Well it's been some time since I posted a good ol' WIP, this has been down to my move from England to Americaland. Well now I have my stash, my camera and my photo-booth I can show you what I have been working on. While out here looking for model shops (Not many surprisingly enough) I stumbled across the academy wildcat, now knowing very little of it's providence I picked it up, took it home and was somewhat disappointing when I fumbled the spures. Basic. Very, very basic. No cockpit, just a chair attached to the side, horribly thick canopy and a okish engine. So....what did I do. Well I scratch built an entire cockpit, complete with the suspended floor, vac formed a new canopy, opened up all the radiator vents, and scratch built new ones, opened up the shell ejection ports under the wings and various other holes, scratch built 2 new exhaust stubs (still to be painted) super detailed the engine with rods and mags and the odd wire here and there (very little can be seen, but hey I know it's there) and finally, riveted the entire airframe.

Painted using pretty much just Tamiya paint, multiple levels of lightened paint sprayed over a pre-shaded primed base. I have also done 2 rounds of salt weathering, toning in each layer after application to give a subtle weathered effect, first time I have tried this, but I am happy with the result. Still away to go yet, not the easiest of builds as the wheels were not designed to fit in the retracted position, requiring vast amounts of filler and re-sculpting to achieve a passable affect.

Still got some more work todo before the decaling stage, but at it's current state I am pretty happy with it, light years ahead of the standard Academy kit.

50 odd views and no one can be bothered to say anything, why should I therefore bother to continue posting the Wip.It takes time and effort to post wips, granted this one is pretty far along. If someone takes the time to post their work, and you take the time to view it, the least you can do is comment. We don't want all " aaahh amazing" "best model ever", constructive comments such as, i like this, not a fan of that, or how did you do... it's the reason why we post, to get feedback and to show new skills.

Hi Floyd
I looked and marvelled late (3:00pmish iirc) too tired to comment, so left it for when I was more able, which I am now (barely )

As usual I thought I really need a FAA Wildcat or too. At least one for my intended HMS Victorious wing. Looks really good. Looking forward to more!

If your after a decent wildcat, i hear the hase one is pretty sweet, the academy one is just too basic unless you throw some serious aftermarket or scratch build at it.

It is, although it suffers with a plain cockpit that needs a bit of dressing. True Details do a nice resin tub.

Wondering if Airfix will produce one.
Guessing in terms of USA WW2 types the Corsair and Thunderbolt will be ahead.
But a Wildcat would be sweet.
Not getting a lot of hits looking for Hase.
Hobby Boss seems most frequent but suppose that is rather basic

Well the Academy one is not too bad, you will need to throw some AM at it though, new cockpit, can send you some vac form canopies, the rest is just filler and modelers work. Or you can just scratch build the pit (easier to just plumb out for one) and some new decals.

Hi Nick- happens to all of us.

Yet you post just ONE (infinitessimally small) comment about a Welsh Footballer, and the whole world decends on your neck :)

You just get used to it after a while.. Could be worse- you could have put it up a HS, and if they had a viewcount, then it would probably be 25000 and no comments lol.
Looking forward to seeing it decalled.
