NEW YORK -- As Orlando moved closer to a new or refurbished home for the Magic, NBA Commissioner David Stern reiterated his desire to keep the team in its current location.

"Our goal is to keep all our teams where they are,' said Stern, addressing a group of the country's top sports editors. "Every time a team moves it's considered a failure."

Stern acknowledged that Seattle and Sacramento join Orlando as cities wrestling with arena issues. Yet, Stern was quick to say that building a state-of-the-art arena, such as currently being done in Kansas City, is not going to get you a franchise.

"We didn't tell them to build an arena; maybe they can have a WNBA team if they meet the right criteria," Stern joked when asked specifically about Kansas City.

Stern also ruled out any city getting a franchise through expansion.

"We think 30 is enough given the business structure of the NBA. We feel fully developed with 30 teams."

Stern would not directly address the situation in Orlando but did say he would be glad to speak with government leaders, if asked. He has already had conversations with officials in Seattle and Sacramento in hopes of helping them navigate the idea of new venues.

"If a city builds a symphony hall, there is a cultural benefit to the city, despite the fact that the hall is not likely to make money," he said. "The same can be said for having an NBA franchise.

"Ultimately, these are decisions that cities themselves have to make."

Facilities are not a front burner issue for Stern right now as the league moves to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement with the players. The NBA is hoping to raise its current age limit for players entering the league. Currently, you can join the league if you are 18 years old.

Hopefully he gets what he wants here. KC can use their new area to host the Ice Capades or something. We can keep the Magic.

I dont like seeing teams move, the Grizzlies needed a move. and in my opinion they are the only team since New Orleans in 79 that needed a move.

Memphis is a great move, but moving the Magic from here to KC would make things worse for the team. I'm not afraid of KC taking this team, but if St. Louis rears its' head in the discusion, OH SH*T!!!
We'll be o.k. if St. Louis stays out of this franchise's business.
David Stern can say whatever he wants about wanting the team to stay in O-Town, and I'm glad he said that, but he doesn't have the final word, the city and franchise do.
It's a HUGE PLUS THAT DYER'S BACK.

David Stern rocks if for nothing other than that Kansas City MAYBE getting a WNBA team. What a great jab at a city and a woman's league in one convenient sentence!
