The new look Magic head west for big test

They're a team with diminishing playoff hopes and an overhauled roster, but the Orlando Magic still have managed to excite, and perhaps add to, their fan base.

Want proof? Consider a moment from Orlando's 102-89 victory Friday night against Seattle. The SuperSonics just committed a technical foul, and the Magic's new point guard prepared to take a foul shot.

"Carlos Arroyo will shoot the 'T,' " the PA announcer said.

The crowd, some waving the flag of Puerto Rico, roared.

Not just cheered, but roared.

For a team that was 19-34 at the time, that's no small feat.

Over the next 27 games, fans will start to learn whether the newcomers -- Arroyo (right), Darko Milicic and Trevor Ariza -- should be a part of the team's long-term plans.

Their next games will provide a big test. A five-game road trip against Western Conference teams begins Tuesday, when the Magic face Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

For now, though, excitement surrounds the Magic.

"Sometimes a move like this, or a series of moves, can give a team new life," Magic veteran Grant Hill said.

Other Magic games:

Orlando at Golden State, Wed., 10:30 p.m. -- G Baron Davis has missed the Warriors' last five games with a sprained right ankle.

Orlando at Phoenix, Fri., 9 p.m. -- The Suns have won six games in a row.

Orlando at Denver, Sat., 9 p.m. -- Carmelo Anthony has scored 24 or more points in Denver's last eight games.

As long as we outscore the opponent, we should win. We are 20-0 when outscoring the opponent.

We're gonna play the Lakers, Warriors, Suns, Nuggets and Jazz. The bad thing is their all good teams. I think we're gonna win 1 out of the 5, maybe 2 at the most.

With the trip to Utah, perhaps Arroyo will try and stick to Sloan?

Golden State is a possible win as well. Depends on how well Richardson is contained.

I think the Warriors are an easier team to beat then the Jazz. The 1 win I think would be against the Warriors then maybe the 2nd which would be the Jazz. Arroyo better go all out when we play the Jazz. I predict 20 pts and 8 ast.
