man with the potential to be a shot blocker/scorer/shooter/rebounder to play along side another shot blocker/scorer/rebounder/and hopefully one a day a shooter. Fact is, Darko may be more valuable to the Magic than to many other teams. Who are you going to replace him with? Outlaw is about at the end of the line, Battie isn't a spring chicken and seems to respond better to limited minutes. Dwight Howard without an inside presence that can take defenders away from the basket (and Darko can do that, his parameter shott will only get better) ends up playing in a sea of bodies under the basket and hs options become limited. The big man has been dead in the NBA for about a decade or two, but Howard/Oden/etc...may bring back the dominate big man PROVIDED teams place peices around them that allow them to be successful. Its not an accident that when the 3 point line which breeds parameter offenses came into being the dominate big man disappeared, partly beacause they did not fill a need, partly because teams no longer pounded the ball inside. Look at probably the dominate big man of the last five years, Ben Wallace...cannot score, he defends and rebounds, thats it...and gets outta the way on the offensive end. Darko is worth more becuase he is tall...with skills....and if I were some teams in the league I would think about taking a shot at him for big bucks. Kamen get 58 million over 6 years...do you think Darko has more upside than he does? I do. Brutal |

That's great and all, but all I'm saying is that we shouldn't overpay him. It can cost us a player down the road. Take the Bulls for example. I think the signing of Ben Wallace might cost them Ben Gordon or Luol Deng down the road. Unless the Bulls are willing to spend a lot of money and are willing to go way over the cap, I don't see Deng or Gordon being in a Bulls uniform their entire career. There's a chance that Darko might be better than the player that we can't resign in the future, but are we willing to take that chance based on "potential?" I just hope Darko gets a lot better in the next 2/3 of the season so he makes our decision to resign him much easier. |

There's no reason why we can't change our style of play if Darko leaves. It's not like our style is written in stone. I understand what you are saying, but it still doesn't warrant overpaying for a player based on "potential." |

Yeah, true. But that would be a little hard to change just because of Darko. It would be a huge offensive and defensive change that i dont think Coach Hill would make. It just doesnt make sense. But this is all speculation, so whatever. |

Exactly, we still have 2/3 of the season to see how Darko progresses. I'm just not a fan of giving a player whatever he wants without thinking about the long-term effects. Hopefully Darko improves drastically and we won't be having this conversation at the end of the season. |

I think the difference in these situations is that Ben Wallace is much older, and may prevent the Bulls from signing a long-term deal with one of their younger, core players. With us, I don't think that risk exists. I don't think there are any other big men in this league with the talent and potential (and age) that Darko has that we would be able to sign instead. Darko has many flaws, but he's also probably our best option at this point. I agree that it's best not to overpay, but when it comes down to overpaying vs. having a weaker frontcourt, I'll take overpaying.
As long as Dwight Howard is our best all-around player, I think we are pretty much locked into this half-court game. Our team would need a pretty large overhaul to get to the style of the Bulls or Suns.
I noticed. And thank you. This type of discussion is so much more enjoyable to read. |
