RealGM - RealGM.com's Christopher Reina has learned that Quentin Richardson will be dealt to the Knicks in exchange for Kurt Thomas and a future conditional number one draft choice. This deal is pending league approval and should be formally announced after Game 7 of the NBA Finals on Thursday.

The deal was confirmed to Reina by a source close to the trade negotiations.

There was little doubt that one of the Suns’ five starters would not be back for the 2005-2006 season and Richardson is the player that Bryan Colangelo and the Suns have decided to move. The move indicates that Joe Johnson is the shooting guard that the Suns want on their team long-term.

Thomas is signed through the 2009 season, while Richardson, whose game overlaps with Johnson's, is signed through the 2009 season as well and the Suns have a team option for the 2009-2010 season.

Richardson averaged 15 points and six rebounds per game in his first season with Phoenix. He made 226 3-pointers, tied for first in the NBA with Philadelphia's Kyle Korver, with the high-powered Suns, compared to 120 in his final season with the Los Angeles Clippers .

Thomas, a 10-year veteran, gives the Suns a player who averaged 11.5 and 10.4 rebounds per game last season with the Knicks. He will allow Shawn Marion to slide back to the small forward position and Amare Stoudemire will be less exposed at center, playing beside a power forward of Thomas' caliber.

He also gives the Suns another player that can stay outside on the pick & roll to let Steve Nash drive and dish to the open man, as Thomas is one of the best power forwards in the league at hitting a mid-range jump shot.

Clear advantage goes to the Suns on this one...at least for the short term. Kurt Thomas is better than serviceable. He averaged a double-double last season and has a solid mid range shot.

This trade also allows Marion to move to SF. He got worn down as the playoffs advanced. Banging down low against Nowitzki, TD, Garnett, Martin, Brand, etc, on almost a nightly basis will take its toll.

Although Kurt Thomas is foul-prone, he has a deadly mid-range jumper which would draw PF's out of the lane. That allow Nash to have even more room to operate. Another screen-roll combo that works for PHX. The pick and pop for the jumper. TWO THUMBS UP for Phoenix.

Nash
Joe Johnson
Marion
Kurt Thomas
Amare

I think the Suns are shooting themselfs in the foot with this one... it's bad for NY, and Phx. What made PHX so unique is that they had, joe, Q, and marion on the perimeter, while nash and Amare ran the show. They just broke that unique offense. I know Kurt got that midrange jumper but you can easily go off of him to help on Amare. I think Phx will drop to the 5-8 seed in the west. While Q sucked in the playoffs, as has been said, the only reason they were able to take the league by storm was because Marion's ability to play the 4 allowed them to be the only team in the league able to play it's 4 most 'skilled' players all together the majority of the game. Any other team has to have some lesser big man out there for rebounding purposes in place of a guard - think Cato over Nelson-. With Q gone, and Marion back to the '3', throw that out the window, and while they may seem more balanced with a conventional lineup, they don't seem nearly as deadly.

The trade makes absolutely zero sense from New York's perspective, but of course I don't expect anything else from them.

Maybe the Suns are building their own version of the Pistons' PF-C tandem -- one who's all defense and rebounding (Thomas/ Wallace) and the other a nightmare on offense (Amare and Sheed). Granted, Big Ben is a better defender and force than Thomas, but Amare could very well surpass Sheed at the rate he's going.
Isiah should get Executive of the Year if not the Decade. Think about it -- he traded FOR Marbury, giving the Suns the room to sign guys like Nash and Q. Result? Suns in WCF.

Zeke trades Mohammed to SA for Malik Rose? Result: Spurs in Game 7 of the Finals.

Congrats, Isiah -- you ARE the Executive of the Decade. If not that, then you should be the league's reigning Humanitarian -- taking on bloated, overpriced, contracts for the good of other GMs everywhere.

HAHA.. GREAT POST!! Zeke has NO CLUE what he's doing up there it seems.. I like the part of turning the Sun into a team like the Pistons, but I dont see the Sun playing much D next year..I do think you are right in that, that's what they are tring to do though.. I could see the Suns playing TONS of pick and rolls now. and this will give Amare a chance to play even less D then he does now on all the ture Centers in the leauge.. I hope he will shutup about being tired of guarding big men all the time now..

how is this bad for NY? it is bad for the suns cuz it will slow down the pace of thier offense and will not be as great on the perimeter (i bet they dont go far in the playoffs next season). but as for NY this is great, their whole team sucks, except for marbury, so this ads size, 3pt range, and a good scorer. yeah they give up kurt thomas, but they sucked anyway so maybe this can help a little.

In case you did not notice Q-Rich disappeared in the playoffs. That's why the Suns really want to move him. Now they got a reliable big in Kurt Thomas.

The Suns were able to dump a unwanted player and get a player they need. As for NY, who know what they need - a new team president perhaps. They now have alot of overrated players up there.

It could go either way, really. But so far it's looking good for the Knicks.
