This was started after Telford as a quick end of year, stash clearing, build. Well December came and went without much modelling.... So now with the end in sight (sort of) and a problem appearing, I thought I had better get posting and see if anyone can offer advice. The box Shot ![]() The colour scheme ![]() Not much to show inside, but here is our intrepid Turk aerobat ![]() So the new year arrived and I knuckled down to rubbing down and getting a coat of Halfords Appliance White on ready for the decals. The wing tips went on OK, so I bit the bullet and did the port side of the fin. ![]() ![]() Not too bad, nothing a bit of touch up wont cure. So, encouraged, I put the stbd fin decal on ![]() Hmmm. The decals have no 'give' are quite thick and brittle. Even with copious amounts of decal sol they break very easily and do not really conform to even smooth curves. This will take some painting to recover, but what worries me most is that big bird decal on the underside - any ideas? cheers Grant |

Grant, I suggest you dispense with all forms of decal solvents and try the water only hairdryer method. I've used it to do full body shell wraps for carbon fibre covered cars and it is simply best. If you want me to talk you through then PM me and I'll give you my phone number. THC |

So - using a hairdryer to soften decals. After I had blown the test piece behind the work bench I got my act together and tried a spare bit of the offending decal sheet on a practice fuselage. (Bonus points for identifying the a/c!)![]() Well I didn't melt the plastic or burn the decal and it went into the contour well enough without tearing, so deep breath and onto the BIG underside decal. ![]() Not 100%, but all my own fault. Too heavy handed, too early at the back end, where I shouldn't have glued the intakes on yet anyway. The port wing/fuselage join has conformed nicely and the even the feint panel lines on the underside are showing. I just didn't look closely enough on the starboard wing root, out by about a millimeter. Later I did the rest of the decals and for the red band around the cockpit, you could actually see the moment when the decal sank into position! Many thanks for the suggestion and explainantion Ian. With a bit of practice I can see this being the method of choice, as you have a lot of control and walk away knowing the job is done. cheers Grant |

That sir is a Beaufort. As i mentioned in This thread I found this to be a bit of a pig of a kit. Really like what you have done though, really looking the part. |

And we have a winner! Yes it is a Beaufort. I bought the kit in Oz, and ended up just using the decals - there was more flash than kit! |

I ended up sticking the decals to a High Planes 1/72 kit. The box I bought in Oz was by Encore. |

Looks great so far Grant. I have used the hair dryer technique with decals, actually I have used a fan heater too on lowest setting. I used it on that Jubilee Tucano about this time last year. |

So this week the tailpipes have been masked and painted, and I have touched up all the cracks in the decals. Colour matching was tricky as the decal red is very bright. But the most notable bit, the fin, has turned out OK.![]() The tips tanks are now on, and with some brass tube for the guns - job done. ![]() ![]() Now onto the in-flight base, and the pose with its F-86 cousin. I'll take some better pictures then. cheers Grant |
