It had been a week since the Melee fighters had returned to the New Mansion. All 26 original fighters had come back along with the 4 that had been announced at the end of the last games. They had all become fast friends, and together awaited the next tournament, to which they had all been invited; but, along with a new tournament came a new set of rules.

1. All returning fighters must stay in Havshire Hall (otherwise known as the New Mansion)
2. Any damage to the dormitories will have consequences (use of fire is included)
3. All new fighters must remain in Darkhall Manor (otherwise known as the Old Mansion)
4. There is to be NO communication with new fighters until after the tournament. Any fighters seen communicating will be liable for being sent home.


Nobody really was concerned with the rules. The four newcomers currently staying in the New Mansion were allowed to stay. But it was the mere fact that there were new fighters that had the Smashers talking. As they sat down to eat dinner, the intercom buzzed to life.
"Attention! Important announcements directly following supper. In the auditorium. Attendance is mandatory." A short click ended Masterhand's speech.

"Now, I know you all are curious regarding the tournament, so I will explain this once, and only once.
"Each of you has received an invitation to come. Some of you, I regret to say, will not be included in the matches." A few gasps were heard in the audience. "Not to worry, there will be a special tournament for those not in our Brawl tournament.
"Now, new fighters will be coming. You are never, ever to speak with them. Believe me, this is for both your benefit and theirs. Now, the tournaments will begin in 3 1/2 months. This will give the newcomers time to all arrive and get situated. Any questions?" he finished.
"Can you go over that again?" Ganondorf asked just to be bothersome.
"No, Masterhand." Samus shot a glare in his direction.
"Good. Assembly dismissed."

Six weeks passed the way they always had - with training, learning, and spending unusually large amounts of time in recreation. The teen and children Smashers had been signed up in a correspondence school to 'make good use of their free time', but they still managed to find time to do absolutely nothing. Like, Zelda was right now. She sat swinging alone on the right porch swing. Lost in thought, she hardly noticed Snake sitting down beside her. They sat for a while watching the Old Mansion. Through the windows, the moving shapes of a practice battle were visible.
"They're coming so often now." Zelda said blankly.
Snake turned to her. "You're not...scared are you? Scared they might be far better than us?" he teased.
"No" she smiled. "I actually feel a bit sorry for them. They're locked up in there not even allowed to come out in the sunshine....and for what?"
"I should be locked up in there right along with them...I'm new too, you know." he said quietly. Zelda took his hand playfully.
"Oh, James. Who would I keep secrets with then?" she giggled. Suddenly, a small figure caught their attention. They stopped and looked over at a boy around the age of fifteen standing in front of the door to the Old Mansion. The dark-haired boy put down his two bags, stepped timidly up to the door, and knocked.
No answer.
Afraid to knock again, the boy backed away and patiently waited. He glanced to the right, but saw only cornfields. The taxi was long gone down the winding road back to Kalline City. He glanced to the left to see the duo rocking slowly on the porch swing. Nervously, he lifted one hand and slowly waved. Zelda smiled brightly and waved back. Acting upon impulse, the boy walked toward the porch.
"Zelda, no communication..." Snake whispered to her.
"Snake, who's to say he's not a lost salesman? And since when do any of us care about the rules anyway?" By this time the boy was nearly to the porch.
"Um...hi..." he almost asked the greeting.
"Hello." she said back. Snake glanced nervously to the front door.
"I'm Ryan." he offered his hand.
"My name is Zelda." she shook it.
"Um...is that the Darkhall Manor? Because it says her" he pointed to a letter "that I need to go to 'Darkhall Manor: Room 17'. But, I knocked on the door, and nobody answered." Ryan fidgeted with the paper in his hand.
"Yo, Z, might want to hurry it up. I have a visual on Luigi."
"yes, yes, I'll come see what's going on." She walked with him to the mansion fifteen feet to the right and knocked. No response. "Hello?" she knocked again. Then she sighed, and pulled out a key. Unlocking the door, she led the boy up a flight of stairs and to a door on the left half of the second floor. How does she know her way around? Has she been here before?" Seemingly reading his thoughts, she quickly answered "I used to live here." They soon reached a room with an unmarked door and entered it. Ryan glanced in the room and saw only a black floor and a medium-sized hole in the wall. Before he could see any more, Zelda slammed the door shut, grabbed his hand, and marched back down the stairs, out the door, across the small lawn, and onto the porch where they'd met only 10 minutes before. One move of her hand silenced Snake's objections. Through the doors and past the staring eyes she dragged Ryan, who was quite confused at the moment. Up a flight of stairs, and to a set of dark double doors, she pulled him.
She knocked on the door. A large, booming voice spoke: "Come in!" Once inside, Zelda began on her side of the case.
"Why is he in room 17?"
"Because it's a perfectly fine room-"
"Well, actually, it's not suitable to live in."
"Reason?"
"Do you remember the ghosts in Roy's old room?"
"Unproven." he retorted.
"Unproven or not, there is a 4-foot hole in the wall and black paint all over the carpet."
"What does that have to do with the ghosts?"
"He thought it would get rid of them."
"Why?"
"He's Roy."
"Good point..." Masterhand responded thoughtfully.
"At any rate, rooms 15-19 need renovation." Zelda finished. Ryan followed the conversation without actually understanding any of it. The long silence put his nerves to work.
"You've been practicing your arguments. Good job, Zel."
"Thank you." she smiled.
"Ryan," Finally, the address the subject of discussion. the boy thought. Masterhand continued "you will stay in Room 17 of this mansion. Be sure to unpack quickly." the duo turned to leave the room. Ryan was out the door when it suddenly closed. "Zelda, you disobeyed my one rule. I gave one rule that absolutely had to be obeyed and you broke it."
"Masterhand, I showed him kindness. Please, don't get mad at him. Can't he stay here and just be considered a veteran like Ja-Snake and Pit?"
"One will bring many..." he advised.
"Do you wish me to return home?" she asked quietly.
Masterhand paused. "Ryan will be needing your help. Goodness knows he'd never figure out this place on his own." Zelda brightened.
"Thank you!"

