NOTE FROM THE FORUM OWNER:

We had a long, enjoyable run, and I would like to thank every Orlando Magic fan who contributed to our small community on the web. This message board will be left online as an archive into the thoughts and minds of a group of Magic fanatics who lived through a 21-win season, the drafting of Dwight Howard, and an eventual NBA Finals appearance. Hedo Turkoglu is about to be replaced in the Magic's starting lineup by Grant Hill. Does he rant or rave in Turkish and ask for a trade like Ron Artest?

No -- not Hedo.

Turkoglu is as unpretentious and laid-back as they come.

This summer, Turk fulfilled his mandatory obligation in the Turkish Army. And although he's a celebrity in his country, he didn't make a fuss when he had to rise at 6 a.m. for trash detail.

"People are looking at me like I'm a celebrity. People are looking up to me and I didn't want to be any different from the other soldiers," Turkoglu said. "I have to wake up 6 in morning, clean some areas. I go pick up trash, cigarettes off the floor.

"It's going to make people feel better about the army. They never know what people come and give them a headache. I didn't want people coming in and saying they wanted to get [different] treatment like me."

Turkoglu, 25, said he wanted to avoid getting into trouble like former NBA center Vlade Divac. The Serbia-Montenegro army filed charges against Divac for evading the military draft.

Divac, 37, was already two years late in joining the service. The matter has been resolved.

"It's mandatory, you have to go. There's no way to get out of it. I did it when I was young so I won't have problem like Vlade," said Turkoglu, who served a three-week stint and learned how to shoot a gun.

"It was good. It's a totally different experience, a different world. You respect how they train and take orders."

Hedo in an army outfit: an image that ranks as one of the least likely things I imagined having on my mind as I relaxed on my couch tonight.
