And for my next trick ladies and Gentleman I shall be building Trumpys well known attempt at a Vigilante. Ummm...Not really a bad kit by all accounts, but not really a great one either, nose shape is a tad off with a rather large omission of the cheek bulges forward of the air intakes. This throws the shape of the whole nose off, apparently the hump is incorrect too, but I know very little about the Vigilante other than what I have read in Squadron Signals book, and well....it looks like a Vigilante to me and well, that is all that matters. Added some various bits and bobs to the cockpit to spruce it up, also added one store bought pilot and the guy in the back...well him....he is one of my new attempts at casting my own pilots....Very happy with the result. So far I have also scratch built some intake trunking as the kit provides nothing, not even a blanking plate and well, it looks odd. So with some plaster card I shall create a trunking that goes into the back of the fuse to give a far more realistic appearance when viewed head on.

This is the current progress, stay tuned for more updates.

I think I shall be hand spraying the scheme, I do like the look of the RVAH-11 'Checker Tails' from the 1972 USS Constellation cruise, has a pretty colorful tail and shark mouth on the air intake. I want to however depict a Vietnam era machine, so I can weather it suitably, more research is needed.

You possibly want to have a look at the work of the Japanese modeller who used to post feature articles on 60's grey/ white USN stuff over at HS.

Voggies tended to fly from the ship- go up- stay up- miss the shi dirty air, and fly back and land- so they tend to stay fairly clean- or more to the point- it's a large aircraft, and in 1/72 it's not going to look too messy

Oh aye I knew that, was going to keep weathering nice and basic, but did not want the factory fresh look. Cracking photo by the way.

Been awhile since I updated this, so time for an update...

Model has gone together pretty well, a few minor issues with fit and some rather nasty mould lines which took some time to eradicate, but all in all, looks pretty good to me.

Did I mention this plane is big, damn this is massive in 1/72 scale, going to look cracking on my shelf. Next up the real fun part, painting and weathering, going to try some new salt weathering techniques on this build.

Hope you are enjoying the show.

The Vigi is such a beautiful aeroplane. If you haven't seen this site , take the time to read everything, and watch the youtube content, too.

I think, for whatever faults this kit has, it's an easier build than the Airfix kit. Plus, the u/c bays have detail.

Good luck with the rest of it.

Cheers for the link, I found that site at the very start of the build, must of read it through several times now. Amazing aircraft with such an incredibly high loss rate.

It's the same deal that the RAF Tornadoes had ... when you're on the deck, even a rifle is within range to hit you. Not to mention the lack of surprise - the expectation that the recce would follow the strike ...

Well I have found a few pictures of my intended subject and it looks like it has been dragged through a hedge backwards, apparently it was rather weathered due to being on station at the Gulf Of Tokin. Should be able to shoot some paint on it tomorrow, will have photos for you all on Wednesday.

Well as promised I managed to spray some paint on the beast over the past few days. Mostly life colour acrylics with some tamiya paints here and there. I have based my weathering and painting of a few photos and profiles of my intended subject, all of which show it in a fairly knackered state during the Vietnam war. Hope you find the painted product as pleasing as I do. Mental thoughts?

Sorry for the crap photos, shall try and do better next time. The underside is weathered in the same technique as the top side, just with a very heavily thinned mixture, almost close to just very dirty thinners. So the effect is very subtle on the model.

Those are mental, I have kept the initial weathering to just some light salt weathering and general muck. Next step is washes and what not. Which should be done some time this week, all the while I am working on custom painting the tail.
