January 20, 2005 - Hip-hop culture and basketball have always shared an intrinsic relationship. If there is one sport that could be singled out as the "unofficial official sport of hip-hop" it would unquestionably be the game of hoops. How else to explain the proliferation of b-ball players who have taken their turn as MC's (think Shaq, Kobe, Cedric Ceballos, Jason Kid, Ron Artest, Brian Shaw, Malik Sealy, Dana Barros, Dennis Scott, J.R. Rider, Gary Payton, Chris Mills, and others), as well as many rapper's continued love of the game (J-Zone, Kurtis Blow, and others).

Keeping in tune with this synergy between sports and music, EA Sports has chosen the Beastie Boys' "An Open Letter To NYC" to headline the in-game soundtrack of their NBA Street franchise.

"Once again, EA TRAX delivers the ultimate in game music. Beastie Boys are among the most influential artists of all time, and their participation in NBA Street V3 represents an unprecedented new coming-together of hip-hop, basketball and videogame culture," said Steve Schnur, Worldwide Executive of Music at EA.

But the Beastie's music isn't the only thing popping off in NBA Street V3. In a bold move, EA Sports have taken this latest installment of the game to the next level by placing the well-known rap icons into the center of the action as playable characters [hardcore heads will no doubt recall that the Beasties appeared in NBA Jam: Tournament Edition].

Making digitized history, the Grammy-nominated rap trio have transferred their wild, humorous, and Old School flavored b-boy energy into the game play. Decked out in gear from their hometown team the New York Knicks, Adrock, MCA, and Mike D. appear in NBA Street V3 as unlockable characters. As befitting their individual character traits, each Beastie has different skills that will help players able to unlock the Boys to own the court. The secret is to face off against the Beastie Boys in NYC's Dyckman Park in the "Street Challenge" mode. If you win the challenge, then you will unlock all three Beasties for all the other modes of the game, including regular 3-on-3 action and the all-new Slam Dunk Contest.

Beastie Boys fans out there might remember the trio playing as secret characters in NBA Jam: Tournament Edition back on the 16-bit systems. This is awesome, IMO. I had NBA Street 2 but wasn't really planning on buying this new one...but now I am.
