Another update. Here's the engine built up and ready to mate with the gearbox and fit to the chassis, which hopefully will be done this coming weekend. As usual, this is turning out to be a longer build than anticipated, but I have tried to add as much realistic detail to this build as possible, without it turning into a 'superdetailing' project, which in 1/20 scale would drive me up the wall! As mentioned before, I purchased a set of white metal cam covers which came with plug lead (too thin though, so I used 0.4mm wire instead, which looks more 'in scale'), two types of rubber plug boots and three types of photo etched engine-to-chassis mounts, and along with the air trumpet intake set, has given the engine a great deal of realism I think, although not easy to put together. Some pics. Hi again, Engine and gearbox joined together and installed in the car, along with the roll hoop, main cowling and front wing. The roll hoop has been modified with an extra piece on top of the main part, as this is how it appeared at the 1979 Dutch Grand Prix (don't know why). I did this by using one of the ends of a fairly large paper clip which I cut off, glued in place and painted Humbrol metalcote matt aluminium, along with the rest of the roll hoop. The kit part came chromed, but this is incorrect consistent with the real car. Fitting the engine/gearbox to the chassis was a huge problem; the metal cam covers are bigger than the kit parts and therefore this prevented proper alignment where the cam covers butt up next to the side wall of the bulk head. I had to file down the side walls and re-paint, but most of this is hidden under the main cowling. The exhausts are not a great fit, and I wish I had tried to clean up the joins where each of the four pipes reduce down to one, before glueing them to the engine, but to the naked eye it doesn't look too noticeable. They are painted matt black, but I also added a bit of weathering in the form of oil stain, burnt blue and burnt red (Tamiya weathering set D) and this has given them a bit of a realistic metallic sheen. At least it is all starting to come together and look like a racing car instead a collection of sub assemblies. The first pics. are of the engine and gearbox together. ![]() ![]() The car taking shape. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Back again. Not a great deal to show for the last few weeks, but what I have been doing has taken some time. Mainly, adding the rear portions of the exhausts, hoses and micromesh polishing and decalling the side panels. I had added the hoses by using braided hose by Tuner Model Manufactory, which are very good quality. The problem was, they were out of scale as I had bought them to detail up my next 1/12 build, and also they are very stiff and make forming them around curves very difficult. I was not happy with them and decided to replace them with rubber tubing painted aluminium, with a much better result. I have sanded and polished the sides as I was not happy with the paint finish. Decals have been added and also I have picked out the positions of the panel screws and panel lines. The panel lines are a bit too thick, but Tamiya moulded them this way and they look passable, although I would prefer them thinner. I used thinned down matt black with a very narrow brush, which still resulted in some overspill, but this polished out with wax polish. On to some pics, first the hoses and exhaust. I managed to get a better finish on the exhausts by adding seam welds, but the rear portions were a difficult fit and are a touch too 'far apart' where they sit just in front of the rear wing upright. I am not sure they will fit through the opening in the engine cover, but as the model will be displayed with it off, I am not too concerned. ![]() ![]() The side panels. I have discovered that the blue stripes are too dark compared with the real car, but nothing I can do about this. Not far off finishing now; hopefully in the next couple of weeks. |

That engine looks totally real, a great job on it, as the rest of the car, the extra bits for the engine are well worth it, really brings it to life. great finish on the bodywork aswell, will look amazing when its all together. |

Thanks Duncan & Nick, I have enjoyed this build, not done very quickly as is my usual scenario. Wheels and tyres. Most of the races during 1979, this car ran with black front wheels and aluminium rear wheels. The kit parts went with this, with the rear ones on the chrome sprue, which was actually very well done with what looked like an aluminium finish rather than chrome. The 1979 Dutch Grand Prix had black rear wheels, however, so I had to spray them semi gloss black which was a real shame to cover up the original finish. Unlike most other Tamiya kits, the Goodyear logos were not included as a separate set of decals; the wording is moulded onto the tyres in outline, and you have to paint them matt white. This was probably one of the hardest and nervewracking things I have ever done, as the logos are extremely small, especially on the fronts. I bought a 10/0 brush, the smallest I have ever seen, but my first two attempts with the fronts were not good and I had to clean the paint off. So, I hit on the obvious idea of thinning the paint down and dabbing very small amounts into each logo, and with care this worked as capilliary action flowed the paint around each letter and this stayed within the recess of each letter. I am very happy with the results and thought about matt varnishing the sidewalls to get rid of the shine, but have decided to leave well alone. I sanded the treads before painting to give the tyres a slightly used look and get rid of the centre mould line. Pictures. ![]()

Thanks Jelly & Les, Well, it's been finished a couple of weeks but have only just had the time to do a few photos; will be appearing in Ready For Inspection in a few days time. The first picture is of the completed engine cowl. Not a great finish on the paint but not too bad. The funnel mesh is a second set I had to buy after messing up the first lot, which had to be trimmed to size and I made a hash of it. This second set had a brass finish so I had to paint them. They are a bit too big and would not fit into the recesses on the kit part; they are fixed with a few strategic spots of Micro Kristal Klear. ![]() ![]() ![]()
