DOLPHINS NEWS ALERT: Oh man...some more Dolphins news. -And this one's a doozy.

At this point, how can you NOT like Parcells if you're a Dolphins fan?

Quote:

Dolphins acquired TE Anthony Fasano and LB Akin Ayodele from the Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-round draft choice.

Fasano's first two years in Dallas were nondescript playing behind Jason Witten, but he's only 24 and has promising all-around ability. He should be given every opportunity to start over David Martin. Ayodele shores up the Dolphins' 3-4 at inside linebacker, competing with Channing Crowder and Reggie Torber for two starting positions. The deal is well worth the pick for Miami.

Dallas fans are wondering what the heck happened, this was such highway robbery for Miami. Fasano is young, popular, was fantastic when Witten was hurt, and was a former 2nd rounder. Ayodele was the Cowboys starting Inside Linebacker and is young and huge. We just got two great young starters for a 4th rounder!

Not sure if it's a prelude to more dealings on draft day between these two teams, but Miami stole these guys.

Woah awesome. How did we only give a 4th rounder for those two?!

Here is a little bit of an explanation for those Dallas fans:
Quote:

The move creates room for recently-signed linebacker Zach Thomas, and could create room for a potential rookie tight end in Dallas.

In acquiring the fourth-rounder, the Cowboys will have a pick in the round after dealing their selection to the Titans for Pacman Jones.

Fasano is a solid player, didn't get much of a chance in Dallas.

Draft Day!

Both the Magic playing and the Dolphins drafting? Great day to be a sports fan! :)

No one really knows what will happen, but here are my predictions on the day:
-------------------------
-Miami trades Jason Taylor for a late second rounder and a 5th rounder.
I'm going to guess they trade him to Washington.

-Miami selects Michigan QB Chad Henne with the 32nd overall pick. This is contingent on Joe Flacco and Quentin Groves being gone. I'd love the team to get Brian Brohm, but that is unlikely.

-Miami selects WR Jordy Nelson with their 2nd second rounder.

-Miami trades their 3rd rounder to acquire more picks in rounds 4 and 5.

-Miami uses day 2 to get a Guard, Cornerback, and Defensive End (if Groves is gone at 32).
------------------------

We'll see how it plays out!

I remember Akin Ayodele on the Jags. He was a solid player. I've seen Fasano play also. What a trade for Miami!! You guys are getting solid players and starting to turn the corner for the organization.

Sparano knew Fasano could play since he was with him in Dallas.

Dolphins Draft Day 1 Review
-----------------------
My picks: Not to toot my own horn, but I did a pretty darn good job with my Day 1 predictions. Not only did the Dolphins draft Chad Henne, which I totally called, but they went defensive end at pick 32. I said the organization would go Henne at 32, but not if DE Quentin Groves was available. -Well, Groves was...but so was Philip Merling, a better rated DE almost no one thought would last until that pick. Thus, the Dolphins picked a DE at 32 and Henne magically is still available with their pick much later. The Dolphins organization is amazed at their luck right now. I also said that the Phins would pick WR Jordy Nelson, but bumping all of my picks a pick later, I will say the Phins take WR Early Doucet at the beginning of day 2 and see how I do.

Now for my Day 1 grades:

1) Jake Long, LT: A-

I wrote extensively about this pick earlier in this thread. Solid, solid pick. I ONLY reason I give it a minus because we got stuck paying him a ton of money. This was the NFL system's fault more than anything. Parcells and company made this choice with confidence.

2) Phillip Merling, DE: B+

Merling was a possible top 10 pick in the draft until a sports hernia injury. Even after, many teams saw him going in the 15-20 range. The Dolphins were so sure he was going to be gone that most believed the team planned on taking the next best DE on their board after him, Quentin Groves. When Merling was somehow still available at 32, the Dolphins lept at the chance to get him. Parcells' agent is also Merling's, so he got the inside scoop on how huge a player he would be. I give the pick a B+ because while the player was a steal, he has to fully recover from his injury before I can be 100% pleased on the pick. For right now, it looks good. Real good.

3) Chad Henne, QB: A+

For months I've been hoping the Dolphins would get a QB in this draft to compete with John Beck. My reasoning was that the Dolphins have spent too many years hoping a player would work out and then getting stuck with their pants down when it didn't. With this choice the team just doubled its chances of finding its franchise QB. As for Henne himself, the team is so high on him that they have already stated that it's an open competition and Henne could possibly start this upcoming season if he wins the job. Toss in the fact that many of the GMs thought Henne could be the best QB in this draft over time, AND that the team somehow got him super late (pick 57), and you have yourselves a fantastic all around choice. I like this one even more than last year's John Beck pick because the team got such great value at the pick. Bonus Points: Henne is a gym nut and sorta looks like a bigger Ben Roethlisberger.

While last year was mired in controversy over the Phins passing on Brady Quinn, it was a pretty good year for the team in that it got a starting wide receiver, quarterback, center, and fullback. I gave that draft an A- and in retrospect it was pretty close to that grade. This year, I give the team a solid A. They got a starting left tackle, defensive end, and another potential franchise quarterback so far. That grade could go down or up, but that's where we're at so far.

-There is still an entire day left! My top choices of players left to take with the top pick in the 3rd Round:

1) WR Early Doucet 2) LB Dan Conner 3) WR Mario Manningham

More tomorrow. Toodles and hell yeah Magic!

NFL.com - The Dolphins claim that second-round pick Chad Henne could start at quarterback for the team this season, according to NFL.com.

"That's up to him," general manager Jeff Ireland said of Henne starting. "It's going to bring some competition to the position. It's going to be a good battle."

He will compete with John Beck, a second-round pick in 2007, and recently-acquired veteran Josh McCown.

"I don't know if I'll have the opportunity to step in right now," Henne said. "But I'll prepare like I'm going to compete for the starting job."

It's going to be interesting to see the QB position battle. I don't think Henne will exactly win the position this year, but eventually he will take over.

It's weird how the rival Jets snagged Gholston. He'll be going up against Jake Long to get to Henne for a pretty long time it seems. Almost like it was destiny or something.

I agree. My guess is Beck starts this year with McCown as backup. Henne will likely be 3rd string and move up to second as the season progresses.

Really, really happy we actually have options at QB for once. :D

Jason Taylor to the Redskins for a 2nd rounder in 2009 and a 6th in 2010:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3497625

Great trade for both sides. Skins get some relief as their team was decimated by injuries at DE this offseason, and the Phins get a veritable boatload of compensation for a old player who will likely only play another 2 years. Parcells played this one really smart by holding on for a 2nd rounder or better during and after the draft.

With the last Marino holdover traded, a new generation of Dolphins football officially begins. Hopefully Parcells makes it a spectacular one.

I wonder how dedicated to playing Taylor will be. I know he's been busy with various activities this offseason.

I think this was a good move by the Dolphins.

Dolphins just kicked the Chargers' a**, meaning on back-to-back weeks they beat last year's AFC championship game teams.

This ain't last year's Dolphins. Next on tap: The Houston Texans