Dinner that night was exciting. A chair had been squeezed in between Peach and Jigglypuff for Ryan. Chatter was lively, but Ryan wasn't the only one not talking. Ness, too was quiet. The boy didn't have many friends. Young Link was nice, but compared to normal children he was a whiny little obsessive brat who was to goody-goody to be any fun. And Popo was what, five? Ness sighed. "Ganondorf, can you pass the milk?" The boy's request went unheard. "Ganon, pass the milk." Still no response. Working up a small energy ball, he threw it in the gerudo's direction. It bounced off the veggie bowl and directly crashed into Fox's drink, knocking it into Samus's lap.
"You did not!" she looked at Roy, sitting across from her.
"I-" a squirt of catsup silenced his words and made his face a reflection of his hair. Samus's laugh echoed along with the others'.
"Oh, Sam. I hope you like" he reached for the nearest item of food. "um...Peach's green stuff." Missing by a mile, the spinach casserole hit Zelda in the head. The princess silenced Link's laughs by putting mushroom soup in his hair. Before long, everybody, Ryan included, was pelting (and being pelted by) noodles, turkey, soup, and about 23 other edible materials.

"So, is dinner always so...interesting?" Ryan chuckled.
"Pretty much." Zelda smiled. "Well, here's 17." she stopped by a door on the third floor of the mansion, which belonged solely to the teens. "I'm in 21, just across the atrium." she pointed to a room directly opposite the large, circular opening. "So, if you need anything, just knock. Also, be up by 9:00 for breakfast. Good night." with that, she skipped off to the girls' room.
"9...okay." Ryan closed the door behind him.

Marth sat alone on a stone bench in the garden. "Hey," Peach said softly. "Mind if I sit?"
"Oh, no, of course you can." he scooted over to make room for the princess.
"You never talk much about your home" she stopped "or anybody there..."
"Did Samus tell you to ask me questions?" Peach smiled ruefully.
"I was simply curious."
"Well, I could sum it up simply. I live in a grand castle filled with people, but I've only ever had one true friend. Before I came here, at any rate." He stopped to smile, a habit he had only just begun to practice. "Speaking of Roy, here he comes." he pointed to the seventeen year old swordsman running up to them.
"Glad to find you two! Wait, am I...interrupting something?" Roy clasped his hands behind his back like a child, and gave one of his trademark grins.
"Roy, did you come for something or didn't you?" Marth sighed.
"Actually, yes. We all have a team practice battle."
"Who's in fourth position?" Peach inquired.
"Um...the Polka Man's trainer...?" Roy said curiously.

The three arrived at the practice room (a large emerald green gymnasium with a blue-ish green practice stage) and spread out into their start positions. A few moments later, Ryan stepped onto the glowing platform labeled "4".
"Wait, wait, wait." Roy looked the other fighter over. "You teach polka?"
"Huh?" Ryan looked at him with a mix of suspicion and puzzlement.
"Let's just go." Marth interrupted. The match began, and Ryan stepped back. He reached into his gray messenger bag and produced a Pokeball which he threw onto the stage; instantly, Squirtle popped out.
"Oh." Roy paused. "I get it." He chuckled to himself as he countered one of Peach's rogue turnips. A blast from Squirtle sent him falling to the ground.
"Back!" Ryan called, and obediently, Squirtle returned to the Pokeball. Reaching back into the bag, Ryan set out Charizard.
"Ah, fire. Fight fire with fire." Roy muttered as he leapt forward and struck the dragon with the flat of his blade. Just as Marth was about to catapult Peach from the platform, a holler echoed through the mansion.
"Ness, where are you?! Come back!!" Young Link's voice wailed.
"the attic" the three veterans said in unison.
"The attic?" Ryan asked as they darted from the arena. "There's an attic?"

They all arrived to the scene at once. Young Link hung duct-taped to the wall - upside down. The poor boy was close to tears. "Can somebody help me? Please?" As the two swordsmen began to cut the tape, Peach knelt beside the blond boy.
"Who did this?"
"Ness."
"When?"
"About two hours ago. I finally got the tape off my mouth." Peach almost asked how, but with a thud Young Link was lying face down on the floor. "I can't feel my fingers."
"We should get you to Doc. You know, to make sure you can keep your fingers." Roy explained. The others agreed. They made their way down the stairs, completely forgetting the boy in the attic. Young Link flopped onto his back and managed to sit up.
"Great. I can't feel my toes either." he sighed, then glanced around. "A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N. O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Zed. Peter Peter pumpkin eater..."

