Need some advice please. I purchased this on e-bay for a number of reasons; the car and livery caught my eye and although I have the Tamiya Porsche 934 Jagermeister, I like the idea of another type of car in the same livery. I also fancied doing a Le Mans car and as I have never built anything other than Tamiya (I like the quality of their models) I also decided it was time I tried another manufacturer. However, after seeing a review build on You Tube I am not so sure about it as it looks poor quality; no engine detail at all and if the model is looked at from the rear you can see right through with a completely empty engine bay. Additionally, the headlight covers look a very poor fit. Although I have yet to open the box, after looking at the review, and after doing some research, the actual model differs from the box art. The very front of the model, along with the shape of the headlight covers, seems to be that of the Porsche 962. On the 956 the headlight covers sweep down and then start to 'level out' (in keeping with the curves of the car), yet on the 962 they don't and this is what they are like on the model. Has anyone built this model as I would like to know a bit more about it's quality (or lack of it) and also if anyone knows more about this car, am I right in the assumption that what is in the box is actually the 962?

OK, first things first. That is a Hasegawa Porsche 962 in a dodgy Revell rebox. The decals are lovely. As a Porsche 962 it is actually better in shape, outline and accuracy than the Tamiya kit it just needs more work that is all. As a 956 it is just wrong. I saw them going cheap at The Works and bought 6 for a total output of about £30 IIRC. At that price they make superb parts mules. For instance the wheels from one are now on my Courage Nissan 89c (1990) THC Edited by The Hooded Claw, Mar 3 2014, 08:17 PM.

Thanks Claw, that is very helpful. I am yet to make my mind up whether to re-list it on e-bay, build it as it is (just for a fun build), or buy a Tamiya 956 and use the decals to make the proper Jagermeister 956. I know the decals are only for Stefan Bellof's car who did not get to drive the 962 because he died in this car in an accident at Spa, and as I have yet to discover if there was a Jagermeister 962 building Bellof's 956 will be more accurate. |

your options are varied, bellof was driving a short tail 956 at spa, i am sure this kit is a late 962 short tail. the ground effect venturis are lower. it can be done, but i suspect it may involve using the tamiya 956 as your basic starting point, the rear body off the revell/tamiya 962, and loads of plasticard/kit and dust on the floor. also the wheels and tyres will be needed from the tamiya 956. (later ones were low profiles). however, don't sell it. its a good inexpensive kit to do something with. |
