Time to make a start on the thread and hopefully the kit.

The starter set from Janco Toys has arrived so I have the markings
The build will be with just the addition of the Freightdog 5 spoke wheels and maybe a homemade harness if I don't use the pilot.

I will dispense with the usual box and sprue shots if that is okay as the cockpit construction of previous kit had been started.
Will upload a photo of the minor work undertaken so far.
Being a starter set there are no stencils so will use some from my stock of kits.

My energy levels are low atm so it maybe a few days before I get up and walking! :codger:
Am aiming to bloomin well finish this one as my track record in GBs is not the best and there are too many unfinished kits in plastic containers glaring at me accusingly as it is.

So never mind the quality, feel the width!

Nice to see another entry. I definitely don't have time myself, but liking the spread of choices people have made.

Good luck.

Thanks Grant, I'll need it! :frantic:

Have just walked past my local, well, more sort of stopped in on the way from the bus stop, and walked out with the Airfix 1/72 MkI/II kit
Well, because Castle Brom, not far from where I was born.

P8088's BoB career doesn't seem to have been glamorous and fairly short lived, having pranged on landing in August and not returning to service until the following year. So if there are objections to the subject's eligibility I will remove from the GB.

The History of the aircraft can be seen HERE

Right better try and make a start.
and hopefully post some photos, which I assume will be preferable to my ramblings

Yay another one into the breach!

This GB was a slow burner, but the momentum is building!

Cheers,

Hopefully it will get some momentum on my bench too Rob!

As said, the stencils will be sourced from one of the other 6 Ragwing kits in the stash.
(I only meant to have a couple of the early version, honest!)

This was the one I made a very small start on, and is now destined to be L1592 of 615 Squadron August 1940.
She was damaged after a forced landing when damaged by a Bf109, and Pilot Officer D.J. Looker was injured during the incident.
The airframe now on display at the Science Museum, London.

I will be adding the Freightdog Models 5 spoke wheels, and the pole aerial taken from the Spitfire kit if I can get it to fit.
It literally will be fitting a round peg in a square hole!

Also, due to the condition of the canopy, I will use a vacform canopy and hope I can get it to fit!
There seems little point messing about asking for a replacement. Airfix need to hire a new glazier! :deadhorse:

Posted Image

Initial assembly has begun and have now primed some parts ready for painting the interior.
The overall engineering of the kit seems excellent though I still managed to struggle to fit the wheel well assembly neatly :slaphead:

Have already provided a link to the history of P8088 above.

Posted Image

Have prepared the parts and primed the interior which I hope to start painting tomorrow, all being well.
Hoping to crack on with it. This one will be strictly OOB.

While waiting for the primer to cure, I decided that chopping up the Hurricane pilot would be more fun than making a harness.
It was also an excuse to acknowledge the human side of the conflict.

Not happy with the life preserver having seen the pictures, though tbh was not 100% anyway, so will redo

The Greenstuff on the arms should cure overnight so I can build up the sleeves and hands.
The generic sitting on a bus with hands on lap posture won't cut it with the canopy open, so have tried to remodel the pilot fixing his harness. Am sure it won't all be 100% accurate but as long as it is fun I don't care :P

Will just use the Spitfire pilot as is as the canopy will be closed so he will be good enough

The back of the neck was chopped out and file with Greenstuff
It was then necessary to carve the shoulders as the figure's posture is very upright, and looked unnatural

Edit: Photos removed

Been making slow progress with the Spitfire

Posted Image
Am glad I didn't spent a lot of time detailing. With the pilot in and the rather thick canopy on for a dry fitting, you can't see anything
The pilot looks a lot better IRL, honest! Though this is a poorly moulded fellow with a face like suet pudding which is not the best for painting.
Poor chap. Maybe it's the cocktail stick shoved up his exhaust pipe?
So after I closed up the fuselage halves I thought now would be the ideal time to darken the flying helmet and sculpt an oxygen mask

Hopefully the Hurri pilot is looking better than my first efforts which was so bad I removed the photos.
Bloody macros!

Posted Image

Still some more work to do with the sleeves, and will make a mask with oxygen pipe
Once in the cockpit I will add some straps.

