I'm based in Chavsford, sorry Chelmsford. Great Baddow to be precise, which is fortunately just far enough outside of the weekend war zone otherwise known as the town centre so as not to cause us any trouble.peebeep |

I have visited Birch a few times, but always at about 2000'-3000' altitude! If you have a look on Google Maps/Earth you will see that close to the village is a very large triangular field that used to be an airfield with tarmac runways. It was built during WWII, never used very much and reverted back to agricultural use soon after the war ended. A popular spot for instructors to take student pilots to learn how to handle an aeroplane. We often used to visit Clacton when I was a kid. My brother-in-law built a bungalow up by the sea wall at Jaywick, which we would use during the summer hols, happy days! I was reading a piece the other week about how run down Jaywick is these days. In their later years my parents liked to stay at one of the static caravan parks at St Osyth. I always found the Martello towers fascinating when I was young. I was telling my son today about how we would look out for the MV Mi Amigo, easily recognised by the tall transmitter aerial. I used to listen to Radio Caroline, then North Sea International on my little tranny, even during the period when the GPO were jamming them (boo, hiss!) You've made me go all rose tinted speccy, the sun was always shining in those days! peebeep

Butlin's, of course! That used to be down near the airfield IIRC? We were parked in the meadow next to the airfield today and would have walked past where Butlin's used to be on the way to the Prom. As you say, it's all housing, plus a big car park at the end of the Prom. Will have to go and have a look at the Secret Bunker some time. peebeep |

Would be interested to see someone wing walking on the Vulcan! Saw a nice old dear on the tv earlier this year who was disappointed the docs had ordered her to cease wing walking and parachuting because they thought at 85 it was time she stopped such pastimes, bless her. |

I'm planning on doing a tandem skydive to celebrate my sixtieth. Only four years to go! Might see if I can sneak one in before then... ![]() Personally, I don't see why the young 'uns should have all the fun. Wrinkly power rules! peebeep |

Good luck with that Paul and "respeck", even though I'm very firmly in the "Why-jump-out-of-a-perfectly-serviceable-aeroplane? " camp. "I used to listen to Radio Caroline, then North Sea International ..." Happy memories of my youth too, right up to the days when they broadcast in Dutch as Radio Mi Amigo Internationale during the day and Caroline in the evenings. Back on topic, great pics and thanks for posting.

Good for you, Paul! Didn't know you had any aspirations in that direction. My Dad did one of these from 14000ft in Australia last year - aged 78! Got a great bit of video of his face ending up on top of his head on the way down! He said it was about sixty years since he packed his last parachute in the RAF so he thought he'd better get round to using one... Good luck mate, Dean |

It didn't go down very well with Mrs PB when I said it was better than sex. I didn't actually mean that, but if you've done skydiving you know what I mean! peebeep |