Ness was hiding in the bushes. Young Link was free and would tell on him, so he had to hide for a little while. He sat on a rock and thought. He thought a while longer. And some more. Finally, a car pulled up to the Old Mansion. This caught his attention. Out stepped none other than Lucas Robertson. Ness's mouth gaped. Why him?
Glancing his way, Lucas caught sight of his schoolmate. "Ness? What a surprise!" he walked up to him. "Has it really been since the middle school graduation?"
"Um, I didn't go to that."
"Oh?"
"I didn't - uh - graduate." Ness said, squeezing himself against the side of the house.
"Oh, I forgot" Lucas said, embarrassed. "I kinda skipped two grades."
"I know."
"So, I've graduated now. For good."
"How lovely for you." Ness responded dryly.
"Well, I must go and unpack my belongings. I'll be seeing you!" the blond boy skipped to the other mansion.
"We can look forward to that, can't we?" Ness muttered as he emerged from hiding. Hopefully nobody saw him breaking the rules. But, Mewtwo saw. Mewtwo heard every word of the conversation. And of this, Ness was certain.

A knock was heard at Mewtwo's door. He rose to answer it. "Hi!" Ness said brightly. The door shut.
"Go away, Ness"
"Look, I know you saw."
"And?"
"You can't tell Masterhand."
"Since when do I listen to you?"
"Since, I know all your little secrets." Ness lied.
Mewtwo chuckled to himself. "Oh, do you?"
"Yes, and I'll tell them to every single one of the city newspapers." Ness said, gaining courage.
"Okay, boy, I'll play your little game. May the smartest one win...eighth grader."
Ness stood a little embarrassed for a moment before turning to leave. "Intimidation. That's all."

It was early afternoon when another soft knock came on Mewtwo's door. He opened it to see a young girl with long, dark brown hair. "Mewtwo, can I talk to you?" Nana asked. The Pokemon stepped aside to let her in.
"What seems to be the problem?" Mewtwo asked, closing the door behind him.
"Well," Nana found and open spot on one of the two beds and sat down. "Young Link." Mewtwo cleared a space on the opposite bed and sat. He hadn't known of this. Of course, he never bothered to see what the twin eskimos thought about.
"I like Zelda, and she and Link are so perfect for eachother. But, Link and Young Link are separate people, right?"
"I suppose..." Mewtwo pondered.
"So, maybe Young Link won't end up with Young Zelda.....maybe he could like...me." she stuttered the last words quietly. "You can help me, right?"
"I can send him subliminal messages. Dreams?" he offered.
"Well, something more foolproof. Something tangible or..."
"You want a love potion?" Mewtwo asked, surprised. Nana's face lit up.
"Yes! I mean, if you don't mind too much..."
"Well, I've never made one for an eleven year old" Nana's smile faded a bit. "but I could try."
"Oh, thank you!" she gave him a hug, which Mewtwo awkwardly returned.
"Be up here right after dinner. I'll give you instructions." He stood. She ran to the door, then turned back.
"Thanks!" she waved, and then left. Mewtwo chuckled audibly.
"Cute kid" he said as he pulled out a volume entitled Benevolent Potions.

Meanwhile, Ness was cornered in his room by his newcomer-friend.
"So, I'm thinking maybe medical school would be a good choice-"
"Lucas!!"
"Yes?"
"You aren't allowed to talk to me!"
"What do you mean?"
"You're new, I'm not, and by talking to me, you could get us both kicked out!" Ness had found the escape route.
"Oh...I wasn't aware..."
"All veterans, and Ryan, assemble in the auditorium prior to supper." the intercom clicked off.
"Wait here, and don't answer the door." Ness ordered.
"What if it's you?" Lucas asked confusedly.
"I have a key." Ness rolled his eyes and shut the door. He returned to the room fifteen minutes later with new knowledge. Falcon had ratted him out, so MasterHand removed the fourth rule. Now there was no escape from Mr. Know-it-all. Or was there? He unlocked the door.
"Lucas, you aren't cool." he began.
"Wh-what?"
"To be honest, you're far from it."
"B-but I have mind powers! And I'm friends with you!"
Ness cringed. "Not good enough. I can make you cool, however. But, I need a few things..."

"Stay here until I come back." Ness ordered. He and Lucas stood in Mewtwo's messy room-and-laboratory while dinner was beginning.
"How long will that be?" Lucas glanced nervously around.
"Ten or fifteen minutes." Ness turned to leave.
"What if Mewtwo comes back and finds me?"
"He won't." Ness turned back to leave.
"What am I looking for?" Lucas asked again.
"I already told you! Anything that looks important!" Annoyed, he threw open the door and ran out.
"Okay, okay." Lucas muttered and looked through stacks of paper. He picked up a few suspicious items: an orange pen, a penny whistle, and a book of fairy tales. Lucas turned to a table with potions and notebooks covering it. In a small vial was a liquid of deep violet color. A scrap of paper taped to the front read:

FOR THE YOUNG BLONDE BOY. GIVE TONIGHT.

"Young blond boy..." Lucas muttered. He thought of the people he'd met so far. "Ness and Papo are the only kids I've seen..." What if it was poison? He checked the surroundings. The bottle sat atop a book entitled Benevolent Potions: The Third Edition. "Must be safe" Lucas said before swallowing the liquid. The world swirled into darkness around him as he slumped to the floor.

