Can't let Bill have all the fun!

Tank is cast from the Trumpeter kit and sanded and carved to a better shape. Superglued onto the F.2A fuselage and then several rounds of filling and sanding (mainly superglue with black MiG pigment added). Here seen with a good thick coat of Mr Surfacer 500. I'll set about it with micromesh tomorrow and start polishing it. Also cut back the tail and started reshaping the tip

Removing the cambered/kinked leading edge. Nice solid parts in the kit here. Removing the kink is just a slicing job, removing the camber on the underside is more sanding, and will also shift the leading edge into line with the rest of the wing because the camber lowered it slightly (Airfix NAILED the camber and kink and wing geometry!)

Unlike Bill there is no prevarication on final variant and scheme with this one. . . from the word go the notion has been to revisit the glorious 56Sqdn scheme with red spine and wing/tail leading edges that I first did as a teeneager in 1987 using an Airfix/Matchbox bash and Modeldecals. This time it's an Airfix/Trumpeter bash and Xtradecals!

There's more than enough fun to share Drewe!! I'm planning on doing my F1a (when I get around to it!) as XM192/K in honour of the old Airfix kit..I may save the 56 Sqn markings for the T4....

Most of the cutty/hacky stuff done. Some refining of some shapes to do (wingtips for example) but overall looking like a Lightning F.1A already. The tank needed a fair bit of work after gluing to refine it's bulge - it'll do!

Not look bad at all.

The narrowing of the bulge is really noticeable in that last shot a lot improved.

Progress. . . all together, and primed with Tamiya fine surface primer. Wet sanded with 6000 grit micromesh and checked for flaws. Next job is to deal with the seat and pilot and get the canopy on before metal painting can begin.

First coat of silver. This will be allowed to harden overnight then thoroughly wet sanded with 8000 grit micromesh and then another thin coat added on top. Then it'l be time for varying some panels.

(C'mon Bill, keep up!)

Edit - quicker than anticipated. About 90 minutes after the first coat I was able to wet sand with 6000 grit micromesh and then give it another coat of paint, this time heavily thinned and built up in several layers. I'm off to bed now, some touch up with 8000 grit on the morrow and than patches time!

Morning's metal work. Three or four shades of Alclad, Gaia, Tamiya AS-12 tinted with colours. Loads of masking but worth it. It's a bit more obvious in the flesh, looks quite subtle here, but I don't want a patchwork quilt effect. Also sprayed the red on the tailplanes as a test to see if I can get a good bright red without a white undercoat. Silver seem okay for an undercoat as long as the red is bright enough (this is Mr Color Red Madder)

Where are you sourcing your Gaia paints from Drewe?

The ones I have now are from Rainbow-10 back when Japan would still allow export of the stuff. Now I'd look either to Hobby Easy or Lucky Model.

This Gaia stuff looks good...certainly after my 'misfortunes' with Mr MetalColour.....

Bill, I avoid anything "buffable" like the plague. Just too fussy and fragile, completely at odds with my techniques. Good solid hard wearing lacquers for. Metal!
