Undercarriage on before even primer? Really? Mine would last about twenty seconds! |

Got the Scale Models in the post today. The article is actually a bit shorter than I remember! But a few points we can definitively clarify now! 1:/The conversion set for the T.5 was a vac form by a company called Tandair, and was, according to the article, reviewed in the September 1978 issue of the magazine. Maybe this is the confusion Bill? Back then reviews often mean "built", so is there a chance that in 1978 the late Ted Taylor reviewed it? That seems to jive with your original "1978" comments! (And does anyone have an April 1978 copy of the magazine to confirm?!?) 2:/The article states that XS458 was painted in a colour "close to BS381c no174" A search shows this to be "oriental blue" , a kind of turquoise/greeny inflected blue colour - but definitely blue, not grey. The article states that humbrol 68 with about 10% 80 grass green was used on the advice of Humbrol and the match was dead on. I still have my doubts, and anyway the article seems to be in error, because Humbrol 68 is gloss purple! I think they actually meant Humbrol 48 which is Mediterranean blue - this looks pretty close to BS381/174 but maybe not quite as green, so the addition of grass green to match Oriental blue makes sense! And the other thing to note is that Oriental blue is pretty close to FS35450 Air Superiority Blue as used on early F-15s, so if it did exist it was clearly a nod to our colonial cousins (just as they abandoned it and went to Compass Ghost Greys!) More questions. . anybody have information on the very early grey testers with full size pink/blue roundels? That would be cool! Edited by Drewe, Jan 11 2014, 02:16 PM.

Yes, that sounds very plausible. I would have thought that whoever viewed the T5 originally would have known Dark Sea Grey when they saw it, so maybe it was a trial BEFORE (or after) '458 was painted DSG?. The ONLY Lightning I've seen with the large pink/blue markings is good old F6 XR770/AA of 5 Sqn. Painted overall 'Barley Grey' with LACG lower wings and tailplane. These markings appeared in both Modeldecal and SAM sheets. I don't think any other Lightning's were treated thus as the Medium Sea Grey/Barley Grey scheme came in soon after. Laterly XR770 had the large markings removed had sharks teeth added, and removed, and then had her fin painted Signal Red. Followed of course by the spine and wing leading edges. When 5 disbanded she went to 11 Sqn and had the red removed. showing a different shade of grey on the spine and fin. |

Ah, XR770 with the red wings and spine over grey. . probably my least favourite Lightning scheme, a real shocker! Those kinked wings simply don't suit red leading edges, and overall the red against grey just looks like it's trying too hard to be back in 1965 and failing abysmally! Modeldecal sheet 65 still available though so that's the scheme sorted (after I check my Modeldecal stash to make sure I don't already have it!) |

A real shocker? Sacrilege of the highest order!! ;-) Regarding MD 65, I probably have a spare or two knocking about if you're short - however I seem to recall that the pale blue was almost grey on that sheet...... I also have (somewhere) the sheet issued free by SAM which included these decals - which I think were in the correct colours.... |

I have sheet 65, but you're right about the colours! They don't look great. I did have the SAM sheet back in the dark mists, so if anyone has it spare it'll find a happy home! |

New info on XS458. . . . apparently it was Dark Admiralty Grey, so a bit bluer than DSG which makes sense. |

Had a bit of a disaster with the painting on this....I had the model primed with Humbrol Grey primer, painted the fin and spine blue, masked off and applied Mr MetalColor Aluminium - which looked great. I had none of their sealant so attempted to use Klear - which looked awful! Maybe the Mr MetalColour hadn't hardened enough I dunno, but I had to strip the whole thing down. I've now re-primed, and added the blue again. I'm going to try Revell Aqua Silver and Aluminium this time.......Pics to follow later |

Chap on this Facebook page who was there when they were trialling schemes, and also a very nice pic of her - and it doesn't look like DSG there, bit lighter and bluer. XS458 |

Hi Bill, Quick question if I may, how did you apply the Mr Metalcolor? If by airbrush, what do you use the clean the airbrush afterwards? Thanks, Tony |

Thanks, I tend to apply Mr Metalcolor with a brush and use the brush to bring the paint to a shine but wouldn't want to do a whole airframe this way, hence my question
