Ladies and gents, if I can ask you to sign this

http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/royal-mail-lift-the-restrictions-on-shipping-water-based-paints

Long story short, the RM have decide to restrict the carrying of water based paint (no reason offered) which is penalising businesses large and small at a time when the UK should be encouraging economic growth, not smothering it with daft decisions that make no logical sense (waster based paint in a plastic pot is a hazard, flammable alcoholic spirits in glass bottle are not). Plus the newly privatised RM is supposed to be winning customers over, not pissing them off.

Why should modellers care? Because it'll affect our hobby big time!

We only need a hundred or so signatures to reach the target.

Go for it!

Signed and shared on Facebook

Am sure that there are many people, not just involved with our hobby, that rely on mail order for paints.
I have a LHS 50 yards away that have the Vallejo Game range and if I am prepared to wait they will order from the Model range for me.
If I didn't have that I would be screwed.

I really don't understand the need for this restriction. It could severely restrict people with mobility issues, who rely on hobbies to help keep them going doolally from boredom.

I noticed the post on FB from SnM Stuff this morning - he's just fallen foul ... and was trying to work out how to get his paint to one of the Scottish islands, as he's got customers there. He's livid!
Thankfully he's only just up the road from us so we don't have to worry, but I think Johnathan has hit the nail on the head.
Wonder if they'll actually sit up and take notice? Fingers crossed.

*** Update - 27th November ***

The petition has been discussed during a conference call at Royal Mail today, so at least we've got their attention! Unfortunately, at this stage, they have decided that there will be no changes made to the restrictions.

We have also now been given a reason for the restrictions, which is that it's to 'safeguard the rest of the mail in the system from potential damage'. Now this is perfectly understandable, but there is still no reply on how 5 x 17ml pots of paint can cause more damage than 4 x 150ml pots? Or how 1 litre of whiskey in a glass bottle is seen as a lesser risk than a 200ml pot of acrylic paint?!

So, we have some answers, but still no real progress on these illogical restrictions, and the potential to amend them.

What's the next stage?

Basically, we need numbers! Despite gaining 2,500 signatures in less than a week, we're obviously not registering strongly enough on their radar, so we need to really push the petition out there and gain more support.

So, we're asking everyone who has signed so far to please help us spread the word. Post this on your Facebook walls, on your Twitter feeds, on your blogs, your forums and your websites. Even Tweet some politically inclined celebrities if you like! We're working hard at this end to get some national coverage in hobby magazines and national newspapers, so there's a lot more to come!

Many thanks for your support so far.

Cheers,

Leon Pengilley

'safeguard the rest of the mail in the system from potential damage'.

Do postmen jump up and down on parcels rip open the packaging and hit the paint containers with a mallet?
Force parcels through the same machines as letters?

Oh no, you're not cynical - I can remember some stories about what goes on in sorting offices, but they are probably "just stories" ;)

Mark it for the attention of Moya Greene and ask (A) why the restrictions have been put in place and (B) why are the RM are happy to carry far more volatile liquids, (C) how is this helping economic recovery and (D) how is this encouraging people to use the newly privatised Post Office.

And for the Britmodeller admins - I feel this campaign is so important that i have created an account to make a one-off post to bring the issue to BM's membership. One post and then no more. Its an issue bigger than any personal squabbles.

Edit: My gesture was declined, no problem I'm sure another member will run with the cause and get their membership behind it.

Meanwhile, in common sense land, the best way to deal with this issue is for Mail order companies to use alternative carriers. Steve at www.hiroboy.com uses Interlink now. For less general cost than RM you get text tracking and specific delivery times. If all the mail order companies move away from RM it will hit them where it hurts most in their shareholders' pockets, that'll focus their minds.

I appreciate that in some circumstances RM is the cheapest alternative but it is not always the best.

Sorry Ian ..

Chris - hope you enjoyed ...

Back to the problem, if the cost isn't greater then that's OK - and if the service is as good or better, then courier is the way forward. If it becomes too expensive then we're back to square one for small quantities of paint.
