Smith says there's one other thing he'd like to see Dwight change: Stop smiling so much, and get mean.

Howard's happy-go-lucky personality doesn't exactly strike fear into opponents. He has yet to develop that Garnett snarl. He doesn't throw his weight around with a fierce aggression.

So Smith enjoyed Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning -- long known for his glaring intimidation -- getting physical with Howard when they met in the season finale.

"I like what Zo did, slapping Dwight around a little," Smith says. "Dwight needs to get a little nasty. He can put that in his memory bank.

"I've tried to get Dwight to stop grinning on the court so much. He has that Magic Johnson smile. He dunks and smiles, and I tell him to act like he's been there before.

"That's not saying the beast isn't inside."

More assembly is required with Howard, obviously. In the past decade, every prep-to-pros player -- with the exception of the Cleveland Cavaliers' James -- has felt growing pains. But they largely have improved from Year 1 to Year 2.

The Magic just hope that Howard follows the pattern.

Garnett averaged 10.4 points and 6.3 rebounds his rookie season and 17 points and eight rebounds the next season. Bryant averaged 7.6 points and 1.9 rebounds his first season and 15.4 points and 3.1 rebounds his sophomore season.

"I'll say one thing: Dwight doesn't lack for confidence for 19," Smith says. "He thinks he should be where he is, and there's no excuse for him not to do wonderful, great things."

Dwight Howard is certainly in a hurry to get there.

he does smile alot and probably makes people think he is a fool. he does need to get the "KG" mindset and he can really whoop some ass next year when he beefs up and gets better.

This guy who "smiles too much" seems to dunk on a whole lot of people. I have seen Dwight get aggressive and angry, he isnt all smiles all the time. He tossed Kenyon Martin into the first row when he got angry. An aggressive Dwight is a scary thought. I admit he was tentative a lot this season, rookie jitters if you ask me. He will come back bigger, stronger and with a full 82 games under his belt, another summer league and a whole offseason working with Clifford Ray. Dwight Howard starts his domination game #1 next season.

A smile can be pretty intimidating too.

If Magic Johnson was able to smile all throughout his career and dominate, why on earth are they worried about Dwight's smile. A smile can excude confidence much like Magic did. So if Dwight can mix it up, dominate and smile that will be awesome.

It's about time we see player who actually looks like he is enjoying playing without looking like something is stuck up his ass.

Just my 2 cents.

"Magic should sink teeth into Howard's smile"
by Mike Bianchi

Orlando Magic management really has gone and done it now.
They've told Dwight Howard not to smile so much. I know what Smith is trying to do. He's trying to instill toughness. He wants Howard to start knocking out teeth instead of showing them.

Don't listen, Dwight.

there are some things best left out of the hands of tough-guy General Manager John Weisbrod and his personnel posse -- and charisma and persona are definitely two of them. Telling Dwight Howard to quit smiling so much is like telling Streisand to quit singing so many beautiful songs. Why discourage perfection? Howard has the absolute best smile in sports and lights up the arena every time he flashes it.

"As Dwight's dentist," Bilancione says, "I say he needs to keep on smiling. He has one of the broadest, ear-to-ear grins I've ever seen. In fact, I think smiling actually helps his performance. Not only does smiling help Howard play better, it helps us feel better

why is there this sullen culture today that says the public face of preference worn by athletes should be an angry glare? Who came up with the mentality that you can't grin and win? Why is it you have to scowl to show how tough you are?

And why can't you build a winning team around a winning smile? Joe Frazier, one of the toughest heavyweight fighters in history? When he'd get hit particularly hard during a fight, you know what he'd do? He'd smile as if to say, "Is that all you got?", then proceed to beat the bejabbers out of his poor opponent. And what about Magic Johnson, one of the NBA's fiercest competitors who radiantly beamed his way to five championships?

Playing sports is an absolute blast, so what's wrong with acting like you're having fun out there?
The Orlando Magic have a phenomenal rookie with a captivating personality.
