Well I'm at the closing stages of my Seiran build. I started this one up at mum's over the snowy period, it's all now coming together quite nicely.

Major drama/Traumas so far- short shot canopy- cracked decals, replacement canopy from Japan usable but somehow cooled after moulding to be slightly too narrow for the fuselage :(

This is the beastie after final flat varnishing (XF-86) and post varnish oils tratments.

This is the beaching trolley- halfway through detail painting- it's come out really nicely. I used the hairspray technique for the first time (felt like Sean going into shop and asking for women's products) but I had trouble actually making the effect work- I had to scrub like billy-o to get anything to come off at all- so not quite sure what the trick is. I mixed my own colour for the trolley, and as I said- it's half done- but enjoying trying to replicate a bleached wood effect on the slats. I made bolt holes for the wooden slats with a sharp needle in a pin vice- small details like this improve the illusion no end.

Here is one of the floats- I haven't painted the other one yet (I know I know) but has yet to be flat varnished and final oil washed.

Hope you like it- comments and critiques welcome :)

After this one is done I'm going to start an Airfix 1/72 Bf109E for the group build over at HS.

Looking good Rich. :like:
This is one of those planes that always piqued my interest.
They seem quite hard to come by in 1:48.
How long did you let the top coat of paint dry over the hairspray before scrubbing?
Shouldn't leave it for more than an hour or so as it starts to cure and gets harder to remove. Also, did you use gloss or flat paint? It seems to work better with flat paint in my experience.

Thanks Mike!

Well I wasn't sure how much to put on, andwas quite frightened by the amount that came out of the aerosol, so only gave it a coule of quick passes.
Now you have to remember that yesterday was blindingly hot, and I did probably leave it for 4-5 hours before scrubbing.
The paint was probably around 2/3 gloss.

With regard to a 1/48 Seiran, I don't have one, but I will keep my eyes open. Didn't realise they were difficult to find!

Oh, and another thing- there are no Eduard canopy masks available for this one- so I had to use Bare Metal Foil- and worked out a neat trick for removing the residue in the process!

Looking good Mental old chap. I've seen some of these beaten to hell which is unlikely in reality, so your approach so far gets my vote.

The 1/48 ones are pretty thin on the ground, took me ages to find one, and I haven't seen another one since. Mind you, I can't find a 1/72 one either.

I'm interested in RC subs and was going to do the I400 in 1/48 with Seirans on board (8' :hypnotised: ) but couldn't find any plans. I would have to measure the Tamiya 1/350 kit and do my own plans, which is far from ideal.

Rich- sending you a PM.

As far as the Seiran goes- weathering wise- let's see.

They only made about 16 of them (ish) and they were all intended to go inside subs.

So my take is they would have been manufactured as secretly as possible, finished well, to enable the airframes to survive at sea, and as soon as test flown, would be flown to the Submarine base for loading onto a sub- and then locked away inside it's hangar.

I'm a fan of realistic and appropriate finishes, and that is my take- and subsequently how I went with mine- which as it is, must almost be bordering on a whiffer.
Very few photos at all exist of "operational" Seirans, and remember the one that was restored in America has run the gauntlet of time.

With regard to a sub project- I think 1/72 would be far more interesting, and may just fit in the bath!
