OooH! I have not seen that picture before.

An awesome machine way ahead of it's time. I mean 'Hydraulic slip rings' (to get the fuel to the tip jets), just the very thought makes me blanche - and yet they seemed to work.

I spoke to my grandfather about the Rotodyne (he worked for Fariey briefly in that period) and he said the guys who worked on it said it was a pig to work on. Apparently before every test flight the entire factory was given ear defenders to wear for the duration.

When I first came down South to live and work my boss was (as an enormous amount of people were round here in those days) ex-RAE. He told me that he machined the tip jets, but a bit of trivia was that because of the nature of the beast, they didn't realise just how noisy it was going to be, and the fact they had noise complaints, had to build earth bunkers on Farnborough Airfield to test it behind! :wooo:

I thought the picture was wonderful, with the tip jets producing the effect they did.
There are a few remains of the Rotodyne left at Weston in the Helicopter Museum.