The Spitfire IP decal is not looking brilliant tbh and may get a wash to tone down the white
Since the Hurricane canopy will be open I need to make more of an effort. Also there is no gun sight provided, or if there is I can't find it!
So will have to scratch one

Posted Image

Have opened up the hand hold which is connected to cockpit and stirrup (which is also omitted and will need to be scratched) by a rod and lever system.
Despite the crappy look of my work in the photos, I have been enjoying the project thus far and am actually pleased with the results.

The kick in panel is slightly recessed from the fuselage skin. Airfix have nicely captured the effect, though in opening up the hand hold I removed some more excellent detailing which I will need to replace somehow.

The trim wheel was added from a generic Reheat PE set

As a side note, the instructions call for a grey on the fuselage insides, rather than aluminium dope. I decided to use a Vallejo equivalent as a wash over Humbrol Hu53 Aluminium
This worked imho as it dulled down the metallic paint and gives a better sense of depth.

edit: Also need some stencilling on the starboard emergency kickout panel
There should be two oval holes, I may try and just paint them in. The red mark on the panel represents the handle

Hello....is there anybody out there? :P

Some updates for the Hurricane
The pilot was a tight fit and I had to remove some slices from his arms to fit.
Posted Image

But the old boy is in and buckling on his harness. I seem to have chipped the paint off the goggle, but having just seen some pictures of pilots, they had the sunglasses clips on so will scratch some for the Hurri and spitfire pilot
Posted Image

Overall am quite chuffed with the pilots especially for the Hurricane. Which is just as well since the canopy will hopefully be open.
Have started cutting out the Pavla Vacform canopy. The Aeroclub canopies have a very faint framework which will be a bugger to mask and paint :(

It is a pity the kit part is spoiled by flowlines as it is commendably thin

Didn't bother asking Airfix for a replacement, having done so with the Defiant and received a clear sprue of identically (poor) quality.

Elevators have been dropped, and on the other side, I have reinstated the raised area around the handhold with some styrene, which was sanded back.
A nice touch on this kit is the inclusion of the tail fin fillet which is universally missed on other kits. The whole tail fin is moulded on the port fuselage half with a gap on the starboard side. This means slightly raised fillet is lost.
Posted Image

The Spitfire canopy on the other hand is clear but rather thick, but hey, who am I to talk!
It is not glued on but has a snap fit tightness to it, so not sure there is a need to use any CA on it!

Inspired by a thread on 72nd Scale Aircraft, I dug out the Defiant from the stash.
Am tempted to do another BoB Build, though the intention was to do the nightfighter version.
So there may be an additional build.

Will have to see how I feel about buying another Defiant kit at a time when the Beaufighter, Swift and now Martlet IV are vying for my pennies!

Thanks for looking
And bloody well get cracking on your BoB builds :whip:
It's too quiet Carruthers! I don't like it!

Cheers Rob
All sounds very huggermugger what!
Come on don't be a tease tells us what it is huh tell us huh!! :jump:

I did a bad thing and bought another Defiant so I can do both schemes, which means a 3rd BoB Build
I hope there isn't a deadline for the GB :frantic:

If it is okay with everyone I will forego the formalities of box and contents.

Okay, I was struggling with the Blenheim canopy, so I cracked open the new Airfix Defiant.

Pretty close to the finish, couple of stencils, the wing lamps and the pitot to add and it'll be finished.

Photos before the end of the week and then I'm going to get back on the Blenheim!

Thought I had some more pics, but regardless an update on the Spitfire with apologies.

First play with an airbrush. Had a few niggles which meant I had to redo some paintwork
But got it done, and the decals on

Posted Image

Some more touching post decals + some minor weathering and the matt varnish was applied.

Posted Image

And so for the first time since spring have actually finished a kit!

Posted Image

Will try and take some better pictures when I get to see daylight, and post them in the finished thread.
Now onto the Defiant and also the Hurricane if I can be brave enough to saw the vacform canopy in two.

A final note.
Working slowly on the Spitfire over the last couple of weeks, it was impossible not to think of dear Edgar.
Especially in the closing stages after his passing had been announced.
Not sure if my effort is worthy of the old boy.
But my thoughts were with him and his loved ones

Spot the deliberate mistake though!

Luckily the parts aren't glued in and it won't take long to replace them

Bingo! MOMwinner
Sorry no prize for a correct answer Grant!

Yeah I was baffled (no pun intended) as to why they had fishtails when I was painting them.
Not a Spitfire expert but I know from my Hurricanes that they would have been later, so checked the instructions and confirmed my suspicions.

No idea why or how I used them in the first place :suicide:
