Christie has been in the NBA for 13 seasons, carving a reputation as an outstanding defensive player who is unselfish offensively. But even before this season began, it was obvious that he was no longer quite the defensive stopper he once was.

The Magic still liked him defensively, but they also liked his contract, which will expire after next season. Center Kelvin Cato ($8.6 million) and forward Tony Battie ($5.2 million) also have contracts that expire after next season, giving Orlando the ability to go far under the salary cap to make them a major player in the 2006 free-agent market.

(The above was part of an article about Christie posted earlier)

Awesome! :)

I'm sure some of you already knew about this, but I didn't...

Who exactly is available? I'm sure there is a FA list somewhere on the internet.

'06-'07 would be our last chance to cement this franchise in O-Town for good, so that should be an interesting summer. But for right now, I think we better keep our eyes on this summer. :D

I wonder if the Bulls would let Tyson Chandler get away. This guy is young and is 7'1!! He is a rebounding machine to!!! Him and Howard could be together for years to come and would dominate!!!

I would even like Shareef Abdur-Rahim if Portland doesnt re-sign him.

I would love for us to grab someone who could stay with us for years to come, but sadly I think that anyone we grab this offseason will have a contract expiring soon a la christie

Donyell Marshall is pretty good too.

And, if he can forgive JW, maybe even Cat. :)

I wouldn't get my hopes up that much though. Rigth now we are about 20 million over the salary cap, so unless we get rid of Francis or Hill for cap room, we will only be a couple million under. With our current players(6 players still under contract) for 2006, we are already at 47.2 million and that doesn't factor in the other 6 players that would be on our roster(including 2 rookie 1st round contracts). I'm sorry to be the pessimist, but we would have to get rid of a lot more salary in order to have enough cap room to be a major player. Here's where I got this info.

We are better off, IMO in just trading Cato, Battie, and Christie for something halfway decent then keeping them.

No worries man, its good to have a realist on the board. It's easy in forums to just go along with the "Maybe we can bring Michael Jordan out of retirement!" ridiculously optomistic posts.

D*mn it why can't their contracts expire after this year. It'd be better cause then the magic wouldn't have to go through trade scenarios.Maybe some other team has some player who hasn't panned out,and they just want to dump them for cato, battie, and christie.Don't think it would happen cause those 3 haven't done too great either, but they're role players, nothing great is really expected of them.which makes it even more likely that they can't get a trade done.

Yeah orlando is a slightly more attractive option to potential players than hell right now. Especially with Christie telling everyone we suck.

dude are you SURE?? If you read the Sentinel articles and quotes from JW himself he says that keeping battie, cato, and chrisite w/ all of them having expiring contracts after next year we will be 23 million dollars under the cap
