Hi all,

I thought there might be a thread up by now, but in the absence of one I will start one myself :)

My weekend started on Thursday, which I had booked off work so that I could finish my green Norseman for the Splash display, which I duly did, and then got the car packed ready for Fridays journey. We did a bit of a non direct journey on Friday as we went to Witney first to pick up some boots we'd ordered for Baby Ruth, then we planned stopped off at Karls house to pick up his Splash display models. As it happened, it took ages to get there because as soon as we got to the motorway, the traffic was going about half as fast! Too much cars, and a lot of spray making visibility pretty bad were to blame, but progress couldn't be made regardless due to the usual lack of any sort of lane discipline from the majority of motorists :adolf:

So after a flash visit to Karl and his Mum, we set off to get to our hotel, where I planned to Leave Lee and Ruth while I went to the show to get set up. When we finally found the hotel (booked since May), we were shocked to discover that it had closed down! It was all boarded up and there was junk everywhere, this after 5 hours in the car......
Since I had booked via Laterooms.com I called them in the hope they could find me another room, and thankfully they did. It was a rubbish room in the Days Inn on J4 of the motorway, but it saved me a drive!

All this meant that Ruth had to wait in the car while I dropped off and set up, so she was understandably a bit fed up by the time we were done :godzirra:
A quick trip to Frankie and Bennys cheered her up though and then we went off to our sumptuous room.

Saturday was a super early start, I was picked up by Vince and the merry modelsforsale crew and arrived at the centre at 7am. This did at least allow plenty of time to get the Splash table fine tuned as I greeted the guys and placed everything. The L&C crew were not far behind me, and by about 9 both tables were pretty much done and dusted. The rest of the day was a bit of a blur, it was so busy. I walked around a bit but saw very little since everywhere was about 5 deep with punters. Saw a few friends and had a few nice chats, and almost before I knew it, it was time to return to Hotel Paradiso. The Starbucks next door furnished us with a surprisingly tasty tea and then we went back to the room. Lee and Ruth had spent the day at Dudley Zoo and were just as knackered as me so it was a quiet evening :)

As usual, Sunday is the day for me to do my shopping and chatting. I also spent about 3 hours in all manning the modelforsale stall to help Vince out. I bought some neat bits and bobs from Uschi Van Der Rosten, who is a funny bloke (he gave me free schnapps), some of his wood grain decal, super fine elastic rigging thread and some walkway masks to suit my super slow FW190 build. I also picked up some Alclad gloss clear from Little Cars, some Gunze paint from Bob at MDC, a fresh pack of slide fit tubing from Albion Alloys and a Putt Putt Trolley Acc kit from Matador models.
I took 11 kits with me to sell, 8 of them were sold, I brought 2 home and the last one was swapped for an 80's boxing of the Airfix HH-53C Super Jolly Green Giant.
The rest of the funds raised were put with the payment for the IAI Finger I made for Freightdog Models and were spent on a Wingnut Wings DH 2, and a partially built Tamiya Spitfire XVI from Spencer Pollard.

A nice little haul, which I am very pleased with :)

As usual it all went by in a flash in the end, and I felt like I hardly spent any time with anyone! Not to worry, SMW 2014 will be on us before you know it ;)

Turning up to a boarded up hotel is just such a "Scary Movie" moment - it beggers belief in this day and age.

It was such a meet and greet fest this year I had such a sore throat at the end of Saturday from so much talking. I was surprised at how little impact the 50th seemed to have had but the show was up to its usual standard with some great stuff to see.

Thinking of next year already.

cheers

Jen that does sound like a real nightmare. Glad you were able to get something sorted though.

My SMW adventure is probably now officially over. I got home a little earlier this evening. The journey was fairly uneventful, although the heavy cold I got free at the show didn't make it that comfortable.

This year was my second visit, the first time I'd done both days and the first time I displayed anything at a show. Also a first for me was three Nick/Nicholas' in one small pllace (The automotive enclave).

Right from the off I had a good couple of days. It was great to see/meet everyone. I wasn't really sure what to expect so many thanks to everyone for making me feel at home. It was also good to be so involved on a stand (Thanks to Ian and Richie here especially).