Zelda was on her way to the ice room when she noticed Mewtwo's door was open slightly. Stepping in, she saw Lucas lying on the floor.
"Are you alright?" she asked. Instantly, he sat upright. An expression of pure adoration spread across the boy's face. Zelda backed away slowly.
"You're pretty! I think I love you!" he spoke in a monotone. Zelda turned and ran from the room. Lucas ran after her. "Wait! Why must you go?"

Mewtwo sighed as he took one glance at his desk. Lucas had drunk the potion. The boy didn't know Mewtwo knew, but Mewtwo saw and heard everything that went on inside the mansion.
"What's wrong?" Nana asked the Pokemon.
"Your potion fell into the wrong hands."
"Oh.." the girl thought about that for a moment.
"See why I prefer dreams? What if it had been a harmful, no, deadly potion?"
"I'm sorry, Mewtwo..I just..." Nana whimpered.
"It's okay. But, you have to help me cure that boy. Until we make a counteracting remedy, I pity the good Princess."

It was a little after midnight when Zelda stopped in the library to catch her breath. Lucas was faster than she'd expected. She sat on the sofa in the dark and quiet room. She stilled her breathing to hear if he was still following her.
"Who are you hiding from?" Snake asked from under his box. Zelda gasped, and nearly jumped.
"I'm not...hiding." she said quietly. Suddenly she heard footsteps in the hall.
"Where are you, dearest?" Lucas's muffled voice asked. Zelda instinctively flipped over the back of the sofa and landed by Snake's box.
"Still not hiding?" he asked playfully. Zelda giggled. "Why a thirteen year old boy anyway?" Zelda caught her breath.
"In a word-Mewtwo" Lucas flung the door open and dashed into the room heroically. He turned to one of the chairs and glanced behind it. He returned to the center of the room. The boy stood for a few moments with his back to the door. In the blink of an eye, the door was opened and the kid was tackled by Nana. Zelda and Snake peeked over the couch to see Nana holding down Lucas by his feet and arms as Mewtwo shoved an orange liquid down the boy's throat. Lucas attempted to scream for his life, but all that came out was a gargle. The duo hiding behind the sofa sat back and tried not to laugh. This was definitely going to be quite the tournament.

Sonic chuckled to himself as he ran at top-speed away from the mansion. He had successively stolen the journal from under that girl's nose! Finding a shallow cave, he darted in and sat down to read it.
"Huh?" he asked confusedly. All the words were in a completely different language of slanted and curved lines.

"The blond one says he stole something." Roy said, beaming. Zelda looked back and forth from Ness to Lucas. Zelda's diary had gone missing the night before.
"I admit it! I stole the stuff!" Lucas pleaded. Ness smacked the boy on the back of the head.
"no" Zelda said slowly "it was somebody blue. I saw a blue thing..."
"Is this your thing?" Ganondorf asked. In his hand he held a blue hedgehog in red running shoes. The hedgehog was too short to reach the floor. "Fastest thing alive, eh?" he chuckled.
"At least I don't have an ugly tattoo on my face." Sonic muttered.
"It's not a tattoo!" Ganondorf shouted.
"He's right-it's natural." Roy whispered.
"Boys, please" Zelda interjected. "Yes, that's him. Sonic, right?"
"Yeah"
"Can I please have my diary back?" Sonic handed over the brown book and Zelda tucked it away somewhere in her skirts. "No more stealing, okay?"
"Alright."
"Ganon, let him go." The Gerudo lowered the creature who quickly sped off. Sonic snickered to himself as he fingered Ganondorf's wallet in his hands.

Marth was sitting in the garden reading MacBeth when a familiar voice came to his ears.
"Prince Marth?" Ike was one of Marth's commanders from the Altean army.
"Ike! What a pleasant surprise!" Liar. "I was hoping you would receive an invitation." Liar.
"Why are you here?" Ike asked curiously.
"I'm a veteran fighter." he emphasized the word veteran.
"Marth!" Samus called. "I want you to meet - oh, it looks like you already have." she giggled.
"I have to go" Marth stood and ran inside. Upon reaching the solitude of the library, he let himself slip away into his memories.

"Why are you sad?" Zelda asked Marth from across the narrow aisle. They both sat, backs against the ends of bookshelves. The aisle was so narrow that their toes nearly touched as they sat bent-legged each reading a Shakespeare.
"I'm not sure what you mean." he sighed. Zelda had a way of knowing what was going through your mind. But, not in the weird way - more of the motherly 'I'm there for you' sort of way. Her eyes held no judgment for his silence. "It's Ike."
"Why do you fear him?"
"Fear? I-" he stopped short seeing the look she gave him. He sighed. "He took my everything from me the last time. And I don't want that to happen again."
"What was her name?"
"Karina. I thought she was the world. I gave her all I had, but...Ike was handsome and always there, and...better. But, that's not all he managed to take. He was always a big military genius. My father thought of him as a second son...he said I had alot I could learn from Ike...and all my life I've been told he would've been able to save my father. I-" he faltered. Zelda placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"Maybe you should give him a second chance."

Marth walked into the teen lounge. Pit, Roy, Samus, and Ike were sitting on the floor playing cards. Marth attempted to turn and leave, but Zelda pushed him back in.
"Can we play with you guys?" the princess asked cheerily.
"Um, well, we started the series already. But I think Pichu is looking for partners." Pit explained slowly. Everybody knew the only fun part of playing Bonko was the table talk, and that wasn't exactly exciting when your partner was Pichu.
"I thought I was in tonight's series." Marth interjected.
"Ike took your place. Just for tonight." Roy smiled. Marth shook his head, and pushed past Zelda and out the sliding glass doors.

