Heinkel 111H-3

I'm sure many of you are familiar enough with this type to make any sort of potted history superfluous, so I'll skip it. The Revellogram 1/48 He 111H-3 has been around for a while now and although it's always been well regarded, my interest in this new ICM kit was piqued, so I thought I'd check it out. I won't make any comparisons with the Revellogram kit - in any case I don't have one, but I've seen a few built and there's no doubting it's a fine kit.

When my kit arrived, I was slightly disappointed with the flimsy looking lid, but appearances can be deceptive, there's actually a good and strong box under the flimsy lid. The box looks quite small for a large twin in 1/48 and indeed, when you open things up it's stuffed full of plastic. A bit like a Chinese puzzle when you try to put it all back, it doesn't seem to fit. What of the kit itself? The mouldings are high quality, fine panel lines and packed with detail. This is everything that you could possibly wish for in a plastic kit and whilst I'm sure Eduard et al are gearing up for PE and resin accessories there's no reason not to produce a stonking model out of the box, with the only extra bits required being seat harnesses. Of course that doesn't mean to say it wouldn't be worth adding some PE, especially as there's lots of glass to show off the internals. The instructions are nicely printed on good quality paper and include stencil placement and full colour paint guides for four schemes. Without further ado, check out what you get. This is going to be very picture heavy, so I'm going to spread it over four posts.

This is a very impressive release from ICM, they are to be congratulated at producing such a good looking set of components that should result in some outstanding Heinkel models in the coming weeks and months. An ideal kit to have as a centrepiece for any 1/48 collection of Battle of Britain models, although the Norwegian campaign and East Front options are not without interest. I'm sure Luftwaffe fans will love this kit, even if you're not a Luftwaffe fan it's one of those kits that's worth indulging in as a treat. Highly recommended.

My wife gave me this for Christmas and it certainly looks a nice kit. I'll be building it in the not to distant future. I believe they are also bring out the H6 and H16 versions shortly.
