Hi all, I started on my next creation a couple of weeks ago, but due to the usual cycle of working away from home for long periods, I haven't had much chance to work on it or report on it. Last year, at MK if I remember rightly, I picked up this from a trader: ![]() I've been wanting to do another aircraft from my Dad's old squadron, 501, and this was the ideal opportunity. Hopefully I'm going to finish it as EJ600, coded SD-F which crashed in October 1944 killing Sqn Ldr Joe Berry, 501's CO. The kit was already the Profipack, containing the resin cockpit and PE parts: ![]() But I also found the Alley Cat rear fuselage correction set in the box, with a Squadron vacform canopy - I bought a set of resin exhausts, and I'll be using these: ![]() The resin cockpit parts looked nicely detailed, and after adding some very fiddly PE parts, the cockpit looked like this: ![]() A coat of primer, airbrushed interior green, detail painting, drybrushing, a coat of Klear, a dark wash and a matt coat later, the cockpit looked like this: ![]() Loads of detail on the resin bits: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Put all the bits together and you get this: ![]() And when you put all this in the fuselage, you can see this: ![]() Arrrghhh! Why do we do this to ourselves? Then, while I was fettling the fuselage halves, my scalpel slipped: ![]() Looks like I'll have to use the rear fuselage correction set after all: ![]() This is only test fitted - filling and sanding will soon be manifest... I then did some work on the exhaust areas. The resin exhausts are meant to be fitted in from the inside, but that would leave a nightmare masking task when painting the camouflage around them, so I decided to first shorted the aperture to fit the slightly smaller resin exhausts, then stick some plastic card inside to give a backing to glue them to after painting: ![]() ![]() Exhausts had to be narrowed and shallowed on their mounting block to enable them to fit in from the outside: ![]() That's about all for the moment folks, more as it happens. Cool ![]() Have a couple that have been waiting attention. One has the MDC MkII conversion. Not sure I will bother with the fuselage correction Airfix for a nice new tool accurate Tiffie and Tempest in 1/72 and 1/48Well a girl can dream can't she? |

Too late, now, for which I apologise, but the Tempest didn't have a Sutton harness; it had a "Q" harness (don't know the full designation,) which resembles a parachute type with a quick-release box. You're quite right to use the AlleyCat conversion; as moulded, the rudder can't operate, since it's clamped by the tail light extensions. When you get to them, wheel wells were in cockpit green. Thanks for the comments so far chaps, and thanks for the info on the harness Edgar - I just used the one in the kit! However, as I've pointed out, you really can't see much in the cockpit, and probably even less with the canopy on, so I'm not too worried about it... Working away from home a lot lately, so don't know when I'll post another update - keep watching anyway... Cheers, Dean |

Ironically, the one thing that put me off buying the Eduard Tempest was the panel lines - too fine! I like something that I can cover in Halfords and smooth down with Scotchbrite. |

Blimey, doesn't time fly? I've been away a lot again, and haven't done much to the Tempest, but I thought I'd show the couple of improvements I have made: First, the landing lights under the wing were moulded solid. I drilled them out to the same diameter as one of my miniature punches, added a disc of plastic inside as a reflector and used a beading tool to add a 'bulb'. The plan is to add a punched circle of foil to make it reflective, and then add a clear cover from a punched disc of acetate - all after painting, to make life easier: ![]() I've also assembled the prop, and painted and weathered the spinner: ![]() It's very light weathering, as this aircraft was only four months old when it was shot down, and it WAS the CO's plane, after all. I've also yet to add the weathering and wear on the prop blades themselves. I added a bit of pipework to the wheel bays and painted and weathered them, ditto the insides of the bay doors: ![]() I've managed to find a bit of time today to fill and sand the fuselage joint with the resin replacement, as it's being a devil to disguise. I think it's about there now, so I might do a bit of rescribing later, and then maybe fit the wings. Onwards and upwards, Dean |

I've managed to get the wings on at last, which meant thinning them to match the aerofoil section on the fuselage fillet, and thinning down the overly thick trailing edges. and then I found the fit of the upper wing halves at the root was awful. I think the resin cockpit had caused the fuselage sides to bulge out, which meant the wing mating points had to be carefully trimmed to fit the fillet. It took me about fifteen minutes either side, but the gaps were so tight in the end that I don't think any filler will be needed here:![]() ![]() So here is how it stands at the moment: ![]() I might get the tailplanes on tonight, I might not, but whatever happens that'll be it for another week. Back again this weekend, and I finally got the stabilisers on. The gaps were seen to with a mixture of superglue and talc, which I've got mixed feelings about, and then a coat of primer was added. I went over the panel lines with the scriber as they're very shallow and probably won't hold a wash after several coats of paint, and the result was this:![]() ![]() I'm not too unhappy with it, but there are a couple of bare spots where I've spotted some imperfection that needed rubbing down. I then turned my attention to the wingtip lights, as these are moulded solid on the kit. Can't have that! I started by cutting out the notch where the lights were orignally moulded in: ![]() Then I got a piece of scrap clear sprue, cut it roughly to shape, drilled a hole in it to represent the bulb, filled it with paint, and superglued it to the recess. After flooding the gaps with superglue, carving, cutting and sanding to the right size and shape, I spent a while polishing it with my finest sanding sponge to get it back to clear: ![]() ![]() I was pretty pleased with the result, as it looks like a clear cover over a coloured bulb, as per the original. It was half an hour's work just for that one light, but i think it was worth the effort. Then I realised what I'd done... Oh well, time for a break, I think. Onwards and upwards, Dean |
