From a 1957 mold, and an 80s(?) boxing here is my attempt at a Bristol Fighter.
This will be complete as a 2 Sqdrn machine to go with a Tornado to follow later...

Lots of release pin marks, that leave a shadow in the plastic, so you can't tell just by looking that it has gone!

The two shelves inside for the top half only crewmen just won't do. So out with the Dremel (for the first time) and smoothed off the inside to make room for a scratch interior. Thanks to a local modeller for some great shots of the de-skinned example at Henlow. The resin seats a ones I made earlier. A simple seat, with wire mesh added for that wicker effect and then mold taken. Last two in the spares box.

And then onto try and show some detail on the rib tapes. Halfords grey undercoat, Humbrol 191 (shiny silver) and then the masking tape.
Posted Image

This was followed by Humbrol 56, a darker silver. Weeelll, that didn't quite work.

The rib tapes are now the darker bits and the rest appears lighter. I am a little confused at the moment, and feel a lot of fiddly experimentation coming on...

cheers

Firstly, you're either brave or quite mad for taking this on!

Strips of decal painted the required colour as rib tapes? Quite prototypical to do it like that.

If I can get the dark and light the right way around it will be fine.
The decal idea sounds good but I think I'll stick with the paint and use decal paper for markings etc.

A learning experience, particularly trying to do fine work with the airbrush, so I'll carry on for now.

cheers

While waiting for the paint on the wings to dry, I have completed a scratch built cockpit.
Tamiya tape for the rudder pedals, seat belts and ammunition drum handles. Drums were punched out of plasticard.
Seat are some resin ones I made a few years ago. I took a simple plastic bucket seat, added some wire mesh for a wicker
effect and then took a mold. Painted brown then a thin black wash to highlight the mesh.
I used 100% Elastane for the control wires. Didn't bother thinnng for scale, as I wanted it seen in the bowls of the model.

Quite pleased with the way it has turned out and, yes, it is 1/72nd scale.

Now for the insturment panel and magnetos...

Thanks for the kind comments. Getting to the end of the internals now...

Here is the instrument panel. Dials are simple holes drilled then painted black.
Brass wire is from a wire net around a wine bottle.

Posted Image
Then the magnetos: Drilled out the recess and built a small frame to hold the 'face' inside the engine bay.
Again the 'discs' are just a small drill, through the top coat, to reveal the white underneath.

Posted Image

And now we get to the end of my imagination (and courage!).
The exhaust is a good shape, but molded as part of the fuselage, and the cowling is wrong,
and the radiator is a bit rough.
Posted Image

Dare I do anything to these obvious, external, parts or would a paint job suffice?
I have run out of ideas at the moment so any helpful comments gratefully received.

cheers

I think the radiator face would be quite easy, and would look mint if you pulled it off. The exhaust would be harder but a little jig to get all the curves the same and it could look awesome :)

I think the rad slats are eminently do-able and the kit part is way below par, but I'd give the exhausts a miss.

Thanks for the encouraging comments folks. Just what I needed (ie. a good KUTA!)

So having taken out the middle of the radiator, how to get a good fitting back plate, as drawing around the inside with a pencil didn't run out good enough. Answer - stick it to a bit of card and spray it! It needed an undercoat anyway.
Posted Image

That then provided the template for the wire mesh of the radiator and some copper sheet provided the slats and all of a sudden I had managed to put together a half decent looking radiator.
Posted Image

Finally, for today, I have figured out what I think looks like a good combo of paints for the rib tapes. Humbrol 56 on first, mask the tapes and Humbrol 11 top coat. The only problem is the stiff neck from doing the masking!

Now waiting for paint to dry

Exhausts have been built and should look OK. A blanking plate is placed inside the fuselage halves, with a couple of holes drilled to accept two of the exhaust pipes, then they can simply be stuck on at the end.

Getting there slowly.
