Great rant! I do have a thing about Hasegawa, I mean flogging a couple of donkey's year old kits in the same box, calling it a combo or whatever and pricing it eye wateringly astronomical, it's just not....er....sorry. peebeep |

Can't argue with a thing you've said there. I actually don't like mail order, but that's just me. I paid the full retail for the new Airfix Swordfish at my LHS and am very happy, could I have saved a couple of quid, probably. As you've said it's all about choices. The thing that gets me, is a few disgruntled modellers on a forum seem to believe they have some sort of sway over these manufacturers, time for them to wakeup I think and either stump up the cash, or keep quiet. richc |

I can understand people commenting on price, but as Drewe days its a difference between want, need and personal choice. Me personally I'm dumbstruck at how much Italeri's prices have shot up over the last few years, from being the bargain manufacturer from whom I would regularly snap up every new release, to one I rarely bother. But hey, that's my choice, I have no god-given right to have access to their products, my human rights are not being violated because I think their Hurricane is overpriced. Such is life, I'll make the decision (and my thoughts known to the Italeri reps at Telford) and move on. Frankly, so long as the entry level stuff remains affordable, this hobby is in rude health. |

You said pretty much what I was thinking when I read those posts. People are never happier than when they've something to complain about, Cheers, Bill. |

I totally agree with your rant, it makes good sense. Although some kits are out of my price range, there are always plenty of kits that are. You can't build them all, so why worry about the pricey stuff? Also, the economic realities of the hobby have changed significantly since the high watermark of the 70's (I was there!), so I expect any new tool, decent quality kit to cost a lot. I suppose I'm only really surprised when they don't. |

As one of those that commented on the sudden hike in UK Hasegawa prices (when a Hase 1/72 Beaufighter overnight became more expensive than a Tamiya 1/48 Beaufighter) I must confess that when I was in Australia at the back end of last year, I noticed that Hasegawa prices there had risen by as much (if not more) than those in the UK. RoG and to some extent Airfix (to their credit) do seem to be bucking the trend somewhat, and I don't really see a problem with £55 for a 1/48 Merlin, as it's a lot of plastic for your money! How popular a subject it will be remains to be seen (personally I think it's a bit niche and it will be the Lynx's that Airfix will shift by the boatload). As to the broader question of modellers finding something to complain about on the Internet - a couple of things: Firstly, some people will always find something to complain about - fact. Secondly, due to the nature of the beast (internet forums) people instinctively follow a thread, reading each post in turn, to see how the discussion progresses in a logical manner. Unfortunately, this gives the 'complainer' a captive audience for their latest pet hate. Sure, you can just avoid the obviously trolling threads themselves (provided they are clearly titled) but often it's an innocuous looking thread about a new kit that just degenerates into a stream of 'I hate (insert manufacturer here)' or 'why don't (insert manufacturer here) ever listen to us net experten'? I'd love some IT nerd to develop a filter that removes the banale, vitriolic twaddle espoused as fact by some of these individuals. Cheers, Rob |

Spot on couldn't agree more. If you can't afford it and you really want it you have many options. 1/ Save the money for it. 2/ Sell stuff from the stash. 3/ Get a better job, minimum wage desn't stretch to luxuries. Or, for some folk, just the hell get a job! 4/ Get out the hobby! I want a Ferrari, but I can't afford it. Don't see me ranting on Ferrari forums about the price of them, blah blah blah. Anybody got a Tamiya 1/32 Spit Mk XVI going cheap? have you seen the price, it's outrageous. The importers should be publically flogged and as for the shopkeepers who put their mark up on top to make a living! Hanging is to good for em! |
