Airfix Sea Hurricane IIc

With lots of personal hassles over the past year, it's been difficult to stay focused on anything in particular. Lots of projects have been shelved along the way, so I've been reluctant to start any WIP threads with little expectation of them ever being completed.

This one was down to Modelzone having the Airfix Hurricane IIc on clearance, it was an impulse purchase which I just got on with. As it came together quite quickly, I thought I'd post a few images of where I've got to.

I threw together a quick drawing of a US-built escort carrier deck to make a simple display, the Hurricane is portrayed just catching the arrestor wire, with just one mainwheel touching the deck.

The arrestor hook and wire was made in brass, so there was enough strength to hold it up.

The kit's not one of Airfix's better recent releases, but I'm fairly happy with the way it's turning out. The wings are only dry-fitted at present, I should some flaps made and get the cockpit dressed up a little over the weekend, then close it all up and get some paint on. I intend to show the propellor spinning when it's finished.

Cheers,
Bill.

Not Airfix's finest hour by any means, but I love what you're doing with it. Some of the earlier releases from when Hornby took over are a bit naff in respect of accuracy, but they go together well and they can be a hoot to build.

Nice to see you getting back into the swing of it Bill.

To me, & I'm no expert on Hurricane's or any other aircraft for that matter, it looks a nice little model.
I wouldn't know the nuances between the kits, unless it was blatantly obvious of course. But I think you've done a very nice job
I particularly like the way you have displayed it. It demonstrates exactly what it is; I see a Hurricane & I see it landing on a carrier deck, therefore to a layman like me it must be a Sea Hurricane. Simple & clever  :)

Love the display. So simple and yet so effective. Brilliant!

But a US carrier deck? And really, they were blue? So it is educational too!

cheers

The US navy stained their decks blue by the outbreak of WW2, and this is how US built lend-lease carriers were supplied to the RN. At least some were repainted later in the war, but it all starts to get a bit woolly of what colour was used when.
I intend to do a better print for the base, to make the surface look a bit more worn. At the moment I've reached the limit of my understanding of CorelDraw.....

Cheers,
Bill.

Very effective, Bill. I really like it!
One question, are you going to depict the prop spinning or leave it as is?

The prop will be spinning, stationary just looks wrong,

With a little injection of enthusiasm following SMW, as well as a few necessary materials acquired, I pulled my finger out and got on with this one.
No more construction pictures, but a few of the completed project.

Excuse the dust, I hadn't realised until the pictures were uploaded.

Brilliant, the single wheel landing gives a real sense of action.

Is the kit prop being blown around? Cos if not that's the most realistic prop blur I've ever seen  .

The shape issues are apparent when you are familiar with any subject
But we can only compliment Bill on making a fine model with the kit he has built and the super display

Nice one
Grand job!

Did you have to cut out the flaps?
A rear view would be appreciated please Bill! ;)

I've got a pager motor driving it with a button cell in the base,

I actually cheated with the flaps, deciding to drop them after construction was well under way. They're simple plastic sheet, no detail behind with their wells just painted aluminium and shaded.

I'll try and take some better pictures later,

Cheers,
Bill.

You mean you didn't cut tiny triangles of plasticard and glue them onto the inside of the flap?

I feel cheated now Bill

Thanks for all the nice words. I can pick plenty of holes in the model and I'm sure you all could if you saw it up close and personal.
Overall though, I'm very pleased with the effect. More than that, I'm pleased to have finished at least ONE model during 2013!

Cheers,
Bill.

It's good to see you active again Bill, keep up the good work. I'm sure there's plenty more that we'll be seeing from you in the not too distant future.