Dinner wasn't much of an improvement on the evening. Marth couldn't concentrate on the lively chatter. Roy's words were echoing in his mind. "Ike took your place." Not again. "Isn't that right?" Roy asked Marth. "Hey, Ike, Samus wanted to know if you have a girlfriend." Samus shot Roy a what are you thinking type of look. Marth spit back his Coke. Ike just laughed.
"Actually, no." Marth rolled his eyes and left the table.
"Marth, wait!" Zelda called after him.
"Z, I just can't do this again." he ran up the stairs to his room.

"Why are we doing this?" Lucas asked his schoolmate.
"Because. Peach told us to put this in. It makes hair softer."
"It's blue dye." Lucas said dryly.
"No, it's an...old bottle. Just put it in."
"Whatever." Lucas sighed as he squeezed the contents of the bottle into Peach's shampoo.

The princess's shriek echoed all the way to the kitchen. Peach stood in the bathroom, her newly dyed blue hair dripping. To make matters worse, somebody had taken her tiara and her dress.
She felt exposed five minutes later when she arrived downstairs wearing one of Samus's "smaller" suits. The bounty hunter assured her that she looked fine, but Peach felt like she'd stepped out of a Star Wars scene. They were late to breakfast, but a few stragglers were still seated in the dining room. Peach sat down in her usual spot opposite Roy.
"Wow, Peach-"
"Don't you even say it!" Peach cut off whatever remark he was about to say.
"Nice outfit. Very...interesting." he teased and broke into laughs.
"If you're the one who took my dress, I'll-"
"Now, now, why on earth would I do that?" Roy smiled mischievously and handed her the fruit bowl. "Honestly though, I wouldn't do that to you...probably." he chuckled.

Sonic sat back in his chair in the library. Ebuy had a few new listings. Peach's dress, and her crown. 'REAL DIAMONDS - A REAL PRINCESS'S DRESS' were in big, red letters on the screen. This wasn't really for the money; it was just fun to mess the whole mansion up and see how things went after that. Something inside told him he was going to get caught. But that was fine, because by the time they caught him, he'd have sold off half the mansion.

Zelda was sitting in the arcade with Ryan. She had been assigned the task of explaining everything to him. "Never trust a ninja."
"So, I'm not supposed to trust Sheik?"
"Yes, you do trust her."
"But you just said-"
"No. Sheikah are people of their word; always trust them."
"Okay?" the confused trainer said.
"This is so boring." Young Link interrupted. "Lucas, wanna go play in the attic?"
"Sure!" So the duo skipped up to the attic and left Ryan and Zelda to discuss matters of trust.

That evening was Friday. Fridays were off days for the Smashers. They were allowed to go into town for supper, which many usually did. Tonight, Marth and Samus had been planning to go to a jazz concert in the park. He knocked on her door. She answered, dressed in a black dress with a lace neckline and a ruby choker. Her hair was pulled up with black chopsticks.
"Wow. You look beautiful tonight!" the prince smiled. "Ready to go?"
"Go where?" she asked confusedly.
"To the concert."
"Oh, that was tonight? Um, I'm sorry, Marth. I kinda promised that I'd go to dinner with Ike."
"I figured..." he said disappointedly. "Have fun" he gave her the tickets and headed to his room.

Roy gently closed the door to his room. He suspiciously eyed his roommate who was lying on the opposite bed facing the window.
"Y'know, I don't get what you have against him." Roy began.
"It's not your business to know."
"I mean, he's your commander. I thought you two were best friends."
"Well, we're not." Marth responded flatly.
"But, I thought you two were like brothers. Your father treated you both like sons..."
"Shut up, Roy!!" he yelled with more force than he wanted.
"Fine. Live your life however you want. Forgive me for trying to help, Prince Mopey." Roy muttered under his breath. "I'm taking a shower." he said as he glared holes through his roommate's messy blue hair.
"Whatever." Marth mumbled. Roy rolled his eyes and headed for the little bathroom.

"Bleep bleep bleep!" Game & Watch...er...bleeped.
"What is it?" Captain Falcon responded. Understanding what Game & Watch said came with time. Most of the veteran smashers understood perfectly well all the things their two-dimensional friend said.
"Bleep bleep bleep blip-blop."
"Break the sound barrier?!"
"Bleep! Blip?"
"Of course I'll help you. But, how does a shadow go about breaking the sound barrier?" Game & Watch pulled out one of Peach's turnips. "Huh?" the racer asked.

Ike awoke with a start at 7:30. Somebody was pounding on the door. He opened it to see Marth, perfectly dressed and ready, standing at the door.
"You win." came Marth's steady voice.
"Win? Win what?" Ike was confused.
"The game. My life. Everything."
"I don't think I understand-"
"Take my friends. You already have them anyway. Why not my country? Father always said you were a better ruler than I. And you know what? You can have Samus too. I used to think the world of her, but she obviously doesn't think the same. So, you win - at the game I didn't ever wish to play."
Ike just stood there looking a little stunned, still partially trying to understand the prince's hurried speech. By the time he'd formulated a response of sorts, Marth was gone.

