oh no! hes got a new BF!

btw, i HATE THIS DEAL!

ariza: 4.6 ppg
hardaway: 2.5

for francis: 16.2 ppg

were going to be like the blazers! struggling to score. this sucks bad. i wonder if they will play tonight. were playing in NJ so maybe they can join us since its close. but theres the help at SF that weve needed for a LOOONNNG time.

so our SL is now (counting injuries):

C- Battie
PF- Howard
SF- Ariza
SG- Stevenson
PG- Arroyo

You have to look at this deal long term. We can't be short sighted when trying to make sense of this trade. Think about the amount of money we are clearing up not only at the end of this year, but how much money we have after Hill comes off the books. Have you seen the free agent list after next year. if you think about it we could use the penny money to sign a good free agent after this season and one after next season, or we could sign some guys from the 07 free agent list. In other words it gives us felxability to build around Dwight, which is what every one has been yelling at the GM's to do. Well, you can't do that with out money, so I think this deal is going to be good for us, Plus Ariza is another player that hasnt had the consistant playing time he needs to prove himself. I like this trade.

I'll warm up to the trade later I guess. It's just kinda frustrating to lose a player like Francis for nothing. Hopefully it will work out for the best (BTW is there any chance NY could be sending us some draft picks? Possibly make up for the 1st rounder in the Darko deal?)

I just read a new addition to that article that's much more optomistic and promising:

Quote:

For the Magic, the trade will provide salary cap relief to a franchise that can now go further beneath the cap than any of the league's 30 teams in the summer of 2007 when a bumper crop of free agents will be on the market, giving Orlando several options in figuring out how to rebuild around 20-year-old power forward Dwight Howard.

On the scoring part:
Sure we're going to struggle to score, we lose games and be ugly at times. But Dwight needs to work on scoring the most. How will Dwight learn how to score if Francis is chucking away 13 attempts per game, or Crawford is chucking away 15 attempts per game.
Currently Dwight is 5th on the team for FG attempts. I assure you that will change now that the whole team dynamic is different.

Will this trade monetarily help us resign Dwight when that time comes?

To reiterate that article I just posted:

We will have the MOST money of any team entering the summer of 2007 free agency.

MagicLive, like dxwwf3 said, how are you so sure there will be an ORLANDO Magic in 2007-2008. For all we know, we could be the KC Magic, or the Oak. City Magic, or the Las Vegas Magic, etc...This deal BLOWS donkeys...I just lost my lunch all over my keyboard

Well those are the two most important things right now. Hopefully the team will be able to hold on in Orlando long enough to see the positive effects of this.

Steve Francis is headed to New York under a deal agreed to Wednesday by the Knicks and the Orlando Magic.

The teams agreed to a trade of Francis for Penny Hardaway and Trevor Ariza, two league sources with knowledge of the deal told ESPN.com.

The trade was expected to be announced later Wednesday afternoon after being called in to the league office.

In New York, Francis will be paired with Stephon Marbury as the highest-paid backcourt duo in the NBA.

The Knicks were still talking with several other clubs as team president Isiah Thomas worked at remaking a roster that has stumbled to the league's second-worst record, 15-37.

Like efnell said, I dont think the Magic are in a position to trade away a talented player for nothing in order to potentially sign another talented player two years down the road. I dont know that the community is gonna put up with another two years of sucking. I think we needed to trade Francis for actual talent, not money down the road. I guess its good that we got Ariza and didnt have to lose garrity, but I dont like Hardaway on this team, especially after what happened last time hardaway and bhill were together. I just dont want to see them start fighting and making the magic look ridiculous for bringing back a aplayer and coach that practically ruined a team last time they were together. If anything happens this time, I fear it could be the stupid move that finally pushes the magic over the edge... to a team that nobody wants to play for, regardless of money.

I've been waiting a while to sign up, and have come close several times over the past few months, so hi, I'm new. So, let's move on to the trade, which has finally made me go ahead and register here.

First off, I love this trade. We get rid of Francis, which needed to happen. Francis didn't fit into the philosophy of the team. He just didn't fit anymore. Last year? Yeah, he was a great fit because the philosophy of the team was different then. However, this year was a completely different outlook for the team when Brian Hill came in. It had to be a team effort now. No more Steve Francis show accompanied by Dwight Howard, Grant Hill, and Hedo Turkoglu. Steve didn't understand that it was going to be the young guys that would make this team who they are. That's Dwight and Jameer. He just didn't understand it.

When the Magic traded for Darko and Arroyo, that's when the Magic finally decided that it was time to change the players on the team to fit the philosophy it was trying to instill. Bringing in young guys like Arroyo and Darko, guys who want a chance to show what they've got was a brillant move. Now, trading for Ariza, and Penny who won't even see the bench this season, means that they've gotten rid of their biggest headcase and gone ahead with the transformation. You have a ton of team-first young guys on this team now. Jameer, Dwight, Tony, Darko, Arroyo, Stevenson, etc. This is going to be the team of the future. It's a team that has a ton of potential, and while they may not show it this season, next year, they're going to come out and surprsie a lot of people. They'll have a top five draft pick, and maybe a new guy or two.

With Bo gone, Mario Kasun on his way out as well as Stacey Augmon, we're going with youth and skill. The Magic will resign Tony Battie next year, and be content with their core team that they'll want to keep around. People think Jameer and Dwight will both want Max contracts, but I don't think so. They're in love with the organization. If the team comes to them, tells them their plans, then I think they will sign for contracts that will allow for that to happen. That'll allow them to keep Arroyo and Darko as well, because they're both already thankful that the Magic traded for them, and are in love with it here. These two as well, I see them signing nice contracts, but going for that team environment, very much like the Pistons. You'll have Grant and Hedo as well, plus Keyon Dooling, Travis Diener, DeShawn Stevenson, Pat Garrity, Trevor Ariza Tony Battie, and whoever they draft next year, plus two new signees. preferably another big man and another wing player.

Everyone also keeps calling for the Magic to sign some big 2007 Free Agent, but I don't see it happening. The Maic already have their superstars in Jameer and Dwight. Just groom them, and commit that money to the players that continue to play well for your team. This is a team that they need to keep around for a few years so that they can have some consistency on the team as opposed to previous years where we keep blowing up the team. This team will be able to score once Jameer gets back, and I see Dwight continuing to average 20 points a game for the rest of the season. Arroyo will probably be starting tonight, and this is the guy who came in when John Stockton retired, and led the team to a 42-40 record. Keep this guy. If Darko plays like he did last night, then that's good. Keep playing hard, tough defense, and he'll get his shots once he's comfortable around the team. Battie is consistent. Maybe re-sign Grant to a low contract. Something tells me he'll go for that because of the fact that the Magic stuck by him during his surgeries, and he'll feel like he owes something to them. Plus, his family has been rooted here now. He won't want to pull them out and move again.

Just some quick thoughts. More later.

Craig
