The Eduard 1/72 MiG-15 has become an instant rarity. 116 have been moulded, but the tooling is now damaged beyond repair. Fortunately Eduard have announced that they will be making another tool and that the Mk II kit will be released in November. That sounds a bit optimistic to me. It will be interesting to watch bidding if any of the 116 get onto ebay - they where sold at Eduard's E-Day show this weekend.

Well...that's a bit crap, how do you bugger up a tooling so quickly? Any idea what the price was going to be for one of these. I know the airfix kit received a shed load of abuse, but if this is going to be neigh on £15 I think I may just pick up the Airfix one and fix the issues that I can.

it's the one thing that really scares me about being a manufacturer of plastic kits- imagine a program goes awol in a three or five axis machine, and the guy minding it happens to be on his loo break or whatever.
Hopefully the spark erosion tools are allcarefully packed away to enable another block of steel to be cut fairly quickly.

If you look on the Eduard Facebook page there are some images of the master tooling that failed.

It's not pretty.

With the process that they use it's possible to get flaws within the metal that causes it to collapse when subjected to heat and pressure. The part of the tooling that caused the problem initially was repaired, but after they began manufacturing it flared up again and the tooling is now FUBAR, which is why they're doing a new one. Hannant's were listing the Dual Combi at about 25.00, so you would expect a single kit to be 12.50.

If you want accurate don't bother with the Airfix MiG, go for the Hobby Boss. The Airfix fuselage is too fat, too long and the wing roots incorrectly positioned. The wing roots are missing their trailing edge fillet, the canopy is poor and the control surfaces are all missing their tabs. The nose gear is an undersized blob. I built mine mostly OOB simply for kicks, but fixed the root fillets, added the tabs and used the nose gear from an Italeri/Dragon MiG, just enough to deceive the casual observer. It was a hoot to build, but it is really a caricature of a MiG-15. I might yet do another, but for accuracy the Hobby Boss would be a better starting point.

Oh right, cheers for the heads up on how the airfix kit really is, I had heard of some of the issues, but not all. Hmmm. Might just have to wait for the Eduard one to be re-released then.

Latest news on the MiG from Eduard:

Quote:

It always seems that when you’re on a run of good luck, at some point you need to get real cautious real soon, because it probably means that fate has a 12-gage aimed right between your eyes. Our cursed MiG-15 kit is turning out to be a serious case in point. Over the past several years, we sputtered through a start to the kit, and never managed to reach anything good. Not much point in dwelling on it, I suppose, suffice to say that we were involved in a product originating with a hand-made master intending to finish it off once and for all using a process that we consider obsolete (but were bound to use) and one that has been replaced for its inconsistent results. This was mostly the result of irritating fit issues caused by shifted molds that would inevitably move out of register to some degree or other. My desire to finally finish this project required the use of the older and obsolete technology, which we’ve mothballed and replaced with good reason, and the recent collapse of the project was a painfully logical result. The responsibility for the failure falls squarely on my shoulders, as does the decision of what to do next. The original concept of digitizing the fuselage and wings, and leaving the rest as is, no longer appeals to me. If we are to go that route, it would make sense to redo the other components as well, especially the air intake, the entire nose, not to mention the exhaust, wheel wells.....when you consider that we already have a Brassin seat and wheel set, the leap is just not that big. So, we are on the road that sees us chucking the old kit altogether, and starting from square one. It should come as no surprise that I have had it up to here with the MiG-15 at this point. So, of course, the promise of the new MiG in November no longer is realistic, and I don’t have the timeline set yet, but now I can promise you a MiG-15 to the standard of our 1/72nd Bf 110.

Well, that just made those 100 odd kits that did get produced about the rarest and most collectable kit on the planet (for an injection molded model)!