"So, what's the weirdest thought that's ever crossed your mine?" Lucas asked his new friend as they sat tinkering with an old radio in the attic.
"Well, I had this dream last night where I was skipping through a field of flowers - with Nana."
"Oooh, sounds like you like her." Lucas teased.
"I don't think so. I had the same dream about a chicken once." They both laughed. "Hey, can I borrow that wrench?"

25 Down, Still 4 Across....

Ganondorf found Marth later that morning sitting alone in the observatory. He sat down beside the younger fighter.
"If you're going to tell me I need to get over it-"
"No, I think you're right. It's not right of him to come and try to take over your friends, but it's not right of your friends to be so interested in him that they disregard you. Samus, either." The gerudo said the last sentence gently.
"I-I feel like I'm losing her just like I lost Karina." Marth admitted.
"Marth, have you so quickly forgotten the rules?"
"What rules?" Marth asked slowly.
"The rules! This house was built by magic, by magic it is maintained. Nothing inside this house is real, including our own thoughts and feelings. Every thing set in stone can change in a moment, and the falsest feelings become a reality." he paused. "Just look at Roy and Peach. Their relationship is so flimsy on the outside, but to them I'm sure it's the realest thing in the world! We all know she'll marry that plumber the second she gets home." They both laughed softly. "If I know that girl of yours at all, she'll be coming back to you soon enough." Ganondorf finished.
"You're probably right." the prince rose to leave. He turned when he reached the door. "Thanks, Ganon." He gave a small smile and left.
"Good kid, he's good kid." Ganondorf said to himself.


"What is wrong with you?!" Falco asked Sonic. The hedgehog couldn't sit still for five minutes!
"Uh...caffeine" Sonic said.
"Uh-huh..." Falco replied suspiciously. "Have you ever considered decaf?"
"Nope. Gotta go." Sonic darted off without another word, leaving his cards where they were.
"Weirdo" Falco muttered. He peeked at Sonic's hand of cards. "Hey, Pikachu! Wanna finish his hand?"

Link and Samus were lying under an old oak tree on a little knoll just far enough from the mansion to not be heard. Samus and Link had been close friends since the first tournament; each was to the other the sibling they'd never had. They had come out to enjoy the fresh air and watch the overpassing clouds.
"So," Link began. "Are you going to tell me? or not?"
"Geez, Link, it's not like it was some hot date or something." Samus said defensively. Link just laughed.
"I was actually referring to what dessert you made for supper, but I like your answer better." Samus remained quiet. "So?"
"Can't we just watch the clouds for the sake of watching clouds?" the bounty hunter sighed. Silence enclosed them for a short while before Link broke it.
"I see a unicorn" the boy pointed to a formation of clouds.
"No, that looks more like a-" she paused. What did it look like? "blob of Peach's mashed potatoes." Both teens laughed. Peach was known for her poor cooking skills in the area of salty foods. "What does that one look like?" Samus pointed to a small, rectangular cloud.
"A turnip?" Link sat up and rubbed his head where the white vegetable had just crash-landed.
"That's not a tu-ow" another one came soaring over and hit Samus. "Who's throwing turnips?" she yelled in the direction of the mansion.
"Sorry." Captain Falcon's voice drifted faintly from the roof.
"Loser." she muttered. "Hey, I think I might go into town for a while before dinner. Want to come along?" Samus asked as she pushed herself up to her feet.
"Sure. Let's ask Marth to come too." Link said as he sidestepped yet another flying turnip.

Luigi found himself in the arcade that morning on his computer. For the past two hours, he had been playing - and winning - Galactic Minesweeper.
Click. Click. Flag. Click. The cheesy victory song played. Luigi glanced around to stretch his neck. He was startled to see Sonic standing right next to him - so startled that he fell out of the short black chair he had been sitting in.
"Can I use your computer?" Sonic asked, not even offering to help the plumber up.
"No."
"Please?"
"No." An idea came to Sonic.
"Okay. The reason I asked is because - well, you see, my mother is very sick. I need to email the doctor and tell him I sent the money for her surgery." he sniffled. "I don't have my own computer because I'm a newcomer, and if he doesn't know the money is coming, he won't operate, and if he doesn't operate, then she won't be able to have her surgery, and if she doesn't have her surgery, then this could be her last week to live...." he made his voice sound sad and suppressed the urge to laugh.
"You can use it" Luigi said with his eyes full of tears.
"Thank you." Sonic said softly. He waited until Luigi was out of the arcade. Then the hedgehog pulled a CD out of his pocket and slipped it into the laptop.
"System is corrupted. Now destructing hard drive."
"Yes!" Sonic exclaimed quietly. "Oh-" he quickly pressed F2 and Shift.
"Now sending to wireless network."
"Awesome." Sonic grinned.

"Blee-blipsy"
"Yes! Propulsion is precisely what we need!" Captain Falcon concluded. "I think there are some electrical hookups in the basement."

King Dedede took one step inside the manor and his mouth dropped open. A squeak emitted. Sitting above every end table in sight (and mind you there were 27 end tables within the New Mansion alone) was a full-length portrait of some odd character from a children's nursery rhyme. Did they not know that portraits of people could be easily possessed for evil intent? At least, such had been his experience in Dreamland. This place was a deathtrap just waiting to happen! Running up to the first portrait in sight, he proceeded to withdraw his hammer and smash it to bits. Now for the rest of them.

