NY Times - The rebuilding effort by Isiah Thomas is as unsightly as promised, probably more so, and there is no telling whether his next bold move, which appears imminent, will make matters better or worse.

Thomas, the Knicks' president, has a deal in place to acquire guard Steve Francis from the Orlando Magic , and the trade could be completed as early as Wednesday, according to a person involved in the discussions. The person, who was granted anonymity because he was not authorized to talk about the negotiations publicly, said a trade bringing Francis to New York was "more likely than not."

Knicks officials would not confirm or deny that a deal was in place, but they have made no attempts to dispel the recent rumors about a Francis deal.

The current proposal, according to the person, would send guard Jamal Crawford, forward Maurice Taylor and possibly the swingman Trevor Ariza to Orlando. The Knicks would obtain Francis and forward Pat Garrity.

Penny Hardaway's expiring contract, which the Knicks have sought to use in a number of potential deals, would not be included in the Francis trade. Hardaway could still be moved in a deal to land one of the Knicks' other targets, among them Portland's Theo Ratliff and Darius Miles, and Denver's Earl Watson.

AND here is news about Crawford getting told to pack his bags by Isiah:

The Knicks are confident that Penny Hardaway's expiring contract will land them either Orlando's Steve Francis or Denver's Kenyon Martin, according to a league source.
The Knicks have been in talks with both the Magic and the Nuggets, and the feeling is the Knicks will have a deal in place by tomorrow's 3 p.m. trading deadline.

There is also the possibility that Portland could re-enter the negotiations. The Blazers are considering trading 6-10 shot-blocker Theo Ratliff plus another player - believed to be Darius Miles - for Hardaway. The deal the Knicks would prefer is Martin and Nuggets point guard Earl Watson for Hardaway and another player.

The Knicks would not confirm an Internet report that said a long-rumored deal that would bring Francis to New York for a package featuring Jamal Crawford is close to being completed.

"The negotiations between both Denver and Orlando are pretty serious," said an Eastern Conference GM who spoke to Knicks president Isiah Thomas earlier in the day.

The Knicks have said for two weeks that they would not include Channing Frye in any deal. Denver has insisted on the rookie power forward being included but may be willing to move off that demand because the Nuggets are looking to trim their payroll.

Francis would be an upgrade over Crawford, but it is debatable whether Francis, who dominates the ball, would be a good fit with Stephon Marbury and Jalen Rose.

Miles, a player Thomas has pursued for two years, could finally land at the Garden if there is a deal for Ratliff. The Knicks would like to add point guard Steve Blake, but the Blazers are unlikely to give up on a solid player who makes virtually nothing.

It's a foregone conclusion that this trade is done. It appears the Knicks are already looking at other trades with Portland and the Nuggets are focusing on a deal with the Sonics for Watson.

BYE BYE FRANCIS!

I'm not really sold on this deal. We're basically getting rid of Francis for a worse player in Crawford, along with Mo Taylor, who's pretty much a waste of space. At least Azira might turn out good...

WHY THE HELL DOES THIS ORGANIZATION WANT JAMAL CRAWFORD SO BADLY?!?!

I think they just want a replacement starter for Francis and he unfortunately is the best available in the trade market right now.

I remember Crawdaddy being pretty good when he was with the Bulls. I actually think he had a 50 point game. A change of scenery could benefit him, you never know.

If we do this i would like to see the lineup of
Pg Jamal Crawford 14 ppg and 4 apg
Sg Carlos Arroyo 12.6 ppg and 5 apg when started in utah
Sf Trevo Ariza 5 ppg 4 rpg and 1 spg
Pf Dwight Howard 15 ppg and 12 rpg
C Darko Milicic 1 ppg and 1 rpg

That would be a fun team to watch

Further cementing Francis' New York fate:
From the Rocky Mountain News:

Quote:

That's because, at this point, it's looking like Knicks-or-Bust for the Artist Formerly Known As Stevie Franchise.

Minnesota, I'm told, is no longer pursuing Francis. Denver appears to be pursuing a variety of trade targets not named Francis, with Baltimore's Carmelo Anthony said to be less than excited by the Nuggets' earlier attempts to bring the former Maryland man to the Rocky Mountains.

That leaves New York as the only known trade partner in circulation for Francis. In what would be an audacious double swoop -- even by Knicks standards -- it appears that Isiah will have an opportunity to package Jamal Crawford, Maurice Taylor and a youngster like Trevor Ariza for Francis . . . and then use Penny Hardaway's expiring contract (along with at least one first-round pick) to acquire Portland's Darius Miles and Theo Ratliff.

I honestly hope we get Ariza. Could be a good player for us.

if we get Jamal Crawford, we should start him at SG, not PG. Carlos Arroyo showed us last night that he deserves a shot at the 1. Starting Crawford there won't change anything and Howard won't get the ball.

Since Crawford is a three-point threat, he can spread the floor on offense, making it easier for Arroyo to distribute the ball, but he's gonna have to step it up defensively.

The downside: Since we lost Turk last night and most likely will ship out Pat Garrity with Francis, we're gonna lose all of our shooters, except for Diener and possibly Jameer, who's injured as well.

we should have Arroyo starting at PG being backed up by Dooling and Crawford at SG being backed up by Stevenson.

That lineup actually doesnt sound half bad. With Nelson coming back, we would have a very well rounded team. SF is still our weak spot, but maybe darko can play a very tall SF?

Why don't we sign Sprewell to a 10-day contract to play SF while we wait for Turk to come back?

It's just an idea that came to my mind, but I don't think the Magic would lose out on giving it a try.

Of course not many people want the baggage Sprewell carries with him, but that's why we shouldn't get him long term. Just enough to fill in the position and, who knows, it might even help us win some games.

I don't think Spreewell would be an option. Apparently he wants to play for a contender, and also he wants a sizable contract.
