OK, having emailed Moya Greene on Nov 28th - I got a reply this morning:

Thank you for your email. I work as part of Moya’s senior team and have been asked to look into your enquiry on her behalf.

Please allow me some time to look into this matter. I will reply in full shortly.

Kind regards

David Gee

I will update as and when ....

Hmm, that sounds like "We'll file it and forget it....."

At least you had a reply
However, it sound like her "senior team" don't have a clue , as he needs time to look into it...

Well, I forgot my deadline but got an answer this morning:

Further to my acknowledgement email of 5 December 2013, I would like to apologise for the delay in my reply. I have been looking into your enquiry and can now respond.

As you are aware, water based paints can be sent by Royal Mail both inland and internationally. In order for us to safeguard other mail with a view to limiting spillages which could potentially cause damage to other mail in our network, we made the decision to limit the amount of water based paints we allow in any one package. Customers can still post these kind of paints and wood stains but are restricted to a volume per item not exceeding 150ml and no more than four items can be sent in any one package. The restriction is in place as part of our terms and conditions.

Whilst we have no immediate plans to make changes to the restriction, we have recently received a number of customer enquiries in relation to it. We are listening to customer feedback and have escalated your concerns along with others to our senior policy and decision makers for consideration.

Alcoholic beverages can be sent by Royal Mail but have their own specific restrictions and prohibitions. Thank you for taking the time to email Moya, and giving us the opportunity to respond.

Yours sincerely

David Gee

Chairman and Chief Executive Office

Glad I didn't hold my breath, and it didn't tell us anything we didn't already know, but it does say they are trying to listen!

One stat I would like to know (with all due respect to resident posties) is how many spillages have occurred involving model paints dispatched in properly packed parcels in proportion to the total number of model paints dispatched over a given period? Also, how many spillages have occurred due to mishandling by the carrier over the same period? If this is so significant that it requires a draconian rule to be applied to parcels containing model paints, I'll eat one of my hats. Also, if it's OK to ship alcohol, what's the big deal with spirit based paints, let's say for the sake of argument 12 x 15ml tinlets (rather less than a third of a 750ml bottle)?

8x17ml bottles of Vallejo paint = 136ml not allowed
One bottle of Walrus Pink Acrylic tuskwash = 150ml

And I can send 4x150ml = 600ml

Okay Royal Mail. Now I understand

I believe it was the guys at SNM who said they have sent over 100,000 bottles. of paint in recent years. Total spillage so far? Three, all of which were contained in the packaging. This is a solution looking for a problem.

Ok chaps, bear with me here. I moved out to yank land a year ago. So this whole Royal mail paint thing has luckily passed me by. But am I correct in reading that NO paint can now be shipped via postie? So say you lived in the middle of nowhere and you relied on Hannants for your paint (something I can relate to) What would Hannants now have to use a courier instead of RM and then jack the postage rate up?

Either way seems damned silly to me.

You can but you can have no more than 4 bottles/tinlets of acrylic in a package
So if you want to buy say a dozen colours and save some cash on postage you will now have to make three separate orders, presumably with extra postal charges.

That is how I interpret the situation. And being a cynical sod see it more about RM revenue generation than concerns about spillage

I use DPD couriers and it is now broadly cheaper than Royal Mail.

I sent a small parcel cheapest option untracked RM yesterday cost me in excess of £6, DPD fully tracked and real time traceable is £6.25!

And they'll carry as much paint as I can order.

So my point remains, why argue with the bean counters at RM, convince your favourite online store to switch to DPD or similar and hit them where it hurts right in the shareholder's pockets.

I have to admit, that with the exception of only 1 case DPD have delivered stuff to me within 1 hour of promised, I get..

1 an email telling me the goods are on their way
2 an sms telling me the approximate time of delivery

Royal Snail, last week, left goods in our local sorting office for 24 hours longer , despite it being guaranteed TRACKED on a next day...