In the basement, the turnip duo had a hard time trying to find the cord hookups. Game and Watch headed for the circuit box.
"Bleepa?"
"GW! No!!" Too late. The shadow had already shoved a turnip into the metal box. With a flicker, the lights in the entire mansion went out. "Great. Just, great."

"Oh, now what?" an annoyed Ganondorf asked as the lights flickered out. He glanced up from his book to see nothing but darkness.
Smash. Another portrait fell to the floor. 'How could the King-thing see in this dark?' Ganondorf wondered.
Smash. Smash. Thunk.
"Ow!" Nana screamed.
"S-sorry" Dedede stuttered. Thunk! A loud thud was heard. Nana chuckled at her victory over the large bird. Ganondorf just smiled. This was why he loved these tournaments. Behind him he heard two people falling down the staircase. Young Link moaned. Lucas helped the other boy to his feet.
"Boy, it's dark in here." Lucas ran to the nearest end table and lit a candle he'd found in the way he'd learned in Ranger Scouts.
"Lucas" Young Link whined.
"Okay, what is going on?" Roy stumbled onto the landing and down the stairs. "Who shut off the lights? I was working on my school, with a pen in my hand and everything." the boy complained.
"You could've hurt yourself." Ganondorf mocked concern.
"What did you mean by that?" Roy demanded. With his words, the den fireplace sprang to life and the candles Lucas had been lighting grew proportionately brighter.
"Not again" Young Link mumbled.
"Well, I know I wouldn't trust you with anything remotely sharp..." Ganondorf continued.
"Excuse me?! And I'm the one with the sword here!" The flames grew even brighter. Nana, who had moved too close to one of the tables, had her hair catch on fire.
"Help! Help!" she screamed. Young Link ran to the kitchen and returned with the water pitcher. He dumped it on her.
"No candles." Young Link said, annoyed. "Roy here is too dangerous with fire."
"I'm sorry, I can't help it.." Roy lowered his head, ashamed of his quick temper. With his movement the candles dimmed. Young Link turned back to Nana who was lying on the floor in the middle of stop, drop, and roll.
"You okay?" He knelt down beside her. Part of her long, brown hair was singed to ear-length. She nodded slowly.
"but, my hair..."
"Come with me." He grabbed her hand and helped her up. "I can fix it for you." He smiled and led her carefully up the first flight of stairs.

"Are you sure about this?" Nana asked for at least the ninth time. She sat on a chair in Young Link and Pichu's shared bathroom. A flashlight was propped up against the sink and Young Link stood behind her, scissors in hand, ready to fix her hair.
"Of course! I do Zelda's hair all the time! Now, you have to hold still..."

"I got-a the generator-a running." Mario called from the basement. "But, uh, its only-a running down here."
"Then down there we shall go!" Falco said cheerily. He loved little adventures like this.

"Who are we missing?" Peach asked as she was squished between Sonic and Doctor Mario.
"Samus, Link, and Marth." Mewtwo answered without a second thought.
"They won't be back for a while." she responded. All of the Smashers with the exception of a few newcomers still in the Old Mansion were packed in the basement. "Who else?"
"Snake, Young Link, Nana too." As if on cue, the two younger fighters descended the stairs hand-in-hand. Nana's hair was slightly above ear-length and flared out at the ends. Her right eye was partially covered by stylishly jagged bangs.
"Wow, Nana, you look great! Link, you should be a hair stylist." Peach giggled.
"Thanks" both children said it unison. Glancing down tat their hands, Young Link blushed and let go. The silence settled in awkwardly. Roy did what he did best to break the silence.
"I think the voices in my head are throwing a disco party." the redhead smiled and Falco started laughing, which actually was quite a humorous sound in itself.
"Sh." Sheik put a hand to her lips. "Someone's at the door." she said softly in her thick accent.

Ryan knocked at the door again. It wasn't locked, so he opened it and stepped in. "Hello?" no answer. "Is anybody here?" He asked. A young blond boy followed close behind the Pokemon trainer.
"They're in the basement." Snake said. He was sitting in the corner staring at the ceiling. "I'm only up here so I can use my nightvision goggles for once."
"Okay then..." Ryan responded slowly.
"Who's this?" Snake motioned to the boy behind Ryan.
"I found him outside. His name is Link." the shy boy stepped forward and looked intently at a spot on the floor.
"Another one?" Snake asked surprised. At this, the newcomer glanced up.

The front door opened and MasterHand floated in, followed by the three teens who had gone into town. "What is going on here?" he asked.
"Falcon did it!" Snake said quickly. Within ten minutes, the lights had returned to the mansion. Now a dilemma was in the making about the new Link. They boy stared uncertainly at Link and Young Link. His eyes stopped on Zelda, who had mysteriously appeared from nowhere. He stumbled around for something to say. He'd never been more confused than he was right now!
"...so we'll call you Cell, okay?" Popo finished. The newcomer hadn't even noticed the other boy was speaking.
"The legend of Cellda" Fox whispered to Samus, causing her to let out a single laugh.
"No, Celink. It's better." Lucas said.
"Um, okay" Celink said slowly.
"Settled then!" MasterHand finished. "Sheik," at the sound of her name, she appeared out of nowhere, hoping that nobody realized Zelda's absence. "Show him around. Teach him about this place. You know it better than anyone else."
"Yes, sir." the ninja responded. "We'll begin tomorrow."

