NEW YORK - An agreement on an NBA collective bargaining agreement is expected by the end of the month after an 11-hour meeting Friday ended with an NBA source saying "both sides are very optimistic."

Commissioner David Stern, union director Billy Hunter and several owners, including the Rockets' Les Alexander, and players met at a Manhattan hotel, the first substantive talks in weeks on a new agreement to replace the seven-year deal expiring June 30.

"We made significant progress today and tonight," deputy commissioner Russ Granik said.

"We took some positive steps forward today. There will be some follow-up this weekend, and we'll reconvene Tuesday," Hunter also said in a statement.

this is great for the nba and its players. if they get a deal done, then no lockout. it seems like they will get a deal dont so this is great news for everyone!

Yes, this is really good news to hear, something I wasn't expecting. I really hope they can work this all out not only for the sake of basketball, but for our sake, the state of the Magic.

With the organization trying to renew interest in the team, a lockout (and the negativity that would come from one) would obviously hurt us.

i too was very surprised to hear that they had mad progress in the labor talks. people just dont understand that yes, nba players make a ton of money but they also spend a ton of money.

nba players make a ton of money but they also spend a ton of money.

I still cant get over Spree complaining that he has "to feed his children", when he was being offered $10M/season. So you are right, most of us fans and casual fans cannot understand (or maybe the better work is "accept") that having a $10M annual paycheck is not enough - I wont even make a tiny fraction of that in my lifetime of slavery.

It's just difficult to relate to guys who have like 20 cars (beemers, bentleys, ferraris, H2s) on their garage, lives an huge mansions, and still complaining that they are not paid enough.
