Hi Gang.

I'm doing this one for the Airfix group build over at HS.

The photos were taken late last night- so the colours (although intentionally washed out) are now really washed out due to flash photography, it may not look a lot yet, but I can assure you a lot of work has gone into this one. I can confirm the fuselage is dark light blue fading to light blue :)
After struggling with trying to do "everything at once" over the years with '109 models, I now have a system where I am painting her from the bottom up- so I have yet to add the final fuselage decking to get to my starting point- a factory fresh 109E in 71/02/65 with 65 wraparound leading edges. doing things this way will make the masking a whole lot straightforward in the long run.

I am going to use Master barrels, and the biggest ciritiques of the kit I can make so far are that Airfix should really have spent more time on the canopy, including also a one piece option in the kit- and that the fuselage spine filler port is actually missing. It seems people realise this about the time they have painted it (damn) and are about to apply the octane triangle- and cannot work out where it should go. :(
Other criticisms are the fact the tailplane struts are incredibly difficult to separate from the sprue- I managed to get one off ok, and as usual with any 109E kit ever made,the prop is a bit anaemic.

Anyhow- on with the photos, and expect an update in a day or so :)

Now- for 109 afficonados, I am including a profile of the bird I am doing;

And a point for discussion. In the below photo- I am strongly convinced the two top "bars" of the rudder are in fact yellow- although I see no other profiles etc that capture this fact.
There is a solid side view of this aircraft taken during/after the Battle for France, and it has the kill markings shown in the colour profile. However, I have some photos of the machine taken in the early stages of B.o.B. that have two or three more kill markings, and like the included photo, have a definite trace of a solid colour at the top of an otherwise still mottled rudder.
This ties in perfectly with nacent yellow i.d. markings in the early B.o.B. period.

Looking good mental, I don't envy you at that mottle paint scheme, how are you going to pull that off in 1.72?

Hi Gang.

Well I have been fairly busy today- had a few disasters along the way, but happily all overcome and i now have a factory fresh Bf109E ready to abuse however I see fit :ninj:

firstly, I carried on with the masking and got the top fuselage painted- I used my new technique of BlueTak sausages, but with a twist being the use of the marvellous Parafilm to quickly and easily mask off the adjacent areas- the beauty being the stuff bends in any direction, and sticks to the BlueTak like -well- you know;

After spraying the '02, I carried on masking and applied the '71;

Hey hey hey!! :wooo:

Living in an area with extremely hard water- and after many little bloops in the past- I went the nuclear option and in preparation for some basic decalling, used a stainless bowl and some very low calcium filteres water- WHY didn't I think fo this before!!!

Last one for tonight- more fun tomorrow, unless Algy and Bertie get to him first!

The swastika seems to be the right size if the illustration is correct Rich!
Glad you got it sorted, looking grand! :thumbsup:

Hi mate- well it's still fractionally large- but as it is going to be stippled to death it's close enough.
I am going to get a sheet of the ones in the link you sent me :)
And don't forget to send your snail for the P-51 wheel :)

Today it's painting out the imaginary delivery codes, then extra background toning before the bit I'm dreading starts.

Now, where does one get this Parafilm stuff?

Little Cars or ebay. If the latter do a search for Parafilm M. I'm sure there's other traders that stock it, but can't think of any at the moment.