The next afternoon, Celink had asked if he could please be excused to get some rest - he had been learning alot for never having been outside his home realm. Sheik had allowed him to, also glad for a break. She headed up to the teen lounge where Samus, Marth, Roy, Ike, Pit, and Link were all sitting. Samus, Link, and Pit occupied one sofa; Ike sat in one chair; Sheik sat in the opposite chair; and Roy and Marth sat on the floor. Some were playing cards, others reading, others listening to music through headphones. Roy, however, was scribbling on a piece of grid paper.
"What are you writing?" Samus asked, removing her headphones.
"Oh, I'm doing that stupid creative writing project." he sighed. "Why do we even have to do any school at all?"
"Well, be glad it's correspondence this year."
"I liked going to the high school better." he mumbled as he erased another word.
"So, what are you writing anyway?" Samus asked again.
"Oh, well, I have to make a crossword about a topic I am familiar with. The 'down' must compare and contrast with the 'across'. I just have no idea what to write it on."
"Us." Marth interjected, eyes not leaving his book. It suddenly dawned on Roy exactly what his friend meant.
"Twenty-five down!" Roy exclaimed. "And for every newcomer we face, I'll make another across!" he smiled brightly. "Thanks, Marth."
"Mmhmm." the blue-haired prince responded, once more absorbed in his book.

After dinner, Roy sat in his and Marth's shared room attempting to finish his algebra homework. This was a hard task, seeing as how Fox and Luigi were listening to music quite loudly in the room directly above his own. Sighing, he headed upstairs. He knocked at the door, algebra notebook still in his right hand.
"Yes?" Fox answered.
"Can you please turn off the music?" Roy kept his voice calm.
"No." the creature said simply.
"Then can you at least turn it down?"
"No, I won't be able to hear it then!" came Luigi's voice from inside the room.
"Please, just use headphones or something. I can't hear myself think. And I'm trying to complete my-"
"Hey! You started without me!" Wario chuckled as he ran around Roy and into the room. The door slammed as the music grew louder, if that was even possible. Roy sighed again. He walked out through the drizzle and to the nearly-deserted Old Mansion. He opened the door to the attic to see Ryan, seated on the floor with his back against the wall, writing a letter.
"Mind if I sit?" Roy asked quietly. Ryan shook his head. The swordsman slumped down beside the Pokemon Trainer. "Girlfriend?" Roy asked, motioning towards the letter in the other boy's hands.
"Mom." Ryan smiled. "I miss her."
"It's sweet of you to write her." Roy said, smiling slightly.
"Do you write to your parents from here?"
"Nah. My mother died when I was two, and my father and I aren't on speaking terms."
"Why?" Ryan queried.
"Why did she die? Um, I guess it was just part of the greater plan of things..." Roy stuttered awkwardly.
"I meant about your father" Ryan laughed softly.
"Oh. Well, ever since Mother died, he looked to me as his 'trophy'. But, he expects too much of me. He wants me to be just like him; perfect and proper and-" he searched for the right word to convey the feeling "punctual." not the right word, but it worked. "I was born into nobility, but that doesn't make me a Lord. His expectations are just too high for me to meet. We had a fight about it, and haven't spoken since. Does your father ever do that?"
"My father died four years ago."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up." Roy apologized, feeling very embarrassed.
"It's okay. He always told me that you'll never get through life if you keep looking to the past. It helped me get through." Ryan lifted his letter to his lips and gently kissed the top of the page before folding it and putting it into his messenger bag. He stood to leave, but turned back. "But all the same, Roy, cherish what you have. You never know when it'll be gone." Ryan turned once more to the door.
"Hey, Ryan, if you wait for a little while, we can both go to the Post Office. I have a letter I need to write."

Pit exited the practice hall with his head down. He'd just lost another match, this one against the newcomer Olimar. Third lost match in a row. "Beginners' luck." he mumbled. Not that he needed to mumble - the angel was naturally so soft-spoken that many of his comments went unheard among the tumultuous group of Smashers he called friends. Lately, they hadn't been very good friends in his eyes. He'd seen the way they'd treated Marth once Ike showed up, and now that he'd been losing practice matches, they'd started ignoring him too. If they weren't around the newcomers, they were fine, but once the new fighters starting spending more and more time with the veterans, the teen floor had pretty much become and exclusive club, excluding even some of it's previous members. All these thoughts were being pondered by the angel as he climbed the stairs to the attic. Once he reached the darkened room, he headed to the one small window that provided the only source of light. Opening it, he crawled out and, grabbing onto a short protruding beam above the window frame, pulled himself to a little nook built into the roof. Nobody knew about the perch except Pit, who often went to the private perch to think.
The spot was his silent refuge where he could go to simply be alone with his thoughts. Pit looked up at the myriad of twinkling stars. The double moons of Kallieren were already high in the sky. Here between the world beneath and the sparkling blanket of sky above was his own little world that nobody could take away. Pit let out a quiet laugh. Not many fifteen-year-olds thought this way. Then again, he had been forced to face the world at an early age, due to the loss of both parents in a great battle when he was only seven years old. He thought for a moment about what little he could remember of them before giving up partially due to the fading of the memories and partially due to the pain of the one memory that haunted his nightmares. Pit cleared his mind and leaned back to watch the glistening stars.
