![]() In celebration of the DSi XL hitting North American shelves today, I post this to share the news that at E3 this year (June 15-17), Nintendo will be introducing their new handheld hardware, the 3DS. Nintendo's press release from March 23 tells us these things for sure: - 3DS "will launch during the fiscal year ending March 2011". - 3DS "games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses". - 3DS "will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed". There is also talk of force feedback, an accelerometer allowing you to tilt the system like an iTouch/iPhone, and a joystick instead of a D-pad. Overall, it doesn't sound that bad to me. In fact, it sounds really good. My only gripe is that the DSi came out less than a year ago, and now the DSi XL is here, yet the 3DS is supposed to release less than a year from now. It just seems like they are moving a little fast. Still, I managed to get into the DS Lite a few years late in the game and skip the DSi/XL so far, and this model has got me interested at last. It will probably be a big improvement compared to previous DS consoles, so as long as the price isn't too ludicrous, I'll try to get the 3DS. What about you? You know, Nintendo likes to be "different", but all they're doing is catching up to Sony. Sony had 4 versions of the PSP in 5 years, and now this is the 5th version of the DS (in 6 years)? Come on. All these "different" DS's are getting annoying. Start something new. These supposed handhelds are getting too big. The 3DS is (insert number because I can't remember)% bigger then previous DS's. My DS Lite barely fits in my jean pockets as it is! I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, I mean, if it brings in money to Nintendo, then I guess it can't be all bad, can it? Personally, I won't be buying it. |

![]() Thanks to E3, yesterday the new Nintendo 3DS was officially revealed! See here for more details. The top screen is a widescreen LCD display that will produce the 3D effect in games, which can be adjusted with a Depth Slider and still won't require any special glasses. There is a new "Slide Pad" feature to the controls, plus an accelerometer and a gyroscope sensor. Two outer cameras let you take pictures and movies in 3D, and filmmaking companies have signed to release full-length pictures on the 3DS. On top of all that, the regular DS graphics have been highly upgraded. One of its launch titles is scheduled to be Kid Icarus: Uprising, and other announced games included 3D remakes of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, and Paper Mario. It looks like it will be amazing, other than the fact that Iwata and Reggie turned around and ended the presentation without sharing the release date or price. Still, the handheld is everything I had hoped for and more -- definitely something to look forward to. I would do anything to get my hands on it! Edited by CourageWisdomPower, Jun 16 2010, 10:15 PM.

You know, what happened to making handhelds smaller? DS's keep getting bigger. |
