ORLANDO, Fla. - Four days into a fresh opportunity at redemption, and Darko Milicic is already sulking. The name on the uniform is different, but the seat at the end of the bench hasn't changed.
He doesn't get it. And he probably never will.
He can't even play on a team that has given up hope on the season.
"I didn't come here to sit on the bench," Milicic said Thursday after the Orlando Magic's practice. "I tell myself that everything will be fine here, but right now, nothing has changed. I want to play. I need to play. I learn nothing sitting on the bench."
Nothing has changed. Darko still blames other factors for his inactivity. He eagerly embraced his emancipation from the Pistons, somehow convincing himself that liberation from his self-described "nightmare" would immediately register into consistent playing time with the Magic.
But Darko didn't play one second in his second game with the Magic, Wednesday at New Jersey.
"You have to ask them why," Darko said of the coaches.

So now, BHill's overly protective style of not throwing Darko in the games is causing some problems.

I know its only been 2 games, but there is no reason for Darko not to get at least 10 minutes for each of those games.

Granted that Darko needs to learn how to play in the Magic sets, but he will never learn it while sitting on the bench and not even able to play a single minute.

Brian Hill have a history of not using his bench players. When he was here last time, Brian Shaw was the only player that played consistently off the bench. That was because he backed up both Penny and Nick. Everybody else pretty much had to wait until the game was a blowout, a starter was in deep foul trouble or a serious injury to a starter.

Please, everyone posting about how Hill sucks for not playing Darko in the his first week here, read the post jsj05 made above...

That interview is not recent. It's refering to his time as a Piston.

If you can, listen to the interview he gave yesterday after his first practise with the team. He's happy to be here and he knows his role here. He's gotta earn his PT in practises.

But was his time in Detroit really "a nightmare," as he called it this week before he played his first game with the Magic?

Milicic, 20, found freedom and riches he never could have envisioned as a kid in war-torn Serbia and Montenegro.

This part of the article really bothers me. When Darko said that it was a nightmare, he was speaking in relative basketball terms about his benching in Detroit. At the same time as he mentioned the nightmare, he stated that he would miss his Pistons teammates. It's not as if Darko said that his time in Detroit was the worst possible human experience ever.

And of course it is way better to be making NBA money than it is to be making whatever small amount Darko was making playing in Serbia, but it's unfair and a stretch to bring that up and use it against Darko's "nightmare" comment.

A ton of NBA players probably had it worse growing up in America's inner cities than Darko had it in Serbia. If one of them had gone through a similar two-and-a-half season benching situation as Darko and made a similar comment as he did, would the writer have said, "Nightmare? Be glad you're out of the projects, pal." ?

Erm... if Darko was in Serbia untill his 17, then he went through a bloody war in his country during his teenage years, his president was a dictator that was judged in the international court of law for crimes against the humanity... I think that's quite worse than living in any suburb on any amercian city...

He was referring to the pistons, not Orlando. He just said yesterday that he was happy to be here and get a chance to play.

I wasn't comparing the quality of life in Serbia to that in an American suburb. I was suggesting that bringing this up as an X against Darko's "nightmare" comment in the article was out of context. Of course there are many, many worse things in the world than getting paid millions of dollars to sit at the end of the bench for a pro basketball team.

There is nothing worse than not being put into the game when you want to play that bad. It's a good sign when an NBA player actually wants to earn his money instead of most who are more worried about 24 inch rims and bentley's than boxing out they're man in the post. Looks like we actually have a basketball player on our hands instead of pre madonna.

Tonight's game is huge for Hill's relationship with Darko. Darko needs at least 8 minutes (which isnt asking much) just to let it be known that the more he gets involved in the system, the more he will play.
The pistons had all stars, we have Dwight and thats it in front of Darko. Like trade analysts said: the only way we can mess this up is if we dont play him.

Im telling you, Otis will speak to B. Hill and Darko will get some PT tonight.

Wow, I think everyone is overreacting a little bit. Its been four days, gimme a break. Seems like everyone is ready to crucify Hill for not giving Darko enough playing time. He is the coach, and although our season is already lost, its still his duty to try and win ball games. If he feels that not playing Darko yet gives him his best chance to win the game, than that is what he is going to do. Obviously, he felt Arroyo was more able to come in and contribute right away, but maybe Darko isnt at that level yet, and is going to take a week or two to get acclimated. Just give it a rest guys, have a little patience, and lets see how this goes. Im gonna support Hill...
