McDyess misses Arroyo's passing

CHICAGO - Antonio McDyess has a busted nose and felt like he was coming down with the flu Friday night. But what really made him feel crummy was the absence of his former setup man.

No one misses Carlos Arroyo more than McDyess, who developed great on-court chemistry with Detroit's former backup point guard, now with the Orlando Magic. Many of McDyess' 12- to 15-foot shots along the wing and baseline came off pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop plays with Arroyo as the feeder.

"He just made it so easy for me to score," McDyess said. "He's such a good passer. I kind of knew where his passes were going to be at any time. Not even looking, I knew where he was going to throw it and when he was going to throw it."

McDyess will have to adjust to playing regularly with Lindsey Hunter, who doesn't run the pick-and-roll quite as adroitly as Arroyo, as well as Chauncey Billups.

Cutting to the basket and setting up in the low post are things McDyess will have to do more often to offset the loss of Arroyo.

"What I'd like to do is get him the ball more in low-block situations and not as many things in pick-and-pop situations," coach Flip Saunders said. "He played well with Carlos, but he'll play well with anybody, how he plays."

Lately, McDyess has been playing with another impediment ‹ a broken nose. McDyess took hits to the face against Philadelphia and Orlando early in the month. He was fi tted Wednesday with a mask similar to the one Richard Hamilton wears but doesn't want to play with it.

McDyess adjusted well Friday, scoring 16 points.

Sorry Mr. McDyess, but those beautiful passes are now finding their way into Dwight Howard's hands...and good luck keeping D12 from scoring next time you see him!!!

And with time, those passes will also find Darko, Hill, Battie, Stevenson, and who knows, even Nelson!

Arroyo is a terrific Pick and Roll and Pick and Pop player, you have already seen some of that with Howard, but wait till you see it with Darko and he starts nailing those open jumpshots out of the pick and pop.

I severely underrated Arroyos part in the trade. This guy can really pass the ball and find our bigs underneath. Against the Nets he was making Kasun look great! And I had no idea he was a good shooter like that. And the guy is really careful with the ball.

Didn't they signed Tony Delk from the waivers? Good luck getting the ball from him, Dice. Detroit underestimated both Darko and Arroyo. They pay dearly fro their mistake when this team "smack'em in their mouth with the Trophy" ( quote from Sheed) in a few years. ;)
