Two marking options:
1) K7985 (L8032/G-AMRK) Of the Shuttleworth Collection, Shuttleworth (Old Warden) Aerodrome, Bedfordshire, England, 2012, flown in the markings of Edgar James 'Cobber' Kain, No 73 Squadron, Hendon Air Pageant 1937.
2) No 1 Fighter Squadron, Aer Ch r na h ireann (Irish Air Corps), Baldonnel Aerodrome, Ireland, 1940.

Moulded in the grey the plane comes on two runners containing 54 parts of wonderfully detailed plastic with fine engraving and raised detail appropriate to replicate the construction of the prototype.

And one of transparent including optional framing for whichever version you are building and separate windshield of the two types if wanting to make the canopy open.

A bit detail

I know it's being discussed on the forum but I'm about to start it. Just washed the plastic tonight, need a couple of colours from LHS tomorrow and will start it tomorrow evening. Presently thinking of making the Irish version.

I'll update regularly but of course if there are QC issues it does not necessarily mean other builders will experience the same as me (making three Airfix Gnats at the moment, two are going together fine, the third is needing a little more work).

For a brand new moulding there is a fair bit of the seam needs cleaning up

The Irish scheme is attractive John
Thanks for the sprue shots btw

Certainly looks nice on the sprues, but just look at the size of some of the sprue gates and also how awkwardly placed some of them are on the smaller delicate parts. This will need extreme care to remove parts I think.

There is more flash than I was expecting but it is mainly restricted to engine and prop and should be easily removed.

The sprue gates seem to be a common issue on the new Airfix kits, I presume it's something to do with the type of plastic they are using and the level of detail they are trying to achieve. The plastic is quite soft so I'm hoping a good blade should get the parts off without damaging them. Time will tell.

Is your plastic light grey- it looks like that in the photos?
Certainly the sprues I saw were light blue- like the Spitfire.
IF so, is this a review model?
Having tackled the Spit, (and winning) I may now be tempted with more.
One thing I noticed on the sprue was a similarity with the way the tailplanes are located with large tabs- on the Spit 22, they went "past centre" through the fuselage-(even carefully trimmed back to the point you are removing serious plastic,) but stopping the tailplanes fom seating against the fuselage.
Yet another example of a simple to rectify problem for the advanced modeller, but one to catch the kids out.

All the retail sprues I've seen have been light grey, as regards the tailplane I'll test it tonight and get back to you.

Back in the day the quality of kits wasn't that high and we stuck 'em together and were happy to play with them. As I matured and got more experience more care and attention were put on the final product. I think manufacturers have developed their range to try and fulfill our increasing expectations possibly to the detrement of the fun factor required at the entry level of our hobby.

Starter kits were a help, and the new quick build ranges may help bring younger people into the fold.

Some of my kids have started to potter around with kits, I constantly have to fight the urge to offer advice. So far I have succeeded and when advice is sought it's always offered after finding out what they are wanting to achieve rather than assuming they want a model to my standards (whatever they are).

On Radio 5 this lunchtime, they were running a news story about Hornby, and that they were bringing their production of some ranges back to the UK.
The brand name Airfix, and the phrase "quality control" were mentioned in adjacent sentences..
Interesting the sprue colouring.

Looks good does that kit.

I use a stanley knife for this job of cutting from spru, I know its a heavy thing but it does give you a clean cut(with a sharp blade).

Also use a fine saw blade.

Great to see this aircraft out, even tho I will never build it :D

Cheers foxy :coolio:

My LHS owner was saying that Hornby were bringing back (some?) production to the UK
With Humbrol also coming back to the UK afaik, this could bode well for Airfix coming home too.

I read somewhere that they will be producing the Snap kits in Sussex.
About 10% of the overall production will be made in England.

The paint was brought back for UK manufacture last autumn.
