Brit aircraft carriers; seeking reference material

I'm on the scrounge for Brit aircraft carrier reference material, specifically the decks. I'm aiming to design some graphics that could be used for printing and mounting to a suitable base for displaying FAA aircraft. In searching t'internet I found you can get images for WWII and modern US carrier decks, but no British.

This is a not for profit exercise, whilst I would look to retain copyright this would only be to ensure nobody uses any images for their own personal gain, otherwise they will be available for free as and when they get done.

Might be able to get some pics if you are after post war carriers Paul
Will have a chat with my brother. Sadly I don't think I have the Ark Royal photos he sent me backed up
They went to Davy Joneses when the old laptap crashed into Skye. :banghead:

Paul. Have just spoke to an ex FAA friend of mine and he has books on the Aircraft carriers Eagle/Ark Royal post war that he will take pictures and say's that he thinks there are some of the decks.

Funny I traveled fron Gibralter to Malta for a weeks leave on the Ark Royal in the 60s, but of all the Photo's I took there are no pics of the deck :wooo: .

Just to add to that I have found a book from my stock of books, Its the Wonder Book of the Navy.On page 126 there is a good picture of a Sea Hawk landing on HMS Eagle. It shows arrester hooks 12 in number and has dash white lines down the middle.
At the stern the looks to be a white painted letter( C or L it looks like) and to the left is a strait white line running the full length about 2 foot in from the edge..
The dash white lines have yard markings and 400 seems to be the last one.

will try and take a picture, not sure if I am breaking any copyrights. :wooo:

A former crew member of Ark Royal told me that the tie-downs were like ring doughnuts, which laid over a central circular plinth, and stood proud of the surface. He said, that, apart from tripping over the damn things, if you hit one, while playing deck hockey, the vibrations ran right up your arms to the top of your head.

Paul. On a little research I think the decks were a tan colour for British Aircraft carriers in the early days.

Mind you HMS- Eagle shows what could be black deck but dark grey me thinks.

There is a good U Tube vidieo on HMS Victorious in the 1950s on the Ship model forum in Aircraft carriers, this shows the deck in a Greeny/tan colour.

Ok had a word with one that knows and the 4th Ark Royal had grey and in some places greeny shade but mostly grey on the deck surfaces.

The tan colour was used on earlier types and no Tarmac was used on any carrier of British make.

Somewhere I have a note of the colours used on RN Carrier decks - surprisingly, Extra Dark Sea Grey makes an appearance, and there was a green on non-flying areas on some.

Difficult one this! Wish I could help but alas I hold very few useful refs, the photos in my books just dont cut it. Whilst building the 3 Arks in 1/700 (yes I know its old hat) I just couldn't satisfy myself with what reference material I found and the one thing that eluded me was flight deck colours etc, but in the end thought sod it, colour varies so much depending upon light anyway.
Have wanted to do what you're talkin bout Peebeep, for some time, but scaling the amount of Ark IV deck I want in 1/72 is about 9 - 12ft if I remember right.
Did think about a board on top of the train layout, but I know I would then want some superstructure too..........where does it end ?
Would like to show some Ark pics if anyone is interested, but not sure how to anyway!

I'm thinking in terms of a small portion of deck for posing a 1/72 or 1/48 model. Say, an A4 format base for a 1/72 model and A3 for 1/48. I can't think that anybody would want larger formats, but up to AO would be possible! I want just enough features and coloured deck markings to make it look interesting. I've received some good references for modern carriers, but WWII or earlier is thin on the ground. I might make a start on something this weekend.

Sounds very much like something I've seen on e-Bay,
A seller known as ipms01 is offering a printed card one (looks like Ark IV) with a Buccaneer posed, comes in 1/72 (320x450mm) & 1/48 (450x640mm), might be worth a look but if you are like me you would prefer to turn out your own.

Have just had a look at some pictures in the HMS Victorious Anatomy of the Ship book
There are not many deck photos of the wartime configuration.
From what I can make out, deck markings are more restrained than post war/jet era carrier decks.

There appears to be a line of "hyphens" down the centre of the flight deck from an aerial photo dated c1941
What is noticeable are the plate expansion joints and tie downs.
Not very exciting but there is weathering so the deck has tonal variations.

There is a well known photo of 825 squadron Swordfish parked on the stern that may be worth looking for.

I found a graphic for my Buccaneer base that was supposed to be a British carrier deck. I've just had a look and it was from the aviation workshop.

Link to deck graphic

Looks a bit like the Ark Royal of 'Sailor' fame?

Link to Ark Royal Pic

But probably not HMS Eagle...

Link to Eagle overhead shot

and not the later Ark.

Later Ark

Cheers,
Nick