Luckily for me the L&C stand and the F1 Sig stand were across the way, so I didn't have far to walk! I loved both stands. Ian's design for the F1/Motorsport Sig was a real eye opener (Deserved prize in my book, as was the North Somerset shed!) and the models were really fine. Was interesting to see people stopping to admire the D Types or reminiscing about how they were at Brands to see the Porsche 917's. Across the way the L&C shone with great variety and great modelling. I think it offered a good range of what goes on here (Foxy we do need a ship next time though...) From what I saw the punters favourites seemed to be either Dean's imaginative Exploded Lightning Mk2 or Elvira on the couch (Chadders' work?). Dean if you're reading, maybe we should consider a semi exploded Elvira next year. It might reduce the potential for punters to poke their eyes out on the Antenna, while trying to look up her skirt!

There were an awful lot of good quality models on show and I got a fair bit of inspiration for the next year. Although I walked all the halls I've still got a feeling I didn't see everything.

I also had one of those bizarre meeting people moments. I live in a small town in Southern Germany, not one you'd necessarily know of. I drive across the Black Forest and France and England to get to the show and then get introduced to a modeller from the town next to mine - 10-15km's away. I think he was slightly more shocked than me, but not by much.

Before I go, did anyone get the definitive answer as to what happened to the Enterprise? Was it fitted with a scale Romulan cloaking device?

Next year is pencilled in already.

Cheers,
Nick

A punter saw it, wanted it, made chadders an offer, sold!

Sorry about the cold but glad you had a good time. Same again next year?

Shall I add to the weekend diaries with our weekend?

Arrived on Friday about 2:30 to find the corner we were on wasn't big enough ... oh dear!
Got moved to the other end of the row - confusing some What-if modellers in the process.
The others and the shed arrived 4:00ish just behind the tank transporter. So we had to walk the shed in and wait for the spitfire to be assembled, then we moved into the corner with the nice men with all the really expensive kits .... who (quite rightly) complained about the fact that they had actually paid for the corner. By this time we had built the shed and moved it once. Now we had to move it again, back to the space where we built it. I will add pictures tomorrow!
So, by arriving in good time, by 7:45 we had been in the hall faffing for 5 1/4 hours.
We went back to the hotel and walked into town to the pub - a well earned pint and a meal!
Saturday saw us back in the hall getting the models set up at ungodly o'clock, for the show to open at 10. There were people who we had to ask to step back while we were doing this - they just didn't understand we needed the space!
Saturday came and went in a flurry of stickering people and shopping ... a CH-53, Apache, the Belcher bits G-LYNX conversion, and a gift of small aeroplanes ...
We then went to the dinner - dressed appropriately in Allsorts bow ties and waistcoats, making an entrance as only North Somerset could.
Sunday dawned and it was another round of being nice to people, and eventually finding out that we'd won the branch cup - Andy T and I were congratulated by Phil Cater, who then had to tell us why!
I congratulated Ian (Mr Claw) and said I was sorry we'd beaten him, but then realised we hadn't because he's a SIG - D'oh! Hey ho ... :P
We packed up at 4 - loaded up the van with the shed etc, took our models and went back to our hotel to relapse and relax. My legs didn't stop jumping until Tuesday!
When we checked out on Monday I booked the rooms for next year - the lass on the desk told me the dates, so I thought I'd better.

So, onwards to next year  Need to know the theme :wooo:
Grant -thank you for doing a great job on the L and C stand this year, it looked great.

Can't top Jen booking a hotel which then closed - I would have been livid - hope you gave them hell when you rang. But we had a good time at the show, time went so quickly that I realised I hadn't done half the stuff that I wanted to. :hypnotised:
Monday saw me get my Jeep fix - went and spent some time with a guy who's restored a CJ2A like what I'm restoring, so my modelling may take a back seat - I want my Jeep on the road!

All in all a really good SMW though - enjoyed it loads.

No, I didn't give them hell H, it wasn't Laterooms' fault at all. They were very apologetic, but since the owners had not told them of the closing there was nothing they could do.
I am pleased that at least the people who had booked from Saturday were going to get warned before they arrived!

H... has price increased for next year or are they holding it same as this? I for one enjoyed being there, as it was so so convenient.

£75/night/room B and B Cancellable (?) up until 4pm the previous day.
I've already allocated most of my rooms!

Glad that you didn't have to rant Jen! As you say, if no-one talks to them how do they know?
Where was this hotel, just out of interest?

It was the old vicarage country house, in the built up bit of Telford on the other side of the M54. It looked really nice, and ideal for Ruth. But not to be....

Yes, that's pretty much what mine was like; that's life when you're running a SIG stand. Thanks to my colleagues MrsC and I managed to secure a bit more wander time and as well as the meeting we did an hour on the kitswap on Sunday. But tbh it makes for quite an interesting weekend manning one's stand, watching the world go by and talking to all and sundry. Congrats on the trophy THC.
