A few days ago their was a HUMONGOUS 9.0 Richter earthquake 200 miles from Sumatra which is part of Indonesia. The earthquake occurred out in the Indian Ocean which sadly led to numerous tsunamis (huge waves) that were around 20 meters high (like 60 feet!!!). This earthquake had sent these enormous tsunamis as far as Northern AFrica!!!! The earthquake has killed people in 20 countries! The total CONFIRMED death count at this point is OVER 44,000 PEOPLE DEAD!!!!!!!!! And what's even worse, is that most of the dead are children who couldn't swim through these massive waves that destroyed beachside villages, and flooded major cities. There are also a lot of tourists and government officials from many countries over there. This is a worldwide catastrophe that each day keeps getting worse. |

This is very rare in the Indian Ocean and countries like Thailand does have a system set up, but they do not have deep water systems. Plus, this has never happened in the history of Thailand/Phuket and I heard 1 hour was not enough time to make a public alert from Alaska. Indonesia seems to have many earthquakes and tsunamis so they should have set up a tsunamis alert system in the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka and India are not econmically strong enough to set up any systems like this. |

I was watching news stories on this disaster late last night and it's unbelievable how much destruction these tsunamis cause. Around 30,000 people are dead, and many towns are underwater. The ironic thing is that in alot of the video footage shown, people are laughing and acting like it's no big deal. I guess they didn't realize at the time just how much damage the tsunamis were going to cause. |

You are absolutely right. I'm studying Astronomy in my University and recently I had to study about the earth axis and the energy envolved to dislocate it... it's simply unbelievable... the axis was dislocated by almost 5 cm.... and I won't even talk about the earth rotation period being delayed by something like 0.003 sec because that simply goes way beyond my ability to understand it... I mean, I know it happened, but I can't imagine the amount of energy that was needed to do so.... My goodness... so many lost lives....

Now there's over 117,000 CONFIRMED dead. Over 50,000 children are dead, and like another 50,000 are reported missing. There are predictions that the final death count will reach 200,000!
