Will Magic Make A Trade?

The NBA trade deadline isn't until February, but the Allen Iverson deal sort of whets your appetite for what might be cooking in the hot stove league. And with most teams approaching the 30-game mark, they have an idea of what they have --- and what they need.

Will the Magic make a deal?

They'd like a first-round pick perhaps, considering the Pistons own their choice next June after surrendering it in the deal involving Darko Milicic and Carlos Arroyo.

It is top-5 lottery protected, which means the Magic would really be upset if this provision clicked in. It would mean they did not make the playoffs.

The Magic are stockpiled with wing players and have three point guards.

GM Otis Smith said Thursday that Travis Diener's name comes up more than anybody else's when teams call to talk trade.

Diener is the No. 3 point guard behind starter Jameer Nelson and backup Carlos Arroyo.

Has Diener improved enough that the club could get something in return --- a lower first-round pick, or say, a serviceable big man? Or would the Magic dare trade crowd fave Arroyo?

I doubt it.

But the Magic likely will not get a lot in return for Diener, so it might be better to hold onto him, even though he becomes a free agent after the season.

The Magic have a plethora of shooting guards (Grant Hill, Keyon Dooling, Keith Bogans and J.J. Redick). Might one go?

Smith already said that he was not going to trade Hill, who has an expiring contract, which leaves the other three. All depends on whether the Magic can get a power forward who can shoot or a power forward who can bang.

And what of Pat Garrity, a power forward whose three-point shooting acumen is collecting mothballs? Might be more of a market for Garrity if he could get hot.

Then again, if Pat could get on a roll, he'd become valuable to a team that is weak in three-point shooting.

The trade winds will blow more later next month. For now, it's just a little breeze in Orlando.

I think the only two people I can see leaving are Diener or Garrity. I would like someone to come in for Turkoglu, but our organization loves him. Overall, Im happy with our team now.
