Today, 3D sci-fi film Avatar sees its release in theaters. Directed by James Cameron (The Terminator, Aliens, Titanic), it was filmed using a new virtual camera technology he invented which allows him to see the special effects on the characters and backgrounds in real time, rather than adding them on the computer later. Steven Speilberg, Peter Jackson, and George Lucas all joined Cameron on the set of Avatar to test the new technology as well, paving the way for it to be a breakthrough in film and effects.
